Abstract

Methods and apparatuses to activate, modify, and sanitize the surfaces of granular, powdered, or seed material placed in a continuous flow of a low-temperature, reduced-pressure gas plasma. Said plasma may be created with radio-frequency power, using capacitive-inductive, or a combination of both types of discharge. The plasma is generated at pressures in the 0.01 to 10 Torr range. RF frequency ranges from 0.2 to 220 MHz, and correspond to a plasma density between about n e ×10 8 -n e ×10 12 or 0.001 to 0.4 W/cm 3 . Inserts and electrodes may be temperature controlled to control process conditions. RF discharge may be pulsed or modulated by different frequency in order to stimulate energy exchange between gas plasma and process material. The apparatuses may be grounded, biased and mechanically activated (e.g., vibration, rotation, etc.).

Claims (16)

1. A plasma treatment module comprising:

a hopper, for holding seeds for treatment;

a chamber, the chamber being plasma tolerant;

a first load lock seal, partitioning the hopper from an interior of the chamber;

a feeder, for dispensing seeds from the hopper at a predetermined rate;

a first tray, disposed within the chamber, that receives seeds from the feeder;

a second tray, disposed within the chamber, that receives seeds from the first tray;

at least one linear actuator that moves at least one of the trays;

at least one pair of electrodes, disposed about the chamber and extending perpendicular to a top surface of the first tray and a top surface of the second tray, the at least one pair of electrodes being capable of ionizing a gas to create a plasma environment;

a temperature regulator comprising a temperature sensor, a temperature control unit, and a temperature control element; and

a second load lock seal, partitioning the interior of the chamber from an exterior of the chamber.

2. The module of claim 1 , wherein the first tray further comprises inclined ridges.

3. The module of claim 1 , wherein the at least one linear actuator is connected to the first tray and a second linear actuator is connected to the second tray.

4. The module of claim 1 , further comprising a third tray, disposed within the vacuum chamber, that receives seeds from the second tray.

5. The module of claim 1 , further comprising a power density controller that maintains electron density in the chamber between n e ×10 8 and n e ×10 12 .

6. The module of claim 1 , further comprising a power density controller that maintains power density in the chamber between 0.001 and 0.4 W/cm 3 .
