Abstract

The invention disclosed herein relates to a video game system comprising a video game console and an object or toy used in connection with the video game console, wherein the object or toy has a rewritable data storage device, and wherein the video game console stores information in the rewritable data storage device in response to game play events occurring in a first gaming session. The stored information is subsequently retrieved by the video game console in a second gaming session, and the retrieved information is used to conduct the game play of the second gaming session.

Claims (12)

1. A video game system comprising:

a physical object having rewritable data storage, the physical object comprising a toy representative of a first virtual game character;

a peripheral for detecting the presence of the physical object;

a video game console having a processor for executing instructions to:

retrieve information of the first virtual game character from the rewritable data storage of the physical object during a first gaming session,

detect a game play event in the first gaming session in which a first user controls the first virtual game character and a second user controls a second virtual character;

write information of the second virtual game character to the rewritable data storage of the physical object in connection with the detection of the game play event during the first gaming session;

retrieve said information of the second virtual game character from the rewritable data storage of the physical object during a second gaming session; and

conduct a game play sequence in the second gaming session, wherein the game play sequence includes user control of the second virtual game character, the second virtual game character based at least in part on the retrieved information.

2. The video game system of claim 1 , wherein the physical object includes a display, and the information of the second game character includes image information of the second game character.

3. The video game system of claim 1 , wherein the physical object includes an audio output, and the information of the second game character includes audio information of the second game character.

4. The video game system of claim 1 , wherein the information of the second game character is an identification of the second game character.
