Abstract

An acoustic module, such as a microphone or speaker module, includes an acoustic membrane that vibrates to produce acoustic waves and an acoustic cavity through which acoustic waves produced by the membrane travel. A liquid removal mechanism removes liquid from the acoustic cavity. Such a liquid removal mechanism may include the acoustic membrane, heating elements, hydrophobic and/or hydrophilic surfaces, and so on. In some cases, the liquid removal mechanism may remove liquid from the acoustic cavity upon connection of the acoustic module and/or an associated electronic device to an external power source.

Claims (31)

1 - 20 . (canceled)

21 . An electronic device, comprising:

a housing defining an acoustic port; and

an acoustic device, coupled to the acoustic port, operable to produce a first frequency followed by a second frequency to force liquid out of the acoustic port.

22 . The electronic device of claim 21 , wherein the first frequency is inaudible to humans.

23 . The electronic device of claim 21 , wherein the second frequency is inaudible to humans.

24 . The electronic device of claim 21 , wherein the acoustic device produces the first and second frequencies when the electronic device is connected to an external power source.

25 . The electronic device of claim 21 , wherein the liquid is forced from the aperture in a same direction as human audible sound produced by the acoustic device.

26 . The electronic device of claim 21 , wherein the housing is an external housing of the electronic device.

27 . The electronic device of claim 21 , wherein the acoustic device produces a human audible frequency after the second frequency.

28 . An acoustic assembly, comprising:

an enclosure defining an acoustic cavity; and

an acoustic module coupled to the acoustic cavity; wherein:

the acoustic module is operable to produce a sequence of frequencies to force liquid from the acoustic cavity; and

the sequence of frequencies includes two different frequencies that are outside a range of human hearing and are produced sequentially.

29 . The acoustic assembly of claim 28 , wherein the acoustic module produces the sequence of frequencies before producing sound that is audible to humans.

30 . The acoustic assembly of claim 28 , wherein the two different frequencies are above approximately 20,000 Hz.

31 . The acoustic assembly of claim 28 , wherein the two different frequencies are below approximately 20 Hz.

32 . The acoustic assembly of claim 28 , wherein the acoustic module produces the sequence of frequencies in a different mode than a mode in which the acoustic module produces human audible sound.

33 . The acoustic assembly of claim 28 , wherein the acoustic module produces the sequence of frequencies after the acoustic assembly detects the liquid in the acoustic cavity.

34 . The acoustic assembly of claim 28 , wherein the acoustic module produces at least one of the two different frequencies after the acoustic assembly detects the liquid in the acoustic cavity.

35 . An acoustic device, comprising:

a speaker; and

a body that defines an aperture through which the speaker is operable to transmit sound waves; wherein the speaker is operable in:

a first mode where the speaker transmits sound waves within a range of human hearing; and

a second mode where the speaker transmits a first frequency and then a second frequency to force liquid out of the aperture, the first and second frequencies being outside the range of human hearing.

36 . The acoustic device of claim 35 , wherein the sound waves within the range of human hearing are between approximately 20 Hz and 20,000 Hz.

37 . The acoustic device of claim 35 , wherein the first and second frequencies have different acoustic characteristics.

38 . The acoustic device of claim 35 , where wherein the first and second frequencies have different amplitudes.

39 . The acoustic device of claim 35 , wherein the body comprises a housing of a wearable device.

40 . The acoustic device of claim 35 , wherein the first and second frequencies were previously used to successfully clear the aperture.
