Abstract

An electromagnetic (EM) receiver system for measuring EM signals. The EM receiver system includes a platform; a coil for measuring EM signals; and first to third suspension mechanisms located between the platform and the coil so that the coil oscillates relative to the platform, and the first to third suspension mechanisms attenuate motion induced noise introduced by towing the receiver system above ground.

Claims (47)

1. An electromagnetic (EM) receiver system for measuring EM signals, the EM receiver system comprising:

a coil assembly;

a receiver coil fixedly attached to the coil assembly and configured to measure an EM signal;

a spindle located within the coil assembly;

a first elastic member connecting the spindle to the coil assembly, the first elastic member allowing the coil assembly to oscillate relative to the spindle;

an inner cage configured to house the coil assembly, the spindle being linked to the inner cage through a second elastic member; and

an outer cage configured to house the inner cage, the inner cage being linked to the outer cage through a third elastic member,

wherein each of the first to third elastic members is configured to allow the coil assembly to oscillate relative to the outer cage and each elastic member damps a motion of the receiver system when towed during an EM survey.

2. The receiver system of claim 1 , wherein the first, second and third elastic members include plural elastic elements.

3. The receiver system of claim 2 , wherein an elastic element is configured to increase its length when a tension is applied along its length.

4. The receiver system of claim 1 , wherein at least one of the first, second and third elastic members are adjustable so that a damping frequency changes.

5. The receiver system of claim 1 , wherein each of the first, second and third elastic member are adjustable so that a damping frequency changes.

6. The receiver system of claim 1 , wherein the first, second and third elastic members damp motion induced noise so that the coil records a signal that is above an electronic noise floor for frequencies larger than 3 Hz.

7. The receiver system of claim 1 , wherein the first, second and third elastic members damp motion induced noise so that the coil records a signal that is above an electronic noise floor for frequencies larger than 5 Hz.

8. The receiver system of claim 1 , wherein the coil assembly comprises:

a coil support that supports the coil.

9. The receiver system of claim 8 , further comprising:

an outer ring fixedly connected to the spindle,

wherein the second elastic member directly connects to the outer ring and a top ring of the inner cage.

10. The receiver system of claim 8 , wherein the outer cage is made of two parts identical to the spindle.

11. An electromagnetic (EM) receiver system for measuring EM signals, the EM receiver system comprising:

a platform;

a coil for measuring EM signals;

a coil support to which the coil is fixedly attached; and

first to third suspension mechanisms located between the platform and the coil so that the coil oscillates relative to the platform, and the first to third suspension mechanisms attenuate motion induced noise introduced by towing the receiver system above ground,

wherein the first suspension mechanism is located within the coil support and the second and third mechanisms are located outside the coil support.

12. The receiver system of claim 11 , wherein the first to third suspension mechanisms include corresponding first to third elastic members that are configured to deform when subject to tension.

13. The receiver system of claim 12 , wherein each of the first to third elastic members includes ropes or bungees.

14. The receiver system of claim 11 , further comprising:

an outer cage rigidly fixed to the platform;

an inner cage movably attached to the outer cage with the third elastic member;

the coil support movably attached to the inner cage with the second elastic member; and

a spindle movably attached to an inside of the coil support with the first elastic member.

15. The receiver system of claim 14 , wherein the inner cage is a ring and the outer cage is made of two separate pieces.

16. The receiver system of claim 15 , wherein the two separated pieces are positioned above and below the ring.

17. A method for attenuating motion induced noise in an electromagnetic (EM) receiver system for measuring EM signals, the method comprising:

providing a platform; and

fixedly attaching a coil for measuring EM signals to a coil support and attaching the coil support to the platform with first to third suspension mechanisms,

wherein the coil oscillates relative to the platform and the first to third suspension mechanisms attenuate the motion induced noise introduced by towing the receiver system above ground,

wherein the first suspension mechanism is located within the coil support and the second and third mechanisms are located outside the coil support.

18. The method of claim 17 , wherein the first to third suspension mechanisms include corresponding first to third elastic members that are configured to deform when subject to tension.

19. The method of claim 18 , further comprising:

rigidly fixing an outer cage to the platform;

movingly attaching an inner cage to the outer cage with the third elastic member;

movingly attaching the coil support to the inner cage with the second elastic member; and

movingly attaching a spindle to an inside of the coil support with the first elastic member.

20. The method of claim 17 , wherein the three suspension mechanisms are adjustable so that a power spectrum of the recorded signals is adjustable.
