Abstract

Ink compositions comprising a carrier and an inorganic particulate additive are described. The ink composition comprises a liquid carrier and an inorganic particulate additive, wherein bleeding of the additive into a fount solution in offset printing is reduced. The inorganic particulate additive has a washout factor, representing the extent of bleeding in offset printing use, of less than about 0.70.

Claims (15)

. An ink composition comprising a liquid carrier and an inorganic particulate additive, wherein the inorganic particulate additive has a washout factor of less than about 0.70.

. The ink composition according to claim 1 , wherein the ink composition further comprises a flocculant.

. An ink composition comprising a liquid carrier, an inorganic particulate additive, and a flocculant, wherein the inorganic particulate additive and flocculant are a flocculated inorganic particulate additive.

. The ink composition according to claim 2 , wherein the flocculant is present in the ink composition in an amount of at least about 0.05% by weight of the inorganic particulate additive.

. The ink composition according to claim 2 , wherein the flocculant comprises a multivalent cation.

. The ink composition according to claim 2 , wherein the flocculent comprises an ionene polymer.

. The ink composition according to claim 2 , wherein the flocculent is selected from aluminium sulphate and 1,2-ethanediamine polymer with (chloromethyl)oxirane and N-methylmethanamine.

. The ink composition according to claim 1 , wherein the inorganic particulate additive is provided with a hydrophobic coating.

. An ink composition comprising a liquid carrier and an inorganic particulate additive, wherein particles of the inorganic particulate additive are provided with a hydrophobic coating.

. The ink composition according to claim 9 , wherein the hydrophobic coating is covalently bonded to the inorganic particulate additive.

. The ink composition according to claim 10 , wherein the hydrophobic coating comprises a silane, for example octyl silane or vinyl silane, or an amine, for example octadecylamine.

. A method of manufacturing an ink composition according to claim 1 , comprising combining the liquid carrier, the inorganic particulate additive, and optionally the flocculant.

. A method of reducing bleeding of an inorganic particulate additive from an ink composition, comprising using a fount solution during offset printing, wherein the fount solution comprises the ink composition of claim 2 .

. An ink composition according to claim 1 , wherein the inorganic particulate additive is a clay, for example kaolin,

. A method of using an ink composition, comprising providing an ink composition according to claim 1 and using the ink composition in offset printing.
