Abstract

Many hand-held diagnostics are limited in their functionality due to the challenging physics associated with small dimensional systems. An example of this is capillary forces in hydrophilic systems, such as the tight retention of liquid passing through a small pore filtration membrane, or capillary force driven microfluidics where, to keep liquid flowing the dimensions of the system become so small that the flow rates are too low to be useful, or the manufacturing of such devices becomes uneconomical. This disclosure details methods to ‘reset’ the capillary force condition to avoid the requirement of transient pressure spikes associated with the breakthrough pressure of small pore membranes, and avoid the necessity of extremely small microfluidic channels, which can be useful in applications such as filtration of whole blood to plasma using only suction pressure or passive capillary pressure.

Claims (13)

1. A method of drawing liquid past a capillary barrier by placing a soluble matrix in physical contact with an exterior surface of said capillary barrier; wherein said soluble matrix, by capillary force, draws liquid past said capillary barrier and into itself, after which a portion of said soluble matrix dissolves in said liquid; wherein said dissolution releases said liquid from said soluble matrix.

2. The method of claim 1 whereas said capillary barrier is a component of a membrane's or filter's breakthrough pressure.

3. The method of claim 1 , whereas said capillary barrier is present at the junction of two or more microfluidic channels.

4. The method of claim 1 , whereas said soluble matrix is comprised at least in part of a micro or nano-particulate or fibrous material of simple or complex salts, sugars, proteins, carbohydrates, acids or bases.

5. The method of claim 1 , whereas said method is used to eliminate the breakthrough pressure of membranes or filters.

6. The method of claim 5 , whereas said membrane or filter is used for separating a liquid into sub-components of said liquid.

7. The method of claim 6 , whereas said liquid is blood and said sub-components are serum or plasma.

8. The method of claim 1 , whereas said liquid, once released from said soluble matrix, continues to flow downstream of said capillary barrier.

9. The method of claim 8 , whereas said continued flow eliminates additional capillary barriers that may be present in the system by wetting through the opposite side of said additional capillary barriers.

10. The method of claim 8 , whereas said continued flow delivers a metered volume of liquid to a point downstream of said capillary barrier, said metered volume being defined by the geometry of the flow system upstream of said capillary barrier.

11. The method of claim 8 , whereas said continued flow includes flow into a membrane-based flow system.

12. The method of claim 8 , whereas said continuation of flow downstream of said capillary barrier is driven by capillary forces present in the flow system downstream of said capillary barrier.

13. The method of claim 8 , whereas said continuation of flow downstream of said capillary barrier is driven by pressure gradients applied at a point upstream or downstream of said capillary barrier.
