Abstract

Devices, methods and kits are described for reducing intraocular pressure. The devices include a support that is implantable within Schlemm's canal and maintains the patency of the canal without substantially interfering with transmural fluid flow across the canal. The devices utilize the natural drainage process of the eye and can be implanted with minimal trauma to the eye. Kits include a support and an introducer for implanting the support within Schlemm's canal. Methods include implanting a support within Schlemm's canal, wherein the support is capable of maintaining the patency of the canal without substantial interference with transmural fluid flow across the canal.

Claims (19)

1. A method for reducing intraocular pressure, comprising:

delivering a high viscosity fluid into Schlemm's canal;

inserting a distal end of an introducer into Schlemm's canal; and

introducing a support circumferentially into Schlemm's canal using the introducer, wherein the support comprises a central bore and is slidably positioned along a guide element during introduction.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising extending the guide element circumferentially along Schlemm's canal.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising pushing the support along the guide element.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the support has at least one fenestration.

5. The method of claim 1 , wherein the support extends about a quarter or less than a quarter of the circumference of Schlemm's canal.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the support is made from a shape memory material.

7. The method of claim 6 , wherein the shape memory material comprises a shape memory alloy.

8. The method of claim 7 , wherein the shape memory alloy comprises a nickel titanium alloy.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the support is flexible.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein at least a portion of the support extends out of Schlemm's canal.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the support does not substantially interfere with longitudinal flow along the canal.

12. The method of claim 1 , wherein the support does not substantially interfere with transmural flow across the inner wall of the canal.

13. The method of claim 1 , wherein the support does not substantially interfere with transmural flow across the outer wall of the canal.

14. The method of claim 1 , wherein when the support is disposed within a cylindrical section of the lumen of Schlemm's canal having an internal wall surface area C, the support contacts less than 30% of C.

15. The method of claim 1 , wherein when the support is disposed within a cylindrical section of the lumen of Schlemm's canal having an internal wall surface area C, the support contacts less than 10% of C.

16. The method of claim 1 , wherein the high viscosity fluid is sodium hyaluronate.
