Abstract

This invention generally relates to a medical device assembly for facilitating a sealed working channel into a pressurized body cavity, and methods of use thereof, In certain embodiments, devices of the invention include a hollow body that is splittable along its length and being configured to move between an open configuration for operably coupling with a surgical instrument and a closed configuration, in which in the closed configuration, the device provides a seal that prevents gas leakage from an incision site of a body cavity while the instrument is in the body cavity.

Claims (26)

1. A device for facilitating creation of a sealed channel into a body cavity, the device comprising:

a hollow body having first and second portions hingedly connected to each other, the hollow body splittable along its length and configured to move between an open configuration and a closed configuration, the hollow body defining a lumen extending between open proximal and distal ends in the closed configuration;

a radial gasket disposed within the hollow body configured to seal the lumen of the hollow body to prevent gas leakage from a pressurized body cavity through the hollow body in the closed configuration; and

a locking mechanism configured to maintain the hollow body in the closed configuration, the locking mechanism including a biasing element to bias the hollow body toward the closed configuration.

2. The device according to claim 1 , wherein the radial gasket is configured to sealingly engage a surgical instrument extending through the lumen of the hollow body to prevent gas leakage from the pressurized body cavity through the hollow body in the closed configuration.

3. The device according to claim 2 , wherein the radial gasket is configured to permit reciprocal linear motion of a surgical instrument through the lumen of the hollow body.

4. The device according to claim 1 , wherein the radial gasket is disposed along an inner surface of the hollow body at a proximal portion thereof.

5. The device according to claim 1 , wherein the radial gasket defines a generally C-shape.

6. The device according to claim 1 , wherein the radial gasket is a soft flexible material chosen from the group consisting of foams and rubbers.

7. The device according to claim 1 , wherein the radial gasket includes a plurality of flexible leafs arranged radially about the lumen of the hollow body, the plurality of flexible leafs assuming a closed cone shape in the absence of a surgical instrument with the hollow body in the closed configuration.

8. The device according to claim 1 , further comprising a linear gasket disposed along at least one of the first or second portions of the hollow body, the linear gasket configured to seal the first and second portions of the hollow body to inhibit gas leakage from the pressurized body cavity therethrough.

9. The device according to claim 1 , further having a slide prevention mechanism configured to prevent movement of the hollow body relative to a body wall during a surgical procedure.

10. The device according to claim 1 , further having a stopping mechanism configured to prevent insertion of a proximal portion of the hollow body into an incision site of a body cavity, the stopping mechanism disposed at the proximal portion of the hollow body and defining a diameter greater than a diameter of the hollow body in the closed configuration.

11. The device according to claim 10 , wherein the stopping mechanism includes a first portion disposed on an outer surface of the first portion of the hollow body, and a second portion disposed on an outer surface of the second portion of the hollow body.

12. A device for facilitating creation of a sealed channel into a body cavity, the device comprising:

a hollow body having first and second portions hingedly connected to each other, the hollow body splittable along its length and configured to move between an open configuration and a closed configuration, the hollow body defining a lumen extending between open proximal and distal ends in the closed configuration;

a radial gasket disposed within the hollow body configured to seal the lumen of the hollow body to prevent gas leakage from a pressurized body cavity through the hollow body in the closed configuration; and

a stopping mechanism configured to prevent insertion of a proximal portion of the hollow body into an incision site of a body cavity, the stopping mechanism disposed at the proximal portion of the hollow body and defining a diameter greater than a diameter of the hollow body in the closed configuration.

13. The device according to claim 12 , wherein the radial gasket is configured to sealingly engage a surgical instrument extending through the lumen of the hollow body to prevent gas leakage from the pressurized body cavity through the hollow body in the closed configuration.

14. The device according to claim 13 , wherein the radial gasket is configured to permit reciprocal linear motion of a surgical instrument through the lumen of the hollow body.

15. The device according to claim 12 , wherein the radial gasket is disposed along an inner surface of the hollow body at a proximal portion thereof.

16. The device according to claim 12 , wherein the radial gasket defines a generally C-shape.

17. The device according to claim 12 , wherein the radial gasket is a soft flexible material chosen from the group consisting of foams and rubbers.

18. The device according to claim 12 , wherein the radial gasket has a plurality of flexible leafs arranged radially about the lumen of the hollow body, the plurality of flexible leafs assuming a closed cone shape in the absence of a surgical instrument with the hollow body in the closed configuration.

19. The device according to claim 12 , further having a linear gasket disposed along at least one of the first or second portions of the hollow body, the linear gasket configured to seal the first and second portions of the hollow body to inhibit gas leakage from the pressurized body cavity therethrough.

20. The device according to claim 12 , wherein the stopping mechanism includes a first portion disposed on an outer surface of the first portion of the hollow body, and a second portion disposed on an outer surface of the second portion of the hollow body.
