Abstract

Systems, methods and apparatus for monitoring soil properties and applying fertilizer during a planting operation. Various sensors are disposed in ground engaging components for monitoring soil properties. The ground engaging components may have structure for opening a side trench in the sidewalls of the seed trench and may include liquid application conduits for injecting liquid into the sidewalls of the resulting side trenches.

Claims (55)

1. A liquid application apparatus for applying liquid to soil during a planting operation, comprising:

a seed firmer mounted to a planter row unit, said planter row unit having an opening system and a closing system, said opening system configured to open a planting trench in the soil with first and second sidewalls as the planter advances in a forward direction of travel, said closing system configured to close the planting trench opened by said opening system as the planter advances in said forward direction of travel, said planter row unit depositing seeds in said planting trench forward of said closing system between said first and second sidewalls as said planter row unit advances in said forward direction of travel, said seed firmer including:

a firmer body having a flexible portion, a tail portion, and a ground engaging portion, said flexible portion providing a resilient downward force on said tail portion, said ground engaging portion mounted to said tail portion and disposed to resiliently engage a bottom portion of said planting trench to firm the previously deposited seeds at the bottom of said planting trench into the soil forward of said closing system as said planter row advances in said forward direction of travel, said tail portion having a first wing opening a first transversely-extending side trench into said first sidewall as said planter row unit advances in said forward direction of travel, and

a first liquid injection conduit mounted to said seed firmer, said first liquid injection conduit injecting liquid into said first transversely-extending side trench after the seeds are deposited and forward of said closing system as said planter row unit advances in said forward direction of travel

wherein said first liquid injection conduit comprises a needle, and wherein said needle has a first internal diameter, wherein said needle is removably mounted to said seed firmer such that said needle is replaceable with a replacement needle, said replacement needle having a second internal diameter, said second internal diameter being larger than said first internal diameter.

2. The liquid application apparatus of claim 1 , wherein said seed firmer includes a second wing opening a second transversely-extending side trench in said second sidewall as said planter row unit advances in said forward direction of travel, and further comprising:

a second liquid injection conduit mounted to said seed firmer, said second liquid injection conduit injecting liquid into said second transversely-extending side trench as said planter row unit advances in said forward direction of travel.

3. The liquid application apparatus of claim 2 , further comprising:

a liquid manifold mounted to said seed firmer, said liquid manifold having an inlet, a first outlet and a second outlet, wherein said first outlet is in fluid communication with said first liquid injection conduit, wherein said second outlet is in fluid communication with said second liquid injection conduit, and wherein said inlet is in fluid communication with a liquid source.

4. The liquid application apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising:

a reflectivity sensor mounted to said seed firmer.

5. The liquid application apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising:

an electrical conductivity sensor mounted to said seed firmer.

6. The liquid application apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising:

a temperature sensor mounted to said seed firmer.

7. The liquid application apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising:

a camera disposed to capture images of said planting trench, said camera in communication with a monitoring device disposed to display said captured images to an operator.

8. A liquid application apparatus for applying liquid to soil during a planting operation, comprising:

a ground-engaging component mounted to a planter row unit, said planter row unit opening a planting trench in the soil as said row unit advances in a forward direction of travel, said planter row unit depositing seeds in said planting trench as said planter row unit advances in said forward direction of travel, the ground-engaging component disposed at least partially within said planting trench as said planter row unit advances in said forward direction of travel;

a first liquid injection conduit mounted to said ground-engaging component and disposed into a first sidewall of said planting trench, said first liquid injection conduit injecting liquid into said first sidewall of said planting trench as said planter row unit advances in said forward direction of travel;

a second liquid injection conduit mounted to said ground-engaging component and disposed to inject liquid into a second sidewall of said planting trench; and

a liquid manifold mounted to said ground-engaging component, said liquid manifold having a first inlet in fluid communication with a first outlet and a second outlet, wherein said first outlet is in fluid communication with said first liquid injection conduit, wherein said second outlet is in fluid communication with said second liquid injection conduit, a second inlet in fluid communication with a third outlet, wherein said third outlet is disposed to inject liquid into a center of said planting trench, and wherein said first inlet and second inlet are in fluid communication with a liquid source.

9. The liquid application apparatus of claim 8 further comprising a pressure balance valve disposed between the liquid source and the first inlet and the second inlet.

10. A liquid application apparatus for applying liquid to soil during a planting operation, comprising:

a ground-engaging component mounted to a planter row unit, said planter row unit having an opening system and a closing system, said opening system configured to open a planting trench in the soil as said row unit advances in a forward direction of travel, said closing system configured to close the planting trench opened by said opening system as the planter advances in said forward direction of travel, said planter row unit depositing seeds in said planting trench forward of said closing system as said planter row unit advances in said forward direction of travel, the ground-engaging component disposed at least partially within said planting trench forward of said closing system as said planter row unit advances in said forward direction of travel, and

a first liquid injection conduit mounted to said ground-engaging component and disposed into a first sidewall of said planting trench, said first liquid injection conduit injecting liquid into said first sidewall of said planting trench after the seeds are deposited and forward of said closing system as said planter row unit advances in said forward direction of travel,

wherein said first liquid injection conduit comprises a needle, and wherein said needle has a first internal diameter, wherein said needle is removably mounted to said ground-engaging component such that said needle is replaceable with a replacement needle, said replacement needle having a second internal diameter, said second internal diameter being larger than said first internal diameter.

11. The liquid application apparatus of claim 10 , further comprising:

a second liquid injection conduit mounted to said ground-engaging component and disposed to inject liquid into a second sidewall of said planting trench.

12. The liquid application apparatus of claim 11 further comprising a third liquid injection conduit mounted to said ground-engaging component and disposed to inject liquid into a center of said planting trench.

13. The liquid application apparatus of claim 11 , further comprising:

a liquid manifold mounted to said ground-engaging component, said liquid manifold having an inlet, a first outlet and a second outlet, wherein said first outlet is in fluid communication with said first liquid injection conduit, wherein said second outlet is in fluid communication with said second liquid injection conduit, wherein said inlet is in fluid communication with a liquid source.

14. The liquid application apparatus of claim 11 , further comprising:

a first wing disposed to open a first side trench in said first sidewall, wherein said first liquid injection conduit is disposed to inject liquid into said first side trench; and

a second wing disposed to open a second side trench in said second sidewall, wherein said second liquid injection conduit is disposed to inject liquid into said second side trench.

15. The liquid application apparatus of claim 10 , further comprising:

a first wing disposed to open a first side trench in said first sidewall, wherein said first liquid injection conduit is disposed to inject liquid into said first side trench.

The liquid application apparatus of claim 10 , wherein said ground-engaging component engages the soil in the bottom of the planting trench, wherein said ground-engaging component is disposed to contact the planting trench at a position forward of a seed deposition location along said forward direction of travel of the planter row unit.

The liquid application apparatus of claim 10 , wherein said ground-engaging component engages the soil in the bottom of the planting trench, wherein said ground-engaging component is disposed to contact the planting trench at a position behind a seed deposition location along a direction of travel of the planter row unit.

18. The liquid application apparatus of claim 17 further comprising:

a seed firmer disposed ahead of the ground-engaging component along a direction of travel of the planter row unit.

19. The liquid application apparatus of claim 10 , further comprising:

a camera disposed to capture images of said planting trench, said camera in communication with a monitoring device disposed to display said captured images to an operator.

20. A liquid application apparatus for applying liquid to soil during a planting operation, comprising:

a ground-engaging component mounted to a planter row unit, said planter row unit having an opening system and a closing system, said opening system configured to open a planting trench in the soil as said row unit advances in a forward direction of travel, said closing system configured to close the planting trench opened by said opening system as the planter advances in said forward direction of travel, said planter row unit depositing seeds in said planting trench forward of said closing system as said planter row unit advances in said forward direction of travel, the ground-engaging component disposed at least partially within said planting trench forward of said closing system as said planter row unit advances in said forward direction of travel, and

a first liquid injection conduit mounted to said ground-engaging component and disposed into a first sidewall of said planting trench, said first liquid injection conduit injecting liquid into said first sidewall of said planting trench after the seeds are deposited and forward of said closing system as said planter row unit advances in said forward direction of travel,

wherein said liquid injection conduit has a biasable shaft disposed in the liquid injection conduit that retracts into said liquid injection conduit under pressure in said liquid injection conduit to open the outlet of said liquid injection conduit.

21. A liquid application apparatus for applying liquid to soil during a planting operation, comprising:

a ground-engaging component mounted to a planter row unit, said planter row unit opening a planting trench in the soil as said row unit advances in a forward direction of travel, said planter row unit depositing seeds in said planting trench as said planter row unit advances in said forward direction of travel, the ground-engaging component disposed at least partially within said planting trench as said planter row unit advances in said forward direction of travel; and a first liquid injection conduit mounted to said ground-engaging component and disposed

into a first sidewall of said planting trench, said first liquid injection conduit injecting liquid into said first sidewall of said planting trench as said planter row unit advances in said forward direction of travel;

wherein said ground-engaging component is mounted in a housing via a height adjustment arm that is pivotably mounted in the housing to allow for height adjustment of said ground-engaging component.

22. A liquid application apparatus for applying liquid to soil during a planting operation, comprising:

a ground-engaging component mounted to a planter row unit, said planter row unit opening a planting trench in the soil as said row unit advances in a forward direction of travel, said planter row unit depositing seeds in said planting trench as said planter row unit advances in said forward direction of travel, the ground-engaging component disposed at least partially within said planting trench as said planter row unit advances in said forward direction of travel ; and

a first liquid injection conduit mounted to said ground-engaging component and disposed into a first sidewall of said planting trench, said first liquid injection conduit injecting liquid into said first sidewall of said planting trench as said planter row unit advances in said forward direction of travel;

wherein said ground-engaging component is mounted in a housing via a spring that is pivotably mounted in the housing to allow for vertical deflection of said ground-engaging component.
