Abstract

A venous access port assembly having a base, a peripheral surface, and a septum. The base defines an interior reservoir. The peripheral surface includes integrally molded X-ray discernable indicia identifying that the assembly is rated for power injection. The X-ray discernable indicia may extend through a height of the peripheral surface from a top surface to a bottom surface thereof. According to one aspect, the peripheral surface may be formed from X-ray discernable material, and the X-ray discernable indicia may be formed from the X-ray discernable material, or they may be formed by voids in the X-ray discernable material. According to another aspect, the peripheral surface may be formed from a radiotransparent or radiolucent material and applied with a radiopaque agent, and the X-ray discernable indicia may be one or more voids in the radiopaque agent or may be portions of the peripheral surface applied with the radiopaque agent.

Claims (43)

1. A Venous access port assembly for implantation into a patient, comprising:

a housing securing a needle penetrable septum, the housing comprising:

a housing base defining at least one reservoir; and

a peripheral portion extending outwardly of the housing, the peripheral portion comprising at least partially of a radiopaque material and X-ray discernible indicia shaped to indicate CT or computed tomography under X-ray examination, and the venous access port assembly is rated for power injection,

wherein the X-ray discernible indicia is one or more voids extending through at least a portion of the radiopaque material,

wherein the radiopaque material of the peripheral portion in which the X-ray discernible indicia is formed at least partially surround the at least one reservoir.

2. The venous access port assembly of claim 1 , wherein the housing further comprises a skirt overmolded about at least a portion of the housing base.

3. The venous access port assembly of claim 2 , wherein the skirt is further overmolded about the peripheral portion.

4. The venous access port assembly of claim 2 , wherein the skirt comprises a radiotransparent or radiolucent material.

5. The venous access port assembly of claim 1 , wherein the X-ray discernible indicia further indicate, under X-ray examination, that the venous access port assembly is adapted to withstand high pressures used for injection of contrast fluid.

6. The venous access port assembly of claim 1 , wherein the X-ray discernible indicia extend through a height of the radiopaque material of the peripheral portion from a top surface of the radiopaque material to a bottom surface of the radiopaque material.

7. The venous access port assembly of claim 1 , wherein the peripheral portion extends outwardly from the at least one reservoir.

8. The venous access port assembly of claim 1 , wherein the peripheral portion extends outwardly from the housing base about a perimeter of the at least one reservoir.

9. The venous access port assembly of claim 1 , wherein the housing base further comprises a flange and the peripheral portion includes at least a portion of the flange.

10. The venous access port assembly of claim 1 , wherein the peripheral portion includes at least a portion of the housing base.

11. A venous access port assembly for implantation into a patient, comprising:

a housing comprising:

a housing base defining at least one reservoir; and

X-ray discernible indicia shaped to indicate CT or computed tomography under X-ray examination, wherein the X-ray discernible indicia is formed within or onto a peripheral portion of the venous access port assembly, the peripheral portion comprising at least partially of a radiopaque material in which or onto which the X-ray discernible indicia is formed, wherein the radiopaque material of the peripheral portion in which or onto which the X-ray discernible indicia is formed at least partially surround the at least one reservoir; and

a needle-penetrable septum.

12. The venous access port assembly of claim 11 , wherein the peripheral portion further comprises one or more voids extending through a height of the peripheral portion.

13. The venous access port assembly of claim 12 , wherein the X-ray discernible indicia are the one or more voids in the radiopaque material of the peripheral portion.

14. The venous access port assembly of claim 11 , wherein the peripheral portion extends outwardly from the at least one reservoir.

15. The venous access port assembly of claim 11 , wherein the peripheral portion extends outwardly from the housing base about a perimeter of the at least one reservoir.

16. The venous access port assembly of claim 11 , wherein the housing further comprises a radiotransparent or radiolucent skirt overmolded about at least a portion of the housing base.

17. The venous access port assembly of claim 16 , wherein the radiotransparent or radiolucent skirt is further overmolded about the peripheral portion.

18. The venous access port assembly of claim 11 , wherein the X-ray discernible indicia further indicate, under X-ray examination, that the venous access port assembly is adapted to withstand high pressures used for injection of contrast fluid.

19. The venous access port assembly of claim 11 , wherein the housing base further comprises a flange and the peripheral portion includes at least a portion of the flange.

20. The venous access port assembly of claim 11 , wherein the peripheral portion includes at least a portion of the housing base.

21. A venous access port assembly for implantation into a patient, comprising:

a housing comprising:

a housing base comprising a well comprising a bottom floor and side walls, the bottom floor and side walls defining at least one reservoir; and

X-ray discernible indicia shaped to indicate CT or computed tomography under X-ray examination, wherein the X-ray discernible indicia is formed within or onto at least a portion of a peripheral portion, the peripheral portion extending radially from the well so as to be disposed around the at least one reservoir, the peripheral portion comprising at least partially of a radiopaque material, wherein the radiopaque material of the peripheral portion in which or onto which the X-ray discernible indicia is formed at least partially surround the at least one reservoir; and

a needle-penetrable septum.

22. The venous access port assembly of claim 21 , wherein the peripheral portion further comprises one or more voids extending through a height of the peripheral portion.

23. The venous access port assembly of claim 22 , wherein the X-ray discernible indicia are the one or more voids in the radiopaque material of the peripheral portion.

24. The venous access port assembly of claim 21 , wherein the peripheral portion extends outwardly from the well.
