Abstract

An adaptable spinal facet joint prosthesis may include a pedicle fixation element; a laminar fixation element; and a facet joint bearing surface having a location adaptable with respect at least one of the pedicle fixation element and the laminar fixation element. Methods of implanting an adaptable spinal facet joint prosthesis may include determining a desired position for a facet joint bearing surface; and attaching a prosthesis comprising a facet joint bearing surface to a pedicle portion of a vertebra and a lamina portion of a vertebra to place the facet joint bearing surface in the desired position. A facet joint prosthesis implant tool may include a tool guide adapted to guide a vertebra cutting tool; and first and second fixation hole alignment elements extending from the saw guide. Systems for treating spinal pathologies may include intervertebral discs in combination with spinal and facet joint prostheses.

Claims (27)

1. A system for treating spinal pathologies comprising:

a first cephalad prosthesis element and a second cephalad prosthesis element, wherein the first cephalad prosthesis element comprises a first cephalad bearing element and the second cephalad prosthesis element comprises a second cephalad bearing element;

a first caudal prosthesis having a first caudal cup and a second caudal prosthesis having a second caudal cup, wherein the first cephalad bearing element is received in the first caudal cup and the second cephalad bearing element is received in the second caudal cup;

a crossbar element connected to the first and second cephalad prosthesis elements; and

a crossbar lock comprising a dual clamp housing having a first opening for receiving the first cephalad prosthesis and a second opening for receiving the crossbar element, wherein the crossbar lock comprises a single fastener that is received in the first opening and urges the dual clamp housing to clamp down on the first cephalad prosthesis and on the crossbar element,

wherein the crossbar element is slidable relative to the first and second cephalad prosthesis elements.

2. The spinal prosthesis according to claim 1 , further includes a configurable portion that is part of the first cephalad prosthesis element or the second cephalad prosthesis element.

3. The spinal prosthesis according to claim 2 wherein the configurable portion is the height of the first or the second cephalad prosthesis element relative to the crossbar element.

4. The spinal prosthesis according to claim 2 wherein the configurable portion is the angle formed between the first cephalad prosthesis element and the crossbar element or the angle formed between the second cephalad prosthesis element and the crossbar element.

5. The spinal prosthesis according to claim 2 wherein the configurable portion is the angle formed between an axial plane passing through the crossbar element and either the first cephalad prosthesis element or the second cephalad prosthesis element.

The spinal prosthesis according to claim 5 wherein the angle formed between the first cephalad prosthesis element and an axial plane passing through the crossbar element is the same as the angle formed between the second cephalad prosthesis element and an axial plane passing through the crossbar element.

7. The spinal prosthesis according to claim 1 , wherein the shape of the elbow defines an arm-stem angle of 90°.

The spinal prosthesis according to claim 1 , wherein the first and second cephalad prosthesis element comprises an arm, an elbow and a stem wherein the arm has a crossbar engaging end and is attached to the elbow and the stem has a distal tip and is attached to the elbow and the shape of the elbow defines an arm-stem angle.

9. A system for treating spinal pathologies comprising:

a first cephalad prosthesis element and a second cephalad prosthesis element;

a first caudal prosthesis having a first caudal cup and a second caudal prosthesis having a second caudal cup;

a crossbar element connected to the first and second cephalad prosthesis elements, the crossbar element having a first end received at least partially within the first caudal cup and a second end received at least partially within the second caudal cup; and

a crossbar lock comprising a dual clamp housing having a first opening for receiving the first cephalad prosthesis and a second opening for receiving the crossbar element, wherein the crossbar lock comprises a single fastener that is received in the first opening and urges the dual clamp housing to clamp down on the first cephalad prosthesis and on the crossbar element,

wherein the crossbar element is slidable relative to the first and second cephalad prosthesis elements and

wherein the first and second caudal cups limit the movement of the crossbar element relative to the first and second prosthesis elements in at least one direction.

10. The spinal prosthesis according to claim 9 , further includes a configurable portion that is part of the first cephalad prosthesis element or the second cephalad prosthesis element.

11. The spinal prosthesis according to claim 10 wherein the configurable portion is the height of the first or the second cephalad prosthesis element relative to the crossbar element.

12. The spinal prosthesis according to claim 10 wherein the configurable portion is the angle formed between the first cephalad prosthesis element and the crossbar element or the angle formed between the second cephalad prosthesis element and the crossbar element.

13. The spinal prosthesis according to claim 10 wherein the configurable portion is the angle formed between an axial plane passing through the crossbar element and either the first cephalad prosthesis element or the second cephalad prosthesis element.

14. The spinal prosthesis according to claim 13 wherein the angle formed between the first cephalad prosthesis element and an axial plane passing through the crossbar element is the same as the angle formed between the second cephalad prosthesis element and an axial plane passing through the crossbar element.

15. The spinal prosthesis according to claim 9 , wherein the shape of the elbow defines an arm-stem angle of 90°.

16. The spinal prosthesis according to claim 9 , wherein the first and second cephalad prosthesis element comprises an arm, an elbow and a stem wherein the arm has a crossbar engaging end and is attached to the elbow and the stem has a distal tip and is attached to the elbow and the shape of the elbow defines an arm-stem angle.
