Abstract

An endoscopic forceps is provided and includes a housing having a shaft that extends therefrom. An end effector assembly is operatively connected to a distal end of the shaft and includes a pair of pivotably coupled first and second jaw members. One of the jaw members is movable relative to the other jaw member. A drive mechanism includes a driving structure in operative communication with a cam slot operably disposed on one of the first and second jaw members. The driving structure includes a detent.

Claims (15)

1. An endoscopic forceps, comprising:

a housing having a shaft that extends therefrom and defining a longitudinal axis therethrough;

an end effector assembly operatively connected to a distal portion of the shaft and including first and second jaw members, at least one of the first or second jaw members movable relative to the other jaw member about a pivot pin from an open position to a clamping position; and

a drive mechanism including a driving structure having a blocking member supported thereon, the driving structure including a distal portion configured to translate within at least one cam slot defined in the movable jaw member,

wherein the distal portion of the driving structure is configured to flex relative to the longitudinal axis when positioned at a proximal portion of the cam slot, and

wherein the proximal portion of the cam slot is substantially aligned with the pivot pin and a distal portion of the cam slot is offset from the proximal portion and the pivot pin.

2. An endoscopic forceps according to claim 1 , further including a stop member disposed within the shaft, wherein a distal portion of the stop member contacts a proximal portion of the blocking member when the driving structure moves proximally.

3. An endoscopic forceps according to claim 1 , wherein the driving structure includes a distal tip.

4. An endoscopic forceps according to claim 3 , wherein a camming structure is operably coupled to the distal tip of the driving structure and operably disposed within the cam slot.

An endoscopic forceps according to claim 4 , wherein the stop member is operably disposed adjacent the distal portion of the shaft and configured to contact the blocking member when the driving structure moves proximally such that contact between the stop member and the blocking member corresponds to the distal tip being positioned at the proximal portion of the cam slot causing the movable jaw member to move from the open position to the clamping position.

An endoscopic forceps according to claim 5 , wherein when the distal tip of the driving structure is disposed at the proximal portion of the cam slot and tissue is positioned between the first and second jaw members, a closure force ranging from about 3 kg/cm 2 to about 16 kg/cm′ is generated between the first and second jaw members.

7. An endoscopic forceps according to claim 1 , wherein the driving structure is selected from the group consisting of a wire rod, a cable, and a band.

An endoscopic forceps according to claim 1 , further comprising a movable handle operably associated with the housing and configured to actuate the driving mechanism when the movable handle is moved proximally such that the movable jaw member moves from the open position to the clamping position.

9. An endoscopic forceps according to claim 1 , wherein the blocking member is a detent.

10. An endoscopic forceps according to claim 1 , wherein the driving structure includes a distal end configured to translate within the cam slot.
