Fuel injection system
A fuel injector is provided. The fuel injector includes a sleeve having a first end proximate an outlet; a piston slidingly received in the sleeve, the piston having a first end proximate the outlet; a pumping chamber at least partially defined by the sleeve between the first end of the piston and the outlet; and a normally-open inlet valve through which fuel passes to enter the pumping chamber.
1. A fuel injector assembly, comprising:
a housing;
a piston disposed in the housing;
an electromagnetic actuator coupled to the piston by a cage, the electromagnetic actuator including a magnet and a coil and configured to produce a force sufficient to move the cage and the piston to pressurize fuel upon energizing the coil; and
an outlet valve assembly located in the housing and configured to direct pressurized fuel out of the fuel injector assembly, wherein the outlet valve assembly comprises:
a valve seat;
a moveable valve body;
a spring biasing the moveable valve body against the valve seat;
an orifice member located downstream of the valve seat and the moveable valve body, wherein the orifice member includes one or more orifices through which the pressurized fuel can pass to exit the fuel injector assembly; and
a member located downstream of the valve seat and the moveable valve body, wherein at least one of the member and the orifice member is configured to receive the spring.
2. The fuel injector assembly of claim 1 , wherein the member includes a cup for receiving the spring.
3. The fuel injector assembly of claim 1 , wherein the orifice member includes a cup for receiving the spring.
4. The fuel injector assembly of claim 3 , wherein the orifice member is a plate.
5. The fuel injector assembly of claim 1 , wherein the spring is a helical spring, and wherein the valve body is a spherical ball.
6. The fuel injector assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a turbulence generating member located downstream of the valve seat, wherein the turbulence generating member includes one or more openings.
7. The fuel injector assembly of claim 6 , wherein the turbulence generating member is a plate.
8. A fuel injector assembly comprising:
a housing;
a piston disposed in the housing;
an electromagnetic actuator coupled to the piston, the electromagnetic actuator including a magnet and a coil and configured to drive the piston to pressurize fuel upon energizing the coil;
an outlet valve assembly located in the housing and configured to direct pressurized fuel out of the fuel injector assembly, wherein the outlet valve assembly comprises:
a valve seat;
a moveable valve body; and
a spring biasing the moveable valve body against the valve seat such that the outlet valve assembly is normally closed;
an orifice member located downstream of the valve seat and the moveable valve body, wherein the orifice member includes one or more orifices through which the pressurized fuel can pass; and
a turbulence generating member disposed downstream of the valve seat and including one or more openings configured to increase a velocity of the pressurized fuel.
9. The fuel injector assembly of claim 8 , further comprising a member for receiving the spring, wherein the member is located downstream of the valve seat and the moveable valve body.
10. The fuel injector assembly of claim 9 , wherein the member includes a cup for receiving the spring.
11. The fuel injector assembly of claim 8 , wherein the orifice member includes a cup for receiving the spring.
12. The fuel injector assembly of claim 8 , wherein the spring is a helical spring, and wherein the valve body is a spherical ball.
13. The fuel injector assembly of claim 8 , wherein the orifice member is a plate.
14. A fuel injector assembly comprising:
a housing;
a piston disposed in the housing;
an electromagnetic actuator coupled to the piston, the electromagnetic actuator including a magnet and a coil and configured to drive the piston in response to energizing the coil;
an outlet valve assembly located in the housing and configured to direct pressurized fuel out of the fuel injector assembly, wherein the outlet valve assembly comprises:
a valve seat;
a moveable valve body; and
a spring biasing the moveable valve body against the valve seat such that the outlet valve assembly is normally closed;
an orifice plate located downstream of the valve seat and the moveable valve body, wherein the orifice plate includes one or more orifices through which the pressurized fuel can pass; and
a turbulence generating plate disposed downstream of the valve seat and including one or more openings configured to increase a velocity of the pressurized fuel.
15. The fuel injector assembly of claim 14 , further comprising a member for receiving the spring, wherein the member is located downstream of the valve seat and the moveable valve body.
16. The fuel injector assembly of claim 15 , wherein the member includes a cup for receiving the spring.
17. The fuel injector assembly of claim 14 , wherein the orifice member includes a cup for receiving the spring.
18. The fuel injector assembly of claim 14 , wherein the spring is a helical spring, and wherein the valve body is a spherical ball.
