Abstract

An implantable device may be provided. The implantable device may comprise an upper assembly comprising a ramped base and a pair of opposing windows. The pair of opposing windows may extend upward from either lateral side of the ramped base. A gripping assembly may be disposed in each window. The implantable device may further comprise a lower assembly comprising a ramped base and a pair of opposing windows. The pair of opposing windows may extend down from either lateral side of the ramped base. A gripping assembly is disposed in each window. The implantable device may further comprise a ramped actuator assembly disposed between the upper assembly and the lower assembly. The ramped actuator may be configured to transition the implantable device from a collapsed form having a first height to an expanded form having a second height and wherein the second height is greater than the first height.

Claims (29)

1. An implantable device, comprising:

an upper assembly comprising a base and a pair of opposing upper gripping assemblies extending upward from the base;

a lower assembly comprising a base and a pair of opposing lower gripping assemblies extending down from the base; and

a ramped actuator assembly disposed between the upper assembly and the lower assembly and configured to transition the implantable device having a first height to an expanded a second height and wherein the second height is greater than the first height,

wherein the ramped actuator assembly comprises: a front ramped actuator in engagement with the upper assembly and the lower assembly;

a rear ramped actuator in engagement with the upper assembly and the lower assembly; and a central screw that extends from the rear ramped actuator through the front ramped actuator,

wherein when the central screw is rotated, the front ramped actuator and the rear ramped actuator are moved away from one another, causing the upper assembly and the lower assembly to move towards one another.

2. The implantable device of claim 1 , wherein at least one gripping assembly of the upper assembly and/or the lower assembly comprises a telescoping subassembly and a spike plate assembly disposed in the telescoping assembly.

3. The implantable device of claim 2 , wherein the telescoping subassembly is configured to traverse a selected distance upon rails.

4. The implantable device of claim 3 , wherein the telescoping subassembly is guided on the rails by a dovetail connection.

5. The implantable device of claim 2 , wherein the telescoping subassembly comprises a flange that engages the corresponding window to prevent backing out of the telescoping subassembly.

6. The implantable device of claim 2 , wherein each spike plate assembly is configured to move inward toward the opposing window a selected distance, wherein each spike plate assembly travels a portion of the selected distance with the corresponding telescoping subassembly.

7. The implantable device of claim 1 , wherein the base of the upper assembly comprises a pair of angled wedges in engagement with the ramped actuator assembly, and wherein the base of the lower assembly comprises a pair of angled wedges in engagement with the ramped actuator assembly.

8. The implantable device of claim 7 , wherein the angled wedges of the upper assembly slope in opposite directions, and wherein the angled wedges of the lower assembly slope in opposite wedges.

9. The implantable device of claim 7 , wherein the base of the upper assembly comprises a pocket between the pair of angled wedges, and wherein the base of the lower assembly comprises a pocket between the pair of angled wedges.

10. An implantable device, comprising:

an upper assembly comprising a base and a pair of opposing upper gripping assemblies extending upward from the base;

a lower assembly comprising a base and a pair of opposing lower gripping assemblies extending down from the base; and

a ramped actuator assembly disposed between the upper assembly and the lower assembly and configured to transition the implantable device having a first height to an expanded a second height and wherein the second height is greater than the first height

wherein the ramped actuator assembly comprises a central screw and is configured, when the central screw is rotated in a first direction, to cause the upper assembly and the lower assembly to move away from one another,

wherein when the central screw is rotated in a second direction, the ramp actuator causes the upper assembly and the lower assembly to move towards one another.

11. The implantable device of claim 10 , wherein at least one gripping assembly of the upper assembly and/or the lower assembly comprises a telescoping subassembly and a spike plate assembly disposed in the telescoping assembly.

12. The implantable device of claim 11 , wherein the telescoping subassembly is configured to traverse a selected distance upon rails.

13. The implantable device of claim 12 , wherein the telescoping subassembly is guided on the rails by a dovetail connection.

14. The implantable device of claim 11 , wherein the telescoping subassembly comprises a flange that engages the corresponding window to prevent backing out of the telescoping subassembly.

15. The implantable device of claim 11 , wherein each spike plate assembly is configured to move inward toward the opposing window a selected distance, wherein each spike plate assembly travels a portion of the selected distance with the corresponding telescoping subassembly.

16. The implantable device of claim 10 , wherein the base of the upper assembly comprises a pair of angled wedges in engagement with the ramped actuator assembly, and wherein the base of the lower assembly comprises a pair of angled wedges in engagement with the ramped actuator assembly.

17. The implantable device of claim 16 , wherein the angled wedges of the upper assembly slope in opposite directions, and wherein the angled wedges of the lower assembly slope in opposite wedges.

18. The implantable device of claim 16 , wherein the base of the upper assembly comprises a pocket between the pair of angled wedges, and wherein the base of the lower assembly comprises a pocket between the pair of angled wedges.
