Abstract

Exemplary embodiments are directed to butterfly valves, generally including a body assembly. The body assembly generally includes a body, a disc rotationally disposed inside an opening of the body, a bearing disposed inside the disc and the body, and a stem passing through the disc, the bearing and the body. The bearing generally includes an internal bearing edge. The stem generally includes an external stem edge to engage the internal bearing edge to prevent stem blowout from the body. Methods of assembling and positioning a butterfly valve are also provided.

Claims (78)

1. A butterfly valve, comprising:

a body assembly, the body assembly including a body, a disc rotationally disposed inside an opening of the body, a bearing disposed inside the disc and the body, and a stem passing through the disc, the bearing and the body; and

a seal retainer positioned within a corresponding disc bore in the disc and a corresponding liner bore in a liner,

wherein the bearing includes an internal bearing edge provided as an internal bearing step,

wherein the stem includes a first external stem edge,

wherein the first external stem edge forms a step, the step abutting and engaging the internal bearing step when the butterfly valve is assembled to retain the stem along a vertical axis and prevent stem blowout from the body along the vertical axis,

wherein the stem includes a second external stem edge to engage the seal retainer to position the seal retainer within the corresponding liner bore in the liner,

wherein the stem defines a first section and a second section connected at the first external stem edge, and a third section connected to the second section at the second external stem edge, and

wherein the first section, the second section, and the third section of the stem define different external configurations.

2. The butterfly valve according to claim 1 , wherein the body comprises a blind hole aligned with the corresponding disc bore and the corresponding liner bore.

3. The butterfly valve according to claim 2 , wherein the seal retainer is positioned against the body.

4. The butterfly valve according to claim 1 , wherein the body comprises a through hole aligned with the corresponding disc bore and the corresponding liner bore for passage of the seal retainer therethrough.

5. The butterfly valve according to claim 1 , wherein the first section defines a round external configuration, the second section defines a hexagonal external configuration, and the third section defines a square external configuration.

6. The butterfly valve according to claim 5 , wherein a central portion of the corresponding disc bore defines an internal configuration complementary to the second section of the stem.

7. The butterfly valve according to claim 6 , wherein the bearing defines a first internal configuration complementary to the second section of the stem and a second internal configuration complementary to the third section of the stem.

8. The butterfly valve according to claim 1 , wherein the stem includes no fluid seals positioned around a stem shaft.

9. A method of assembling a butterfly valve, comprising:

providing a body assembly, the body assembly including a body defining an opening, a disc, a bearing, a liner, and a stem, wherein (a) the bearing includes an internal bearing step, (b) the stem includes a first external stem edge forming a step, (c) the stem defines a first section and a second section connected at the first external stem edge, and a third section connected to the second section at a second external stem edge, and (d) the first section, the second section, and the third section of the stem define different external configurations,

positioning a seal retainer within a disc bore in the disc,

positioning the disc within the opening of the body,

passing the stem through a body bore and the disc bore,

positioning the seal retainer within a corresponding liner bore in the liner by engaging the seal retainer with the second external stem edge of the stem when passing the stem through the body bore and the disc bore, and

positioning the bearing through the body bore and around the stem to abut and engage the internal bearing step of the bearing with the step of the stem when the butterfly valve is assembled to retain the stem along a vertical axis and prevent stem blowout from the body along the vertical axis.

10. The method according to claim 9 , wherein the step of positioning the seal retainer within the disc bore in the disc comprises aligning a blind hole in the body with the liner bore in the liner and the disc bore in the disc.

11. The method according to claim 10 , comprising passing the seal retainer partially through the liner bore and against the body.

12. The method according to claim 9 , wherein the step of positioning the seal retainer within the disc bore in the disc comprises passing the seal retainer through a through hole in the body aligned with the liner bore in the liner and the disc bore in the disc.

13. A butterfly valve, comprising:

a body assembly, the body assembly including a body, a disc rotationally disposed inside an opening of the body, a bearing disposed inside the disc and the body, a gland, and a stem passing through the disc, the bearing and the body; and

a seal retainer positioned within a corresponding disc bore in the disc and a corresponding liner bore in a liner,

wherein the bearing includes an internal bearing step,

wherein the stem includes a first external stem edge forming a step to abut and engage the internal bearing step when the butterfly valve is assembled to retain the stem along a vertical axis and prevent stem blowout from the body along the vertical axis, and

wherein the gland is positioned against an internal surface of the body to prevent stem blowout from the body,

wherein the stem includes a second external stem edge to engage the seal retainer to position the seal retainer within the corresponding liner bore in the liner,

wherein the stem defines a first section and a second section connected at the first external stem edge, and a third section connected to the second section at the second external stem edge, and

wherein the first section, the second section, and the third section of the stem define different external configurations.

14. The butterfly valve according to claim 13 , wherein the gland positioned against the internal surface of the body limits movement of the stem within the body in a direction parallel to the vertical axis of the stem.

15. The butterfly valve according to claim 13 , wherein the gland positioned against the internal surface of the body limits movement of the seal retainer in the direction parallel to the vertical axis of the stem.

16. The butterfly valve according to claim 13 , wherein the gland is positioned against an upper surface of the bearing.

17. The butterfly valve according to claim 13 , wherein the gland maintains a position of the stem within the body without providing a seal between the stem and the body.

18. A method of assembling a butterfly valve, comprising:

providing a body assembly, the body assembly including a body defining an opening, a disc, a bearing, a liner, a gland, and a stem, wherein (a) the bearing includes an internal bearing step, (b) the stem includes a first external stem edge forming a step, (c) the stem defines a first section and a second section connected at the first external stem edge, and a third section connected to the second section at a second external stem edge, and (d) the first section, the second section, and the third section of the stem define different external configurations,

positioning a seal retainer within a disc bore in the disc,

positioning the disc within the opening of the body,

passing the stem through a body bore and the disc bore,

positioning the seal retainer within a corresponding liner bore in the liner by engaging the seal retainer with the second external stem edge of the stem when passing the stem through the body bore and the disc bore,

positioning the bearing through the body bore and around the stem to abut and engage the internal bearing step of the bearing with the step of the stem when the butterfly valve is assembled to retain the stem along a vertical axis and prevent stem blowout from the body along the vertical axis, and

positioning the gland against an internal surface of the body to prevent stem blowout from the body.

19. The method according to claim 18 , comprising limiting movement of the stem within the body in a direction parallel to the vertical axis of the stem by positioning the gland against the internal surface of the body.

20. The method according to claim 18 , comprising limiting movement of the seal retainer within the body in a direction parallel to the vertical axis of the stem by positioning the gland against the internal surface of the body.

21. A butterfly valve, comprising:

a body assembly, the body assembly including (i) a body, (ii) a disc rotationally disposed inside an opening of the body, (iii) a bearing disposed inside the disc and the body, (iv) a stem passing through the disc, the bearing and the body, and (v) a seal retainer positioned within a corresponding disc bore in the disc and a corresponding liner bore in a liner,

wherein the bearing includes an internal bearing edge,

wherein the stem includes a first external stem edge to engage the internal bearing edge to prevent stem blowout from the body,

wherein the stem includes a second external stem edge to engage the seal retainer to position the seal retainer within the corresponding liner bore in the liner,

wherein the stem defines a first section and a second section connected at the first external stem edge, and a third section connected to the second section at the second external stem edge, and

wherein the first section, the second section, and the third section of the stem define different external configurations.

22. A method of assembling a butterfly valve, comprising:

providing a body assembly, the body assembly including (i) a body defining an opening, (ii) a disc, (iii) a bearing, (iv) a stem, (v) a seal retainer, and (vi) a liner, wherein (a) the bearing includes an internal bearing edge, (b) the stem includes a first external stem edge to engage the internal bearing edge, (c) the stem defines a first section and a second section connected at the first external stem edge, and a third section connected to the second section at a second external stem edge, and (d) the first section, the second section, and the third section of the stem define different external configurations,

positioning the seal retainer within a corresponding disc bore in the disc and a corresponding liner bore in the liner, the stem including a second external stem edge to engage the seal retainer to position the seal retainer within the corresponding liner bore in the liner,

positioning the disc within the opening of the body,

passing the stem through a body bore and the disc bore, and

positioning the bearing through the body opening and around the stem to engage the internal bearing edge of the bearing with the first external stem edge to prevent stem blowout from the body.

23. A butterfly valve, comprising:

a body assembly, the body assembly including (i) a body defining a threaded counter bore, (ii) a disc rotationally disposed inside an opening of the body, (iii) a bearing disposed inside the disc and the body, the bearing including an internal bearing step, (iv) a gland having threads, (v) a stem passing through the disc, the bearing and the body, and (vi) a seal retainer positioned within a corresponding disc bore in the disc and a corresponding liner bore in a liner,

wherein the stem includes a first external stem edge forming a step to abut and engage the internal bearing step when the butterfly valve is assembled to retain the stem along a vertical axis and prevent stem blowout from the body along the vertical axis,

wherein the gland threadedly engages the threaded counter bore and is positioned against an internal surface of the body to prevent stem blowout from the body,

wherein the stem includes a second external stem edge to engage the seal retainer to position the seal retainer within the corresponding liner bore in the liner,

wherein the stem defines a first section and a second section connected at the first external stem edge, and a third section connected to the second section at the second external stem edge, and

wherein the first section, the second section, and the third section of the stem define different external configurations.

24. A method of assembling a butterfly valve, comprising:

providing a body assembly, the body assembly including a body defining a threaded counter bore and an opening, a disc, a bearing, a liner, a gland having threads, a stem, and a seal retainer, wherein (a) the bearing includes an internal bearing step, (b) the stem includes a first external stem edge forming a step, (c) the stem defines a first section and a second section connected at the first external stem edge, and a third section connected to the second section at a second external stem edge, and (d) the first section, the second section, and the third section of the stem define different external configurations,

positioning the seal retainer within a disc bore in the disc,

positioning the disc within the opening of the body,

passing the stem through a body bore and the disc bore,

positioning the seal retainer within a corresponding liner bore in the liner by engaging the seal retainer with the second external stem edge of the stem when passing the stem through the body bore and the disc bore,

positioning the bearing through the body bore and around the stem,

engaging the threads of the gland with the threaded counter bore, and

positioning the gland against an internal surface of the body to prevent stem blowout from the body.
