Abstract

Wave energy conversion systems are provided utilizing a mass of water entrained in a collapsible water mass enclosure that is suspended beneath a float (e.g., a vehicle, buoy, platform, etc.) to provide an inertial force in opposition to the rising heave-induced acceleration of the float. The water mass enclosure is communication with a generator, such as by tethering one end of a tethering means to the generator and the other to the enclosure. The enclosure may be placed in communication with an intermediary hydraulic system, which is also in communication with the generator. In certain embodiments, the system will include a reel system for deploying and retrieving the water masse enclosure.

Claims (12)

1. A wave energy capture system comprising:

a water mass enclosure device for use in a body of water including a surface float, the water mass enclosure comprising a rigid bucket for holding water therein, wherein responsive to wave action, at least part of the rigid bucket is exposed out of the water while holding water therein; and

a hydraulic subsystem located on the surface float and in communication with the water mass enclosure, the hydraulic subsystem including:

a lever arm in communication with the water mass enclosure device suspended therefrom via a tethering means having some elasticity, including a swivel mechanism for reducing torsion load, and further in communication with a hydraulic cylinder, the hydraulic cylinder comprising a piston and hydraulic fluid;

a rotary hydraulic motor in communication with the hydraulic cylinder and further in communication with a generator adapted to convert mechanical energy of the hydraulic motor to electrical energy;

wherein the rigid bucket is moved by waves in the body of water which are not in phase with motion of the surface float, wherein downward movement of the water mass enclosure device, including the rigid bucket, causes the lever to move, forcing hydraulic fluid through the rotary hydraulic motor via the hydraulic cylinder, thereby causing the generator to produce electrical energy.

2. The wave energy capture system of claim 1 , wherein the rigid bucket is conical in shape.

3. A wave energy capture system comprising:

a water mass enclosure device for use in a body of water including a surface float, the water mass enclosure comprising a rigid bucket conical in shape for holding water therein, wherein responsive to wave action, at least part of the rigid bucket is exposed out of the water while holding water therein; and

a hydraulic subsystem located on the surface float in communication with the water mass enclosure;

wherein the rigid bucket is moved by waves in the body of water which are not in phase with motion of the surface float, such movement generating energy using the hydraulic subsystem; and

wherein the hydraulic subsystem includes a lever arm in communication with the water mass enclosure device suspended therefrom via a tethering means having some elasticity, the tethering means including a swivel mechanism for reducing torsion load, and further in communication with a hydraulic cylinder, the hydraulic cylinder comprising a piston and hydraulic fluid, a rotary hydraulic motor in communication with the hydraulic cylinder and further in communication with a generator adapted to convert mechanical energy of the hydraulic motor to electrical energy, wherein downward movement of the water mass enclosure device causes the lever to move, forcing hydraulic fluid through the rotary hydraulic motor via the hydraulic cylinder, thereby causing the generator to produce electrical energy.
