Abstract

A diffusion device for atomizing liquids includes a floating magnet disposed within a track inside at least one package with liquid for the atomizing diffusion device, wherein as a liquid level inside the package changes, the floating magnet moves substantially vertically along the track, a plurality of Hall effect sensors or Hall effect switches disposed outside the liquid at various positions, the Hall effect sensors or Hall effect switches each generating an output voltage in response to a magnetic field of the floating magnet, and a processor that receives the output voltages and fits them to a model that includes the floating magnet position with respect to various sets of output voltages to determine a position of the floating magnet with respect to the Hall effect sensors.

Claims (31)

1 . A method of managing scent in an environment, comprising:

disposing at least one scent diffusion device within an environment, wherein the at least one scent diffusion device comprises a communications facility that enables transmitting signals to and receiving signals from a remote computer;

receiving at least one target value of a scent parameter for the environment at the remote computer; and

controlling, via the remote computer, diffusion of a liquid from a source of the liquid in fluid communication with the at least one scent diffusion device to achieve the target value of the scent parameter,

wherein controlling a diffusion rate of the liquid includes altering at least one of power and a duty cycle applied to at least one component of the diffusion device.

2 . The method of claim 1 , further comprising, applying a scent level instruction to an operational parameter of the at least one component of the scent diffusion device to control diffusion of the liquid.

3 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the operational parameter is a duty cycle.

4 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the component is a fan and the operational parameter is a fan speed.

5 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the component is a nozzle and the operational parameter is a nozzle pressure.

6 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the component is a pump and the operational parameter is a pump power.

7 . The method of claim 2 , wherein the scent level bias is scaled by a known amount in accordance with an aspect of at least one of the device, the scent being diffused, and the target value of the scent parameter.

8 . The method of claim 1 , wherein the at least one component is a pump and the diffusion rate is controlled by altering the power to the pump.

9 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the power is controlled by altering the voltage across the pump.

10 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the power is controlled by altering the current to the pump.

11 . The method of claim 8 , wherein the power to the pump is controlled by pulse width modulation.

12 . The method of claim 1 , wherein controlling the diffusion rate of the liquid also controls a plume size of a scent.

13 . A method of managing scent in an environment, comprising:

disposing at least one scent diffusion device within an environment, wherein the at least one scent diffusion device comprises a communications facility that enables transmitting signals to and receiving signals from a remote computer;

disposing at least one wind sensor within the environment that transmits sensor data to the remote computer;

receiving at least one target value of a scent parameter for the environment at the remote computer; and

based on the wind sensor data, controlling, via the remote computer, diffusion of a liquid from a source of the liquid in fluid communication with the at least one scent diffusion device to achieve the target value of the scent parameter,

wherein controlling includes setting or adjusting an operation parameter of the at least one scent diffusion device in response to the wind sensor data, wherein the operational parameter includes at least one of power and a duty cycle of a pump.

14 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the operational parameter is power provided to the pump, and the power is controlled by altering the voltage across the pump.

15 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the operational parameter is power provided to the pump, and the power is controlled by altering the current to the pump.

16 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the operational parameter is power provided to the pump, and the power is controlled by pulse width modulation.

17 . The method of claim 13 , wherein the operational parameter is power provided to the pump to control a plume size of a scent.

18 . The method of claim 13 , further comprising activating a fan disposed adjacent to or integrated with the device that is activated in response to the wind sensor.

19 . A method of managing scent in an environment, comprising:

disposing at least one scent diffusion device within an environment, wherein the at least one scent diffusion device comprises a communications facility that enables transmitting signals to and receiving signals from a remote computer;

receiving at least one target value of a scent parameter for the environment at the remote computer; and

controlling, via the remote computer, a plume size of a liquid diffused from a source of the liquid in fluid communication with the at least one scent diffusion device to achieve the target value of the scent parameter.
