Abstract

A system for detecting an analyte gas including a system housing having an inlet system, an electrochemical gas sensor within the housing and in fluid connection with the inlet system, the electrochemical sensor including a working electrode responsive to the analyte gas, and a control system in electrical connection with the working electrode. The control system is operative to bias the working electrode at a first potential at which the electrochemical gas sensor is responsive to the analyte gas and operative to bias the working electrode at a second potential, different from the first potential, at which the electrochemical gas sensor is sensitive to a driving force created in the vicinity of the inlet system to test at least one transport path of the system.

Claims (25)

1. A system for detecting a first gas that is an analyte gas, comprising:

a system housing comprising an inlet system;

an electrochemical gas sensor within the housing and in fluid connection with the inlet system, the electrochemical sensor comprising a working electrode responsive to the analyte gas, and

a control system in electrical connection with the working electrode, the control system being operative to bias the working electrode at a first potential at which the electrochemical gas sensor is responsive to the first gas and operative to bias the working electrode at a second potential, different from the first potential, at which the electrochemical gas sensor is sensitive to a second gas, different from the first gas, wherein a concentration of the second gas is changed by a driving force created exterior to the inlet to test at least one transport path of the system and the control system is further operative to measure the change in the concentration of the second gas while the working electrode is biased at the second potential to test at least one transport path of the system from outside the housing to the electrochemical gas sensor.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein the driving force comprises (a) application of exhaled breath or (b) restricting entry of molecules into the inlet system.

3. The system of claim 2 wherein the working electrode is responsive to carbon dioxide at the second potential.

4. The system of claim 1 wherein the working electrode is responsive to oxygen at the second potential.

5. The system of claim 1 wherein the control system is adapted to cause electronic interrogation of the electrochemical sensor to test the functionality thereof to detect the analyte gas.

6. The system of claim 1 wherein the control system is further adapted to simulate the presence of the analyte gas electronically; and measure a response of the electrochemical gas sensor to the electronic simulation.

7. The system of claim 6 wherein the control system is adapted to cause a constant current to flow between the working electrode and a counter electrode of the electrochemical gas sensor and the measured response is a potential difference.

8. The system of claim 6 wherein the control system is adapted to maintain a constant potential difference between the working electrode and a counter electrode of the electrochemical sensor and the measured response is a current.

9. The system of claim 1 wherein the electrochemical gas sensor comprises a sensor housing comprising at least one inlet into an interior of the sensor housing, the working electrode being positioned within the sensor housing.

10. The system of claim 1 wherein the working electrode comprises an eletrocatalytically active material deposited upon a porous membrane through which gas can diffuse.

11. An electrochemical sensor for detecting a first gas that is an analyte gas in an environment, comprising:

a working electrode responsive to the analyte gas, and

a control system in electrical connection with the working electrode, the control system being operative to bias the working electrode at a first potential at which the electrochemical sensor is responsive to the first gas and biasing the working electrode at a second potential, different from the first potential, at which the sensor is sensitive to a second gas, different from the first gas, wherein a concentration of the second gas is changed by a driving force created exterior to an inlet system and the control system is further operative to measure a change in the concentration of the second gas resulting from the driving force while the working electrode is biased at the second potential to test at least one transport path from the environment to the working electrode.

12. The electrochemical sensor of claim 11 wherein the driving force comprises (a) application of exhaled breath or (b) restricting entry of molecules into the inlet system.

13. The electrochemical sensor of claim 12 wherein the working electrode is responsive to carbon dioxide at the second potential.

14. The electrochemical sensor of claim 11 wherein the working electrode is responsive to oxygen at the second potential.

15. The electrochemical sensor of claim 11 wherein the control system is adapted to cause electronic interrogation of the electrochemical sensor to test the functionality thereof to detect the analyte gas.

16. The electrochemical sensor of claim 11 wherein the control system is further adapted to simulate the presence of the analyte gas electronically; and measure a response of the electrochemical gas sensor to the electronic simulation.

17. The electrochemical sensor of claim 16 wherein the control system is adapted to cause a constant current to flow between the working electrode and a counter electrode of the electrochemical gas sensor and the measured response is a potential difference.

18. The electrochemical sensor of claim 16 wherein the control system is adapted to maintain a constant potential difference between the working electrode and a counter electrode of the electrochemical sensor and the measured response is a current.
