Abstract

The invention provides compounds of formulae I, II, III, and IV: and salts thereof, as well as pharmaceutical compositions comprising such compounds. The compounds are useful for treating cancers and Alzheimer's disease.

Claims (17)

1. A method for inhibiting cancer cell growth comprising contacting the cell in vitro or in vivo with an effective amount of a compound of formula II:

or a salt thereof wherein:

R 1 is H, or (C 1 -C 6 )alkyl, wherein each (C 1 -C 6 )alkyl, that is optionally substituted with one or more groups independently selected from halo;

the bond represented by --- is a single bond or a double bond;

D is

R 2 is COOH; and R 3 and R 4 are each H;

wherein the cancer is colon cancer.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the bond represented by --- is a single bond.

6. A method for inhibiting cancer cell growth comprising contacting the cell in vitro or in vivo with an effective amount of the compound:

7. A method for inhibiting cancer cell growth comprising contacting the cell in vitro or in vivo with an effective amount of a compound selected from the group consisting of:

or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof; wherein the cancer is colon cancer.

8. A method for inhibiting cancer cell growth comprising contacting the cell in vitro or in vivo with an effective amount of a compound selected from the group consisting of:

or a pharmaceutically acceptable salt thereof; wherein the cancer is colon cancer.
