Abstract

A fiber optic-based communications network includes: a power insertion device, connected to multiple fiber links from a data source, configured to provide power insertion to a hybrid fiber/power cable connected to at least one fiber link of the multiple fiber links; the hybrid fiber/power cable, connecting the power insertion device to a connection interface device, configured to transmit data and power from the power insertion device to the connection interface device; and the connection interface device, configured to provide an interface for connection to an end device via a power over Ethernet (PoE)-compatible connection and to provide optical to electrical media conversion for data transmitted from the power insertion device to an end device via the hybrid fiber/power cable and the PoE-compatible connection.

Claims (11)

1. A connection interface device, comprising:

a first interface disposed in a routing layer of the connection interface device, configured to receive a hybrid cable comprising wires for power transmission and one or more fibers for data transmission, wherein, in the routing layer, the one or more fibers from the hybrid cable are terminated at one or more respective fiber connectors, and wherein the routing layer is configured to accommodate multiple windings of the one or more fibers;

one or more Universal Serial Bus (USB) Type-C interfaces disposed in an electronics layer of the connection interface device; and

a USB host disposed in the electronics layer of the connection interface device, configured to manage data and power transmission to one or more USB peripheral devices via the one or more USB Type-C interfaces;

wherein the one or more USB peripheral devices are connected to a fiber-based Ethernet network via the connection interface device.

2. The connection interface device according to claim 1 , wherein the USB host is further configured to deactivate for a USB host device connected to one of the one or more USB Type-C interfaces, relegating management of data and power transmission to the USB host device.

3. The connection interface device according to claim 1 , wherein each of the one or more USB Type-C interfaces is configured to provide up to 100 W of power through the respective USB Type-C interface.

4. The connection interface device according to claim 1 , further comprising:

a second interface, configured to receive a second hybrid cable, a data-only cable, or a power-only cable.

5. The connection interface device according to claim 1 , wherein the connection interface device is a wall-mount device.

6. The connection interface device according to claim 1 , wherein the connection interface device is a dongle.
