Abstract

An integrated adhesive sensor array includes an adhesive a patch, a sensor hub, and a detachable sensor pod packaged as a unit. The patch may include a docking area for the detachable sensor pod. The detachable sensor pod may include at least one sensor and may be configured to be detached from the patch and applied to various locations on a body. The detachable sensor pod may send sensor data to the sensor hub via a wired link when on the patch and via a wireless link when detached from the patch. The sensor hub receives sensor data from the detachable sensor pod and relays the data to a receiver. The sensor hub and detachable sensor pod may include indicators for communicating information. The sensor hub may include a power source for powering the sensor hub and a detachable sensor pod attached to the main sensor unit or patch.

Claims (38)

1. An integrated adhesive sensor array for measuring a physical or physiological parameter of a body, comprising:

a sensor hub;

a detachable sensor pod comprising sensors to sense a physical or physiological parameter;

means for establishing a first communication link between the sensor hub and a wireless receiver;

means for attaching at least the sensor hub directly to a body;

means for establishing a second communication link between the detachable sensor pod and the sensor hub;

means for transmitting sensor data of the physical or physiological parameter from the detachable sensor pod to the sensor hub via the second communication link; and

means for transmitting the sensor data of the physical or physiological parameter from the sensor hub to the wireless receiver via the first communication link.

2. The integrated adhesive sensor array of claim 1 , further comprising means for generating a first indication of establishing of the first communication link between the sensor hub and the wireless receiver.

3. The integrated adhesive sensor array of claim 2 , wherein the second communication link comprises a wired communication link when the detachable sensor pod is attached to the integrated adhesive sensor array, the integrated adhesive sensor array further comprising:

means for establishing a third communication link between the detachable sensor pod and the sensor hub in response to the detachable sensor pod being detached from the integrated adhesive sensor array, the third communication link comprising a wireless communication link; and

means for transmitting sensor data of the physical or physiological parameter from the detachable sensor pod to the sensor hub via the third communication link when the detachable sensor pod is detached from the integrated adhesive sensor array.

4. The integrated adhesive sensor array of claim 3 , further comprising:

means for determining whether a position of the detachable sensor pod on the body is proper for measuring the physical or physiological parameter in response to the detachable sensor pod being detached from the integrated adhesive sensor array; and

means for generating a second indication regarding whether the position of the detachable sensor pod on the body is proper for measuring the physical or physiological parameter.

5. The integrated adhesive sensor array of claim 4 , wherein means for determining whether a position of the detachable sensor pod on the body is proper for measuring the physical or physiological parameter comprises:

means for comparing a signal from a sensor associated with the detachable sensor pod to a threshold value of an acceptable sensor signal; and

means for determining that the position of the detachable sensor pod on the body is proper in response to the signal from the sensor associated with the detachable sensor pod satisfying the threshold value of an acceptable sensor signal.

6. The integrated adhesive sensor array of claim 4 , wherein means for determining whether a position of the detachable sensor pod on the body is proper for measuring the physical or physiological parameter comprises:

means for determining a current location of the detachable sensor pod with respect to the body;

means for comparing the current location of the detachable sensor pod with respect to the body to a proper placement location for the detachable sensor pod; and

means for determining that the position of the detachable sensor pod on the body is proper in response to the current location of the detachable sensor pod comparing favorably to the proper placement location for the detachable sensor pod.

7. The integrated adhesive sensor array of claim 6 , wherein means for generating a second indication regarding whether the position of the detachable sensor pod on the body is proper for measuring the physical or physiological parameter comprises:

means for generating the second indication in response to determining, by the means for determining, that the current location of the detachable sensor pod compares favorably to the proper placement location; and

means for generating a third indication different from the second indication in response to determining that the current location of the detachable sensor pod does not compare favorably to the proper placement location.

8. The integrated adhesive sensor array of claim 7 , wherein the first indication, the second indication and the third indication comprise one or more of a color display indication, an audible indication, and an alphanumeric display indication.

9. The integrated adhesive sensor array of claim 1 , wherein the means for attaching at least the sensor hub directly to the body comprises means for affixing the sensor hub to a surface having an irregular contour.

10. The integrated adhesive sensor array of claim 1 , further comprising means for mechanically coupling the detachable sensor pod with the means for attaching at least the sensor hub directly to the body.

11. The integrated adhesive sensor array of claim 1 , further comprising means for mechanically coupling a plurality of detachable sensor pods including the detachable sensor pod with the means for attaching at least the sensor hub directly to the body.

12. The integrated adhesive sensor array of claim 1 , further comprising means for electrically coupling the detachable sensor pod with the sensor hub to supply power to the detachable sensor pod.

13. The integrated adhesive sensor array of claim 12 , wherein the second communication link is established via the means for electrically coupling the detachable sensor pod with the sensor hub.

14. The integrated adhesive sensor array of claim 13 , wherein the sensor hub comprises means for harvesting energy and means for storing the energy; and

wherein the means for electrically coupling the detachable sensor pod with the sensor hub comprise means for transferring the harvested energy from the sensor hub to the detachable sensor pod.

15. The integrated adhesive sensor array of claim 14 , wherein the energy is harvested from an energy source comprises at least one of: light, heat, or movement.

16. The integrated adhesive sensor array of claim 14 , wherein the sensor data is first sensor data;

wherein the physical or physiological parameter is a first physical or physiological parameter; and
