Abstract

Techniques are disclosed for estimating patient radiation exposure during computerized tomography (CT) scans. More specifically, embodiments of the invention provide efficient approaches for generating a suitable patient model used to make such an estimate, to approaches for estimating patient dose by interpolating the results of multiple simulations, and to approaches for a service provider to host a dose estimation service made available to multiple CT scan providers.

Claims (117)

1. A computer-implemented method for determining an estimate of radiation dose absorbed by a first individual in receiving an imaging scan, the method comprising:

receiving a set of parameters describing the imaging scan and an image scanning apparatus being used to perform the imaging scan of the first individual;

receiving a deformed mathematical phantom corresponding to the first individual;

accessing a simulation library comprising a plurality of previously completed simulations estimating radiation dose absorption corresponding to one or more second individuals;

evaluating the plurality of previously completed simulations estimating radiation dose absorption corresponding to the one or more second individuals;

looking up, based on the evaluation, one of the plurality of previously completed simulations in the simulation library having a set of parameters that matches within a specified tolerance measure the set of parameters describing the imaging scan and the image scanning apparatus and the deformed mathematical phantom corresponding to the first individual; and

determining the estimate of radiation dose absorption associated with the one of the previously completed simulations looked up in the simulation library as the estimate of radiation dose absorbed by the first individual.

2. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the imaging scan is a computerized tomography (CT) scan.

3. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the deformed mathematical phantom corresponding to the first individual is selected based on at least one of an age, a gender, a weight and a height of the first individual.

The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the deformed mathematical phantom corresponding to the first individual is deformed by determining, via an image registration process, a transformation between at least one localizer image associated with an initial mathematical phantom and at least one scout image of the first individual.

5. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the deformed mathematical phantom corresponding to the first individual is deformed by:

selecting an initial mathematical phantom for the first individual , the selecting being based on at least one of an age, a gender, a weight and a height of the first individual;

segmenting a reference CT scan associated with the first individual to identify a three-dimensional (3D) volume of at least some portion of the first individual present in the reference CT scan and identify therein a plurality of anatomical landmarks comprising at least one or an organ, tissue and other structure of the first individual;

for at least one of the plurality of anatomical landmarks identified in the segmented reference CT scan, determining a centroid thereof;

matching one or more of the plurality of anatomical landmarks identified in the segmented reference CT scan to corresponding anatomical landmarks in the initial mathematical phantom;

deforming the initial mathematical phantom based on a result of the matching whereby the deformed mathematical phantom resulting therefrom better matches a size, a shape and organ positions of the first individual, wherein deforming the initial mathematical phantom comprises:

determining a three dimensional (3D) displacement map representing displacement from at least one of the centroids of the anatomical landmarks identified in the segmented reference CT scan to centroids of the corresponding anatomical landmarks of the initial mathematical phantom;

voxelizing the initial mathematical phantom; and

transforming the voxelized initial mathematical phantom to match the three dimensional displacement map.

6. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the estimate of radiation dose absorbed by the first individual provides estimates of an organ absorbed dose for one or more organs of the first individual.

7. The computer-implemented method of claim 1 , wherein the deformed mathematical phantom corresponding to the first individual is generated by:

selecting an initial mathematical phantom for the first individual, the selecting being based on at least one of an age, a gender, a weight and a height of the first individual;

receiving one or more scout images of the first individual;

selecting from images obtained from multiple individuals a reference set of localizer images having a body geometry, size and positioning that closely matches the initial mathematical phantom;

determining a transformation between at least one of the localizer images and at least one of the scout images of the first individual; and

deforming the initial mathematical phantom based on the transformation whereby the deformed mathematical phantom resulting from the transformation better matches a size, a shape and organ positions of the first individual.

8. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing one or more application programs, which, when executed by a processor, performs an operation for determining an estimate of radiation dose absorbed by a first individual in receiving an imaging scan, the operation comprising:

receiving a set of parameters describing the imaging scan and an image scanning apparatus being used to perform the imaging scan of the first individual;

receiving a deformed mathematical phantom corresponding to the first individual;

accessing a simulation library comprising a plurality of previously completed simulations estimating radiation dose absorption corresponding to one or more second individuals;

evaluating the plurality of previously completed simulations estimating radiation dose absorption corresponding to the one or more second individuals;

looking up, based on the evaluation, of one of the plurality of previously completed simulations in the simulation library having a set of parameters that matches within a specified tolerance measure the set of parameters describing the imaging scan and the image scanning apparatus and the deformed mathematical phantom corresponding to the first individual; and

determining the estimate of radiation dose absorption associated with the one of the previously completed simulations looked up in the simulation library as the estimate of radiation dose absorbed by the first individual.

9. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 8 , wherein the imaging scan is a computerized tomography (CT) scan.

10. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 8 , wherein the deformed mathematical phantom corresponding to the first individual is selected based on at least one of an age, a gender, a weight and a height of the first individual.

The computer-readable storage medium of claim 10 , wherein the deformed mathematical phantom corresponding to the first individual is deformed by determining, via an image registration process, a transformation between at least one localizer image associated with an initial imaging phantom and at least one scout image of the first individual.

12. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 10 , wherein the deformed mathematical phantom corresponding to the first individual is deformed by:

selecting an initial mathematical phantom for the first individual , the selecting being based on at least one of an age, a gender, a weight and a height of the first individual;

segmenting a reference CT scan associated with the first individual to identify a three-dimensional (3D) volume of at least some portion of the first individual present in the reference CT scan and identify therein a plurality of anatomical landmarks comprising at least one of an organ, tissue and other structure of the first individual;

for at least one of the plurality of anatomical landmarks identified in the segmented reference CT scan, determining a centroid thereof;

matching one or more of the plurality of anatomical landmarks identified in the segmented reference CT scan to corresponding anatomical landmarks in the initial mathematical phantom;

deforming the initial mathematical phantom based on a result of the matching whereby the deformed mathematical phantom resulting therefrom better matches a size, a shape and organ positions of the first individual, wherein deforming the initial mathematical phantom comprises:

determining a three dimensional (3D) displacement map representing displacement from at least one of the centroids of the anatomical landmarks identified in the segmented reference CT scan to centroids of the corresponding anatomical landmarks of the initial mathematical phantom;

voxelizing the initial mathematical phantom; and

transforming the voxelized initial mathematical phantom to match the three dimensional displacement map.

13. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 8 , wherein the estimate of radiation dose absorbed by the first individual provides estimates of an organ absorbed dose for one or more organs of the first individual.

14. The computer-readable storage medium of claim 8 , wherein the deformed mathematical phantom corresponding to the first individual is generated by:

selecting an initial mathematical phantom for the first individual, the selecting being based on at least one of an age, a gender, a weight and a height of the first individual;

receiving one or more scout images of the first individual;

selecting from images obtained from multiple individuals a reference set of localizer images having a body geometry, size and positioning that closely matches the initial mathematical phantom;

determining a transformation between at least one of the localizer images and at least one of the scout images of the first individual; and

deforming the initial mathematical phantom based on the transformation whereby the deformed mathematical phantom resulting from the transformation better matches a size, a shape and organ positions of the first individual.

15. A system, comprising:

a processor; and

a memory storing an application program configured to perform an operation for determining an estimate of radiation dose absorbed by a first individual in receiving an imaging scan, the operation comprising:

receiving a set of parameters describing the imaging scan and an image scanning apparatus being used to perform the imaging scan of the first individual;

receiving a deformed mathematical phantom corresponding to the first individual;

accessing a simulation library comprising a plurality of previously completed simulations estimating radiation dose absorption corresponding to one or more second individuals;

evaluating the plurality of previously completed simulations estimating radiation dose absorption corresponding to the one or more second individuals;

looking up, based on the evaluation, one of the plurality of previously completed simulations in the simulation library having a set of parameters that matches within a specified tolerance measure the set of parameters describing the imagining scan and the image scanning apparatus and the deformed mathematical phantom corresponding to the first individual; and

determining the estimate of radiation dose absorption associated with the one of the previously completed simulations looked up in the simulation library as the estimate of radiation dose absorbed by the first individual.

16. The system of claim 15 , wherein the imaging scan is a computerized tomography (CT) scan.

17. The system of claim 15 , wherein the deformed mathematical phantom corresponding to the first individual is selected based on at least one of an age, a gender, a weight and a height of the first individual.

The system of claim 17 , wherein the deformed mathematical phantom corresponding to the first individual is deformed by determining, via an image registration process, a transformation between at least one localizer image associated with an initial imaging phantom and at least one scout image of the first individual.

19. The system of claim 17 , wherein the deformed mathematical phantom corresponding to the first individual is deformed by:

selecting an initial mathematical phantom for the first individual, the selecting being based on at least one of an age, a gender, a weight and a height of the first individual;

segmenting a reference CT scan associated with the first individual to identify a three-dimensional (3D) volume of at least some portion of the first individual present in the reference CT scan and identify therein a plurality of anatomical landmarks comprising at least one of an organ, tissue and other structure of the first individual;

for at least one of the plurality of anatomical landmarks identified in the segmented reference CT scan, determining a centroid thereof;

matching one or more of the plurality of anatomical landmarks identified in the segmented reference CT scan to corresponding anatomical landmarks in the initial mathematical phantom;

deforming the initial mathematical phantom based on a result of the matching whereby the deformed mathematical phantom resulting therefrom better matches a size, a shape and organ positions of the first individual, wherein deforming the initial mathematical phantom comprises:

determining a three dimensional (3D) displacement map representing displacement from at least one of the centroids of the anatomical landmarks identified in the segmented reference CT scan to centroids of the corresponding anatomical landmarks of the initial mathematical phantom;

voxelizing the initial mathematical phantom; and

transforming the voxelized initial mathematical phantom to match the three dimensional displacement map.

20. The system of claim 15 , wherein the estimate of radiation dose absorbed by the first individual provides estimates of an organ absorbed dose for one or more organs of the first individual.

21. The system of claim 15 , wherein the deformed mathematical phantom corresponding to the first individual is generated by:

selecting an initial mathematical phantom for the first individual, the selecting being based on at least one of an age, a gender, a weight and a height of the first individual;

receiving one or more scout images of the first individual;

selecting from images obtained from multiple individuals a reference set of localizer images having a body geometry, size and positioning that closely matches the initial mathematical phantom;

determining a transformation between at least one of the localizer images and at least one of the scout images of the first individual; and

deforming the initial mathematical phantom based on the transformation whereby the deformed mathematical phantom resulting from the transformation better matches a size, a shape and organ positions of the first individual.

22. A computer-implemented method for determining an estimate of radiation dose absorbed by a first individual in receiving an imaging scan, the method comprising:

receiving a set of parameters describing the imaging scan and an image scanning apparatus being used to perform the imaging scan of the first individual;

receiving a deformed mathematical phantom corresponding to the first individual;

accessing a simulation library comprising a plurality of previously completed simulations estimating radiation dose absorption corresponding to one or more second individuals;

evaluating the plurality of previously completed simulations estimating radiation dose absorption corresponding to the one or more second individuals; and

upon determining, based on the evaluation, that two or more of the previously completed simulations in the simulation library have a set of parameters that match with a specified tolerance measure the set of parameters describing the imaging scan and the image scanning apparatus and the deformed mathematical phantom corresponding to the first individual, interpolating the estimates of radiation dose in the two or more previously completed simulations to determine the estimate of radiation dose absorbed by the first individual in receiving the imaging scan.

The computer-implemented method of claim 22 , further comprising, upon determining that the simulation library does not include at least two previously completed simulations that match within the specified tolerance measure the set of parameters describing the imaging scan and the image scanning apparatus and the deformed mathematical phantom corresponding to the first individual;

performing a simulation of the imaging scan using the deformed mathematical phantom corresponding to the first individual and the set of parameters describing the imagining scan and the image scanning apparatus;

estimating, based on the performed simulation, an amount of radiation absorbed by the first individual as a result of receiving the imaging scan; and

adding the performed simulation to the plurality of previously completed simulations in the simulation library.

24. The computer-implemented method of claim 22 , wherein the estimate of radiation dose absorbed by the first individual provides estimates of an organ absorbed dose for one or more organs of the first individual.

25. A system, comprising:

a processor; and

a memory storing an application program configured to perform an operation for determining an estimate of radiation dose absorbed by a first individual in receiving an imaging scan, the operation comprising:

receiving a set of parameters describing the imaging scan and an image scanning apparatus being used to perform the imaging scan of the first individual;

receiving a deformed mathematical phantom corresponding to the first individual;

accessing a simulation library comprising a plurality of previously completed simulations estimating radiation dose absorption corresponding to one or more second individuals;

evaluating the plurality of previously completed simulations estimating radiation dose absorption corresponding to the one or more second individuals; and

upon determining, based on the evaluation, that two or more of the previously completed simulations in the simulation library have a set of parameters that match with a specified tolerance measure the set of parameters describing the imaging scan and the image scanning apparatus and the deformed mathematical phantom corresponding to the first individual, interpolating the estimates of radiation dose in the two or more previously completed simulations to determine the estimate of radiation dose absorbed by the first individual in receiving the imaging scan.

26. The system of claim 25 , wherein the operation further comprises:

upon determining that the simulation library does not include at least two previously completed simulations that match within the specified tolerance measure the set of parameters describing the imaging scan and the image scanning apparatus and the deformed mathematical phantom corresponding to the first individual:

performing a simulation of the imaging scan using the deformed mathematical phantom corresponding to the first individual and the set of parameters describing the imaging scan and the image scanning apparatus;

estimating, based on the performed simulation, an amount of radiation absorbed by the first individual as a result of receiving the imaging scan; and

adding the performed simulation to the plurality of previously completed simulations in the simulation library.

27. The system of claim 25 , wherein the estimate of radiation dose absorbed by the first individual provides estimates of an organ absorbed dose for one or more organs of the first individual.

28. A non-transitory computer-readable storage medium storing one or more application programs, which, when executed by a processor, performs an operation for determining an estimate of radiation dose absorbed by a first individual in receiving an imaging scan, the operation comprising:

receiving a set of parameters describing the imaging scan and an image scanning apparatus being used to perform the imaging scan of the first individual;

receiving a deformed mathematical phantom corresponding to the first individual;

accessing a simulation library comprising a plurality of previously completed simulations estimating radiation dose absorption corresponding to one or more second individuals;

evaluating the plurality of previously completed simulations estimating radiation dose absorption corresponding to the one or more second individuals; and

upon determining, based on the evaluation, that two or more of the previously completed simulations in the simulation library have a set of parameters that match with a specified tolerance measure the set of parameters describing the imaging scan and the image scanning apparatus and the deformed mathematical phantom corresponding to the first individual, interpolating the estimates of radiation dose in the two or more previously completed simulations to determine the estimate of radiation dose absorbed by the first individual in receiving the imaging scan.

29. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 28 , wherein the operation further comprises:

upon determining that the simulation library does not include at least two previously completed simulations that match within the specified tolerance measure the set of parameters describing the imaging scan and the image scanning apparatus and the deformed mathematical phantom corresponding to the first individual:

performing a simulation of the imaging scan using the deformed mathematical phantom corresponding to the first individual and the set of parameters describing the imaging scan and the image scanning apparatus;

estimating, based on the performed simulation, an amount of radiation absorbed by the first individual as a result of receiving the imaging scan; and

adding the performed simulation to the plurality of previously completed simulations in the simulation library.

30. The non-transitory computer-readable storage medium of claim 28 , wherein the estimate of radiation dose absorbed by the first individual provides estimates of an organ absorbed dose for one or more organs of the first individual.
