Abstract

Call handoff from an 802.1x network to a cellular network, and vice versa. A wireless device that has both cellular and 802.1x capability detects the strength of a cellular signal and of an 802.1x signal. If a call is taking place over the 802.1x network and the strength of the 802.1x signal drops below a particular level and the strength of the cellular signal is above a certain level, the call is handed off from the 802.1x network to the cellular network. If a call is taking place over the cellular network and the cellular signal strength drops below a certain level while the 802.1x signal strength is above a certain level, the call is handed off from the cellular network to the 802.1x network. In addition, the user of the wireless device can manually initiate the handoff by actuating a handoff selector of the wireless device.

Claims (48)

1. A method comprising:

if the call control server determines that the second signal strength exceeds a sum of the first signal strength and the value

obtaining, by the call control server, a communication from the access point of the 802.1x network, the communication comprising information associated with the call, wherein the information comprises an IP address of the wireless device on the 802.1x network, a connect time of the wireless device, and an identifier associated with the wireless device,

sending, by the call control server, the information to a media gateway, wherein the media gateway causes a handoff of the call from the 802.1x network to the cellular network,

causing, by the call control server, a communication link between the wireless device and the cellular network to be established using the information, and

causing, by the call control server, the wireless device to release resources associated with the first connection after the communication link has been established, wherein the call is continued on the communication link; and

if the call control server determines that the second signal strength does not exceed the sum of the first signal strength and the value, maintaining, by the call control server, the call on the 802.1x network.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein causing the wireless device to release the resources associated with the first connection comprises causing the access point to terminate the first connection.

3. The method of claim 1 , further comprising using the connect time included in the information for billing purposes.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the call control server comprises a session initiation protocol server.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising:

setting up, by the call control server, call signaling for the call.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the value is set by a selector switch, and wherein the value is used to prevent the handoff.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the first signal strength is determined by the wireless device, and wherein the wireless device determines the first signal strength by querying the 802.1x network and measuring a signal strength associated with a response to the querying.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the second signal strength is determined by the wireless device, and wherein the wireless device determines the second signal strength by querying the cellular network and measuring a signal strength associated with a response to the querying.

9. A device comprising:

a processor; and

a memory that stores computer-executable instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to perform operations comprising

obtaining a first signal strength associated with a first connection between a wireless device and an access point of an 802.1x network, a second signal strength associated with a second connection between the wireless device and a cellular network, and a value associated with a selector of the wireless device, wherein a call has been initiated on the 802.1x network by the wireless device,

if a determination is made that the second signal strength exceeds a sum of the first signal strength and the value

obtaining a communication from the access point of the 802.1x network, the communication comprising information associated with the call, wherein the information comprises an IP address of the wireless device on the 802.1x network, a connect time of the wireless device, and an identifier associated with the wireless device,

sending the information to a media gateway, wherein the media gateway causes a handoff of the call from the 802.1x network to the cellular network,

causing a communication link between the wireless device and the cellular network to be established using the information, and

causing the wireless device to release resources associated with the first connection after the communication link has been established, wherein the call is continued on the communication link, and

if a determination is made that the second signal strength does not exceed the sum of the first signal strength and the value, maintaining the call on the 802.1x network.

10. The device of claim 9 , wherein causing the wireless device to release the resources associated with the first connection comprises causing the access point to terminate the first connection.

11. The device of claim 9 , wherein the value is set by a selector switch, and wherein the value is used to prevent the handoff.

12. The device of claim 9 , wherein the first signal strength is determined by the wireless device, and wherein the wireless device determines the first signal strength by querying the 802.1x network and measuring a signal strength associated with a response to the querying.

13. The device of claim 9 , wherein the second signal strength is determined by the wireless device, and wherein the wireless device determines the second signal strength by querying the cellular network and measuring a signal strength associated with a response to the querying.

14. The device of claim 9 , wherein the computer-executable instructions, when executed by the processor, cause the processor to perform operations further comprising:

setting up call signaling for the call.

15. A system comprising:

a media gateway; and

a call control server comprising a processor and a memory, wherein the memory stores computer-executable instructions that, when executed by the processor, cause the call control server to perform operations comprising

obtaining a first signal strength associated with a first connection between a wireless device and an access point of an 802.1x network, a second signal strength associated with a second connection between the wireless device and a cellular network, and a value associated with a selector of the wireless device, wherein a call has been initiated on the 802.1x network by the wireless device,
