Abstract

A radio and power pole that includes a pipe defining a longitudinal interior cavity for storing modular electronic equipment (e.g., radios) is described. The radio and power pole can also include mounting channels extending longitudinally proximate to an interior surface of the interior cavity of the pipe, a structural spine extending longitudinally through the interior cavity of the pipe, ribs spaced apart from one another proximate to the interior surface throughout the interior cavity of the pipe, doors for accessing the interior cavity of the pipe, and a vent trap. The radio and power pole can be configured as a direct bury radio and power pole (possibly including one or more vaults). A radio and power pole can include a precast pier connected to the pipe and configured to support the pipe when the pier is inserted into the ground. A radio and power pole can include a bench disposed about the pipe.

Claims (31)

1 . A radio and power pole assembly with precast pier comprising:

a pipe defining a longitudinal interior cavity for storing modular electronic equipment;

wiring extending into the pipe for connecting to the modular electronic equipment;

a precast pier configured to support the pipe above a support surface, the precast pier comprising a laterally extending pad structure having a generally rectangular first horizontal cross-sectional area distal to the pipe and a vertically extending intermediate structure having a generally circular second horizontal cross-sectional area proximal to the pipe, the second horizontal cross-sectional area less than the first horizontal cross-sectional area, the vertically extending intermediate structure configured to mount the pipe, the first horizontal cross-sectional area and the second horizontal cross-sectional area generally centered about the pipe; and

conduit extending through the precast pier for routing the wiring through the precast pier to the interior cavity of the pipe, the conduit routed through the precast pier to exit the precast pier in a direction generally parallel with the support surface.

The radio and power pole assembly with precast pier as recited in claim 1 , further comprising a mounting channel extending longitudinally proximate to an interior surface of the interior cavity of the pipe, a structural spine extending longitudinally through the interior cavity of the pipe, and a plurality of ribs spaced apart from one another proximate to the interior surface of the interior cavity of the pipe, the mounting channel and the structural spine connected together by the plurality of ribs.

3 . The radio and power pole assembly with precast pier as recited in claim 1 , wherein the pipe defines a first vent for drawing air into the interior cavity, and a second vent space apart from the first vent for exhausting the air from the interior cavity.

4 . The radio and power pole assembly with precast pier as recited in claim 1 , further comprising a door for accessing the interior cavity of the pipe.

5 . The radio and power pole assembly with precast pier as recited in claim 1 , further comprising a vent trap.

6 . A method comprising:

forming a hole in a support surface for receiving a precast pier, the precast pier configured to support a radio and power pole above the support surface, the radio and power pole defining a longitudinal interior cavity for storing modular electronic equipment, the precast pier including conduit extending through the precast pier for routing the wiring through the precast pier to the interior cavity of the radio and power pole, the conduit routed through the precast pier to exit the precast pier in a direction generally parallel with the support surface;

direct burying the precast pier in the support surface; and

connecting the radio and power pole to the precast pier and extending the wiring into the radio and power pole for connecting to the modular electronic equipment.

7 . The method as recited in claim 6 , further comprising leveling the precast pier.

8 . The method as recited in claim 7 , further comprising applying grout around the precast pier while the precast pier is held level.

The method as recited in claim 6 , wherein the radio and power pole comprises a mounting channel extending longitudinally proximate to an interior surface of the interior cavity of the pipe, a structural spine extending longitudinally through the interior cavity of the pipe, and a plurality of ribs spaced apart from one another proximate to the interior surface of the interior cavity of the pipe, the mounting channel and the structural spine connected together by the plurality of ribs.

10 . The method as recited in claim 6 , wherein the pipe defines a first vent for drawing air into the interior cavity, and a second vent space apart from the first vent for exhausting the air from the interior cavity.

11 . The method as recited in claim 6 , wherein the radio and power pole comprises a door for accessing the interior cavity of the pipe.

12 . The method as recited in claim 6 , wherein the radio and power pole comprises a vent trap.

13 . A radio and power pole assembly with precast pier comprising:

a pipe defining a longitudinal interior cavity for storing modular electronic equipment;

wiring extending into the pipe for connecting to the modular electronic equipment;

a precast pier configured to support the pipe above a support surface; and

conduit extending through the precast pier for routing the wiring through the precast pier to the interior cavity of the pipe, the conduit routed through the precast pier to exit the precast pier in a direction generally parallel with the support surface.

The radio and power pole assembly with precast pier as recited in claim 13 , wherein the precast pier comprises a laterally extending pad structure having a first horizontal cross-sectional area distal to the pipe and a vertically extending intermediate structure having a second horizontal cross-sectional area less than the first horizontal cross-sectional area proximal to the pipe, the vertically extending intermediate structure configured to mount the pipe.

15 . The radio and power pole assembly with precast pier as recited in claim 14 , wherein the first horizontal cross-sectional area and the second horizontal cross-sectional area are generally centered about the pipe.

16 . The radio and power pole assembly with precast pier as recited in claim 14 , wherein the first horizontal cross-sectional area is generally rectangular and the second horizontal cross-sectional area is generally circular.

The radio and power pole assembly with precast pier as recited in claim 14 , further comprising a mounting channel extending longitudinally proximate to an interior surface of the interior cavity of the pipe, a structural spine extending longitudinally through the interior cavity of the pipe, and a plurality of ribs spaced apart from one another proximate to the interior surface of the interior cavity of the pipe, the mounting channel and the structural spine connected together by the plurality of ribs.

18 . The radio and power pole assembly with precast pier as recited in claim 14 , wherein the pipe defines a first vent for drawing air into the interior cavity, and a second vent space apart from the first vent for exhausting the air from the interior cavity.

19 . The radio and power pole assembly with precast pier as recited in claim 14 , further comprising a door for accessing the interior cavity of the pipe.

20 . The radio and power pole assembly with precast pier as recited in claim 14 , further comprising a vent trap.
