Abstract

An imaging system including a scanner for scanning an object and creating an image of the same; and a transport mechanism mounted to the scanner for moving the scanner, wherein the transport mechanism includes a gross movement mechanism for transporting the scanner between scanning locations; and a fine movement mechanism for moving the scanner precisely, relative to the object being scanned, during scanning of the object; wherein the gross movement mechanism comprises at least one motorized wheel.

Claims (21)

1. Apparatus for imaging an object, the apparatus comprising:

a scanner for scanning an object and creating an image of the same, the scanner being configured to move on a surface, the scanner comprising a first end and a second end;

a camera;

a viewing screen;

at least one powered drive wheel configured to selectively move the scanner across the surface; and

at least one drive control configured to selectively control operation of the at least one powered drive wheel;

wherein the output of the camera is automatically displayed on the viewing screen when the scanner is moved across the surface using the at least one powered drive wheel, and further wherein the camera is disposed on the first end of the scanner so as to capture an image of the space ahead of the first end of the scanner during movement of the scanner across the surface using the at least one powered drive wheel; and

wherein the camera and the viewing screen are configured to automatically activate when the at least one drive control is used to move the scanner across the surface using the at least one powered drive wheel.

2. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the viewing screen is disposed on the second end of the scanner.

3. Apparatus according to claim 1 wherein the apparatus further comprises a second camera and a second viewing screen, wherein the output of the second camera may be displayed on the second viewing screen, and further wherein the camera and the second viewing screen are disposed on the first end of the scanner and the second camera and the viewing screen are disposed on the second end of the scanner.

4. A method for moving an imaging device on a surface, the method comprising:

providing a scanner for scanning an object and creating an image of the same, the scanner comprising a first end and a second end;

a camera;

a viewing screen;

at least one powered drive wheel configured to selectively move the scanner across the surface; and

at least one drive control configured to selectively control operation of the at least one powered drive wheel;

wherein the output of the camera is automatically displayed on the viewing screen when the scanner is moved across the surface using the at least one powered drive wheel, and further wherein the camera is disposed on the first end of the scanner so as to capture an image of the space ahead of the first end of the scanner during movement of the scanner across the surface using the at least one powered drive wheel; and

wherein the camera and the viewing screen are configured to automatically activate when the at least one drive control is used to move the scanner across the surface using the at least one powered drive wheel; and

using the at least one drive control to operate the at least one powered drive wheel so as to move the scanner across the surface while using the camera to capture an image of the space ahead of the first end of the scanner.

5. A method according to claim 4 wherein the viewing screen is disposed on the second end of the scanner.

6. A method according to claim 4 wherein the apparatus further comprises a second camera and a second viewing screen, wherein the output of the second camera may be displayed on the second viewing screen, and further wherein the camera and the second viewing screen are disposed on the first end of the scanner and the second camera and the viewing screen are disposed on the second end of the scanner.
