Abstract

An insertion instrument is configured to eject one or more of anchor bodies across an anatomical gap so as to approximate the gap. The insertion instrument can include a single cannula that retains the pair of anchor bodies in a stacked relationship, or a pair of adjacent cannulas that each retains respective anchor bodies. The insertion instrument can be actuated so as to eject the anchor bodies into respective target anatomical locations.

Claims (26)

1. A method of guiding a bone anchor to a target site, comprising:

inserting at least a portion of an anchor body into an anatomical location at the target site, wherein the target site is in a bone, and the anchor body comprises a strand of suture that defines at least two openings and includes an expandable portion, the anchor body including an actuation member that extends through the at least two openings;

applying an actuation force to the actuation member along a direction away from the expandable portion so as to draw the actuation member through the at least two openings and actuate the expandable portion from an initial configuration, in which the expandable portion has an initial maximum thickness, to an expanded configuration, in which the expandable portion has an expanded maximum thickness that is greater than the initial maximum thickness, such that the anchor body is fixed to the anatomical location in the bone;

after the applying step, inserting the actuation member through a cannula of a cannulated bone anchor; and

advancing the cannulated bone anchor along the actuation member until the cannulated bone anchor reaches the target site in the bone.

2. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising the step of creating an opening that extends at least into the anatomical location, the opening configured to receive the expandable portion when the expandable portion is in the initial configuration.

3. The method according to claim 2 , further comprising inserting a cannulated guide wire into the opening.

4. The method according to claim 3 , wherein the step of inserting the at least a portion of the anchor body into the anatomical location comprises inserting the expandable portion through the cannulated guide wire.

5. The method according to claim 4 , wherein the bone is a vertebral body, such that the anatomical location is defined by the vertebral body, the cannulated bone anchor is a cannulated bone screw, and the step of advancing the cannulated bone anchor along the actuation member comprises advancing the cannulated bone screw along the actuation member.

6. The method according to claim 4 , further comprising removing the cannulated guide wire from the opening prior to advancing the cannulated bone anchor along the actuation member.

7. The method according to claim 4 , wherein the expanded maximum thickness is greater than a diameter of the cannulated guide wire.

8. The method according to claim 4 , wherein at least a portion of the actuation member remains inside the cannulated guide wire during the applying step.

9. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the cannulated bone anchor is a cannulated bone screw.

10. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising driving the cannulated bone anchor into the target site of the bone.

11. The method according to claim 10 , further comprising, prior to the driving step:

inserting the cannulated bone anchor through soft tissue; and

moving the soft tissue together with the cannulated bone anchor to the bone.

12. The method according to claim 11 , wherein the driving step comprises:

driving the cannulated bone anchor into the bone until the cannulated bone anchor is adjacent the target site and the soft tissue is attached to the bone.

13. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the strand of suture defines an entirety of each of the expandable portion and the actuation member.

14. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising creating an opening that extends at least into the bone, the opening configured to receive the expandable portion when the expandable portion is in the initial configuration.

15. The method according to claim 14 , wherein the creating step further comprises drilling the opening into the bone with a drill.

16. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the expandable portion defines the at least two openings.

17. The method according to claim 1 , wherein:

the strand of suture defines an eyelet that extends from the expandable portion; and

the applying step further comprises causing the eyelet to be pulled through the anchor body and out of the anchor body.
