Freeform head mounted display
An optical apparatus for a near-eye display includes a microdisplay to emit image light and one or more field lenses positioned to receive the image light from the microdisplay. The one or more field lenses have a combined optical power to form a curved intermediate image. A freeform combiner, having an eyeward side and an external side, is positioned to receive the image light from the one or more field lenses and reflect the image light. A curved intermediate image is formed between the freeform combiner and the one or more field lenses.
1. An optical apparatus for a near-eye display, comprising:
a microdisplay to emit image light;
one or more field lenses positioned to receive the image light from the microdisplay, wherein the one or more field lenses have a combined optical power to form a curved intermediate image along a curved image plane of the one or more field lenses, and further wherein the one or more field lenses include:
a first field lens having a concave spherical surface positioned to receive image light from the microdisplay and a freeform surface opposite the concave spherical surface;
a second field lens having a convex spherical surface positioned to receive image light from the first field lens and a toroidal surface opposite the convex spherical surface that refracts image light towards a freeform Fresnel combiner; and
the freeform Fresnel combiner having an eyeward side and an external side, wherein the eyeward side is positioned to receive the image light from the one or more field lenses and reflects the image light, and wherein the curved image plane is disposed between the freeform Fresnel combiner and the one or more field lenses.
2. The optical apparatus of claim 1 ,
wherein the first field lens is optically disposed between the second field lens and the microdisplay, and the second field lens is optically disposed between the first field lens and the freeform Fresnel combiner.
3. The optical apparatus of claim 2 , wherein a first vertex of the first field lens and a second vertex of the second field lens are aligned to optically center the one or more field lenses.
4. The optical apparatus of claim 3 , wherein a first abbe number of the first field lens is less than a second abbe number of the second field lens.
5. The optical apparatus of claim 4 , wherein the second abbe number is at least two times larger than the first abbe number.
6. The optical apparatus of claim 3 , wherein the freeform surface of the first field lens is described by a polynomial with less than a 4th order term.
7. The optical apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the freeform Fresnel combiner is a reflective Fresnel combiner, and further wherein the external side of the freeform Fresnel combiner is planar.
8. The optical apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the curved intermediate image is in-focus in the curved image plane, and wherein the curved image plane is disposed in free space between the freeform Fresnel combiner and the one or more field lenses where rays of the image light intersect.
