Abstract

A payload stabilizer and methods for stabilizing a payload suitable for use with video camera payloads. The stabilizer has a feedback system providing supplemental torques to the payload through a gimbal.

Claims (47)

1. A method of stabilizing a payload comprising:

providing a payload support apparatus having a gimbal, the gimbal having a first gimbal axis and a second gimbal axis, wherein the first gimbal axis is perpendicular to the second gimbal axis, the payload support apparatus having a rotation measuring device, a first torque generator and a second torque generator;

receiving angle θ from the rotation measuring device;

calculating cosine θ and sine θ;

receiving a selected supplemental roll torque;

receiving a selected supplemental tilt torque;

adding the product of the supplemental tilt torque and cosine θ to the product of the supplemental tilt torque and sine θ to obtain a second gimbal axis torque;

subtracting the product of the supplemental first torque and sine θ to the product of the supplemental first torque and cosine θ to obtain a first gimbal axis torque;

causing a first torque generator to generate the first gimbal axis torque; and

causing a second torque generator to generate the second gimbal axis torque.

2. An apparatus for stabilizing a payload comprising:

a gimbal having two or more mutually perpendicular rotational axes;

a motor bracket arm fixedly attached to a yoke of the gimbal;

a first motor and a second motor attached to the motor bracket arm, the first motor oriented at 90 degrees to the second motor;

a pulley system functionally connected to the first motor, the second motor and the gimbal to rotationally drive the gimbal about two of the two or more mutually perpendicular axes;

a plurality of angular rate sensors configured to sense motion about at least two of the two or more mutually perpendicular rotational axes;

a plurality of accelerometers aligned along mutually perpendicular axes to measure steady state angular orientation of the payload with respect to gravity.

3. The apparatus of claim 2 further comprising:

a gimbal support handle;

the gimbal comprising:

a gimbal yoke;

a pan bearing inner race; and

a pan bearing outer race;

the gimbal yoke rotationally connected to the gimbal support handle about a roll axis;

a gimbal yoke driven pulley configured to rotationally drive the gimbal yoke with respect to the gimbal handle;

the pan bearing inner race rotationally connected to the pan bearing outer race about a pan axis, wherein the pan axis is perpendicular to the roll axis;

the gimbal yoke rotationally connected to the pan bearing outer race about a tilt axis, wherein the tilt axis, roll axis and pan axis are mutually perpendicular;

a gimbal trunnion driven pulley configured to drive the pan bearing outer race with respect to the gimbal yoke;

a motor bracket arm fixedly attached to the gimbal yoke;

a gimbal yoke axis motor and pulley attached to the motor bracket arm first end and configured to rotate the yoke with respect to the handle by engagement to the gimbal yoke driven pulley;

a gimbal trunnion axis motor and pulley attached to the motor bracket arm second end and configured to rotate the outer race with respect to the gimbal yoke by engagement to the gimbal trunnion driven pulley;

a reference ring attached to the pan bearing inner race;

a pan counter sensor attached to the pan bearing outer race and configured to sense signals from the reference ring.

4. The apparatus of claim 3 wherein the reference ring is locked an orientation of the payload.

5. The apparatus of claim 3 wherein the reference ring is magnetic and the pan counter sensor senses magnetic signals.

6. The apparatus of claim 3 wherein the pan counter is mechanical and the reference ring is configured to allow the pan counter to register a degree of rotation of the reference ring.

7. The apparatus of claim 3 wherein the reference ring provides optical or electrostatic signals representing a degree of rotation of the reference ring; and

the pan counter senses the respective optical or electrostatic signals.

8. The apparatus of claim 3 wherein the reference ring is locked to an orientation of the payload.

9. The apparatus of claim 2 further comprising a third motor configured to act parallel to a pan axis of the gimbal and function as the pan counter.

10. The apparatus of claim 2 further comprising:

an electronic control unit; and

an actuation unit;

the electronic control unit configured to:

accept signals from the plurality of angular rate sensors and plurality of accelerometers;

adjust and encode the signals; and

transmit the adjusted signals to the actuation unit.
