Abstract

Injection devices for delivering pharmaceutical compositions into the eye are described. Some devices include a resistance component for controllably deploying an injection needle through the eye wall. The resistance component may be disposed on the injector device, or on a portion of the injection device housing, or on a drug reservoir. Some devices may be removably attached to a drug reservoir, for example, through a luer connector. Other devices may comprise internal luer seal for securely connecting a drug conduit of the device to the luer cavity of a drug reservoir. Yet other devices may comprise a priming-enabling element to facilitate the drug priming of a shielded needle. Related methods and systems comprising the devices are also described.

Claims (23)

1. A needle assembly, comprising:

a needle hub comprising a tubular body and comprising an input port on its proximal end for removable connection to an injector having a drug reservoir, and a distal stop surface;

a needle comprising a proximal portion and a distal portion, the proximal portion of the needle housed within the tubular body of the needle hub, and a distal end of the needle extending distally beyond the needle hub;

a slidable shield comprising a body and a sidewall, the slidable shield operatively coupled to the needle hub and having a fixed axial dimension, the slidable shield configured for axial movement along the needle hub between the input port and the distal stop surface and configured such that the needle is completely circumscribed by the shield and the tubular body of the needle hub when the shield is in a first, distal position with respect to the needle hub, and the distal portion of the needle extends distally beyond the shield when the shield is in a second, proximal position with respect to the needle hub; and

a lever attached to the tubular body of the needle hub at an attachment point at a proximal end of the lever, the lever configured to reversibly prevent axial movement of the slidable shield and to maintain the shield in the first, distal position with respect to the needle hub upon twisting the slidable shield around its longitudinal axis, thereby locking the lever to a locking feature, wherein the attachment point at the proximal end of the lever with respect to the tubular body of the needle hub is outside of the body of the slidable shield in both a locked configuration and an unlocked configuration.

2. The needle assembly of claim 1 , wherein the lever is fixedly attached to the needle hub.

3. The needle assembly of claim 1 , further comprising an internal resistance component.

4. The needle assembly of claim 1 , further comprising a spring biased to facilitate movement of the slidable shield from the second, proximal position to the first, distal position.

5. The needle assembly of claim 1 , further comprising an atraumatic ocular contact surface configured to be atraumatic to the conjunctiva or corneal surfaces located at the distal end of the slidable shield.

6. A drug delivery system comprising the needle injector of claim 1 , and a drug reservoir configured to attach to the needle injector.

7. A needle assembly, comprising:

a needle hub comprising a tubular body;

a needle comprising a proximal portion and a distal portion, the proximal portion of the needle housed within the tubular body of the needle hub, and a distal end of the needle extending distally beyond the needle hub;

a slidable shield comprising a proximal end and a distal end, the slidable shield operatively coupled to the needle hub, the slidable shield having a fixed axial dimension and configured for axial movement along the needle hub between an input port and a stop surface and configured such that the needle is completely circumscribed by the slidable shield and the tubular body of the needle hub when the slidable shield is in a first, distal position with respect to the needle hub, and the distal portion of the needle extends distally beyond the slidable shield when the slidable shield is in a second, proximal position with respect to the needle hub, wherein the proximal end of the slidable shield remains distal to the input port of the needle hub in both the first, distal position and the second, proximal position with respect to the input port of the needle hub;

a patient contact surface, the patient contact surface comprising a perimeter and connected to the distal end of the slidable shield; and

a lever attached to the needle hub at a proximal end of the lever, the lever axially-oriented and comprising a distal portion extending distally and parallel to a longitudinal axis of the needle assembly, the lever configured to prevent axial movement of the slidable shield and to maintain the shield in the first, distal position with respect to the needle hub upon twisting the slidable shield around its longitudinal axis, thereby locking a distal tip of the lever to a locking feature on the slidable shield.

8. The needle assembly of claim 7 , wherein the lever is fixedly attached to the needle hub.

9. The needle assembly of claim 7 , wherein the locking feature comprises a slot.

10. The needle assembly of claim 7 , wherein the locking feature comprises a groove.

11. The needle assembly of claim 7 , wherein the locking feature comprises an aperture.

12. The needle assembly of claim 7 , further comprising an internal resistance component.

13. The needle assembly of claim 7 , further comprising a spring biased to facilitate movement of the slidable shield from the second, proximal position to the first, distal position.

14. A drug delivery system comprising the needle injector of claim 7 , and a drug reservoir configured to attach to the needle injector.
