Abstract

A resuscitation system for use in resuscitation of cardiac arrest victims includes a communications module for initiating a communication with an emergency medical service.

Claims (39)

1 . A system for providing resuscitative treatment to a victim, the system comprising:

a medical device comprising a transmitter and a receiver; and

a mobile communications device configured to:

capture victim treatment information,

transmit the victim treatment information to the medical device via a bi-directional communications link with the medical device, and

control operations of the medical device via the bi-directional communications link based at least in part on the victim treatment information.

2 . The system of claim 1 wherein the victim treatment information comprises information input to the mobile communications device by a caregiver.

3 . The system of claim 2 wherein the information input to the mobile communications device comprises an electronic patient care record.

4 . The system of claim 3 wherein the electronic patient care record comprises a notification of a medical treatment provided to the victim.

5 . The system of claim 1 wherein the mobile communications device is configured to capture the victim treatment information in real time, transmit the victim treatment information in real time, and control the operations of the medical device in real time.

6 . The system of claim 1 wherein the mobile communications device is configured to store the victim treatment information.

7 . The system of claim 1 wherein the operations of the medical device comprise one or more of a type of treatment provided to the victim, an intensity of treatment provided to the victim, a speed of treatment provided to the victim, and a coordination of treatment provided to the victim.

8 . The system of claim 1 wherein the medical device comprises an automated external defibrillator (AED).

9 . The system of claim 1 comprising additional medical devices, wherein the mobile communications device is communicatively coupled to the additional medical devices.

10 . The system of claim 9 wherein the additional medical devices comprise one or more of a ventilation device and a chest compression device.

11 . The system of claim 1 wherein the medical device is configured to support one or more of short range wireless communications and long range cellular wireless communications.

12 . The system of claim 1 wherein the mobile communications device is configured to support one or more of short range wireless communications and long range cellular wireless communications.

13 . The system of claim 1 wherein the mobile communications device comprises a tablet computing device or a cellular phone.

14 . The system of claim 1 wherein the mobile communications device is communicatively coupled to a remote medical services system and configured to transmit the victim treatment information to the remote medical services system.

15 . The system of claim 1 wherein the medical device is communicatively coupled to a remote medical services system and configured to transmit the victim treatment information to the remote medical services system.

16 . The system of claim 1 comprising one or more physiological sensors associated with the victim and communicatively coupled to the mobile communications device, wherein the victim treatment information comprises one or more physiological parameters sensed by the one or more physiological sensors.

17 . The system of claim 16 wherein the one or more physiological parameters comprise one or more of ventilation parameters, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) parameters, electrocardiogram (ECG) parameters, blood pressure, pulse, chest compression parameters, circulatory flow parameters, perfusion parameters, cardiac output measure, heart rate measure, oxygen saturation, heart imaging, and impedance cardiography.

18 . The system of claim 16 wherein the mobile communications device is configured to control the operations of the medical device based on the one or more physiological parameters.

19 . A method of providing resuscitative treatment to a victim, the method comprising:

capturing victim treatment information at a mobile communications device communicatively coupled to a medical device via a bi-directional communications link;

transmitting the victim treatment information to the medical device via the bi-directional communications link; and

controlling operations of the medical device, via the bi-directional communications link, based at least in part on the victim treatment information.

20 . The method of claim 19 wherein the capturing victim treatment information comprises capturing information input to the mobile communications device by a caregiver.

21 . The method of claim 20 wherein the information input to the mobile communications device comprises an electronic patient care record.

22 . The method of claim 21 wherein the electronic patient care record comprises a notification of a medical treatment provided to the victim.

23 . The method of claim 19 comprising capturing the victim treatment information in real time, transmitting the victim treatment information in real time, and controlling the operations of the medical device in real time.

24 . The method of claim 19 wherein the operations of the medical device comprise one or more of a type of treatment provided to the victim, an intensity of treatment provided to the victim, a speed of treatment provided to the victim, and a coordination of treatment provided to the victim.

25 . The method of claim 19 wherein the medical device comprises an automated external defibrillator (AED).

26 . The method of claim 19 wherein the mobile communications device comprises a tablet computing device or a cellular phone.

27 . The method of claim 19 wherein the mobile communications device is communicatively coupled to a remote medical services system and comprising transmitting the victim treatment information to the remote medical services system.

28 . The method of claim 19 wherein the medical device is communicatively coupled to a remote medical services system and comprising transmitting the victim treatment information to the remote medical services system.

29 . The method of claim 19 wherein capturing the victim treatment information comprises receiving, from one or more physiological sensors, associated with the victim and communicatively coupled to the mobile communications device, one or more physiological parameters sensed by the one or more physiological sensors.

30 . The method of claim 29 wherein the one or more physiological parameters comprise one or more of ventilation parameters, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) parameters, electrocardiogram (ECG) parameters, blood pressure, pulse, chest compression parameters, circulatory flow parameters, perfusion parameters, cardiac output measure, heart rate measure, oxygen saturation, heart imaging, and impedance cardiography.

31 . The method of claim 29 comprising controlling the operations of the medical device based on the one or more physiological parameters.
