Abstract

Systems and methods are provided for improving overall vision in patients suffering from a loss of vision in a portion of the retina (e.g., loss of central vision) by providing an enhanced toric lens which redirects and/or focuses light incident on the eye at oblique angles onto a peripheral retinal location. The intraocular lens can include a redirection element (e.g., a prism, a diffractive element, or an optical component with a decentered GRIN profile) configured to direct incident light along a deflected optical axis and to focus an image at a location on the peripheral retina. Optical properties of the intraocular lens can be configured to improve or reduce peripheral errors at the location on the peripheral retina. One or more surfaces of the intraocular lens can be a toric surface, a higher order aspheric surface, an aspheric Zernike surface or a Biconic Zernike.

Claims (18)

1. An optic configured to improve vision for a patient's eye, the optic comprising:

a surface configured to improve image quality of an image produced by light incident on the patient's eye at an oblique angle with respect to an optical axis intersecting the eye and focused at a peripheral retinal location disposed at a distance from the fovea,

wherein the image quality is improved by reducing oblique astigmatism at the peripheral retinal location,

wherein a modulation transfer function (MTF) of the optic at one or more spatial frequencies for light incident on the optic and forming an image at the peripheral retinal location at an eccentricity having a value between about 1 degree and about 25 degrees is greater than a modulation transfer function (MTF) of the optic at one or more spatial frequencies for light incident on the optic and forming an image at the peripheral retinal location at an eccentricity having a value between 0 degrees and less than 1 degree.

2. The optic of claim 1 , wherein the image quality is improved by reducing coma at the peripheral retinal location.

3. The optic of claim 1 configured to provide astigmatic correction of at least 0.5 Diopter at the peripheral retinal location.

4. The optic of claim 1 configured to provide at least 0.1 μm of coma correction at the peripheral retinal location for a 6 mm pupil.

5. The optic of claim 1 , wherein the oblique angle is between about 1 degree and about 25 degrees.

6. The optic of claim 1 , wherein the surface is a Zernike surface having a radius of curvature between about 5 mm and about 25 mm.

7. The optic of claim 6 , wherein the Zernike surface has a conic constant between about 0 and about −100.

8. The optic of claim 6 , wherein the Zernike surface has an astigmatic coefficient between about 0 μm and about 4 μm.

9. The optic of claim 6 , wherein the Zernike surface has a coma coefficient between about 0 μm and about 2 μm.

10. The optic of claim 1 , wherein the surface has a spherical aberration coefficient with a value between 0 μm and 4 μm when measured in air with a 3 mm aperture using an optical bench aberrometer.

11. The optic of claim 1 , further comprising a spherical surface opposite the surface.

12. The optic of claim 11 , wherein the spherical surface comprises one or more diffractive elements.

13. The optic of claim 1 , configured to be implanted in the eye of a patient.

14. The optic of claim 1 , further comprising prismatic features.

15. The optic of claim 1 , wherein the optic has a modulation transfer function (MTF) of at least 0.3 for a spatial frequency of 30 cycles/mm for both the tangential and the sagittal foci at the peripheral retinal location.
