Abstract

Methods and apparatus relating to techniques to provide dynamic pixel density adjustment for display panels not driven by backlight are described. In an embodiment, logic causes a first plurality of pixels of a display panel to be turned off in response to an indication that a charge level of a power supply, coupled to supply electrical power to the display panel, has dropped below a threshold level. The display panel is not backlight drive (such as an OLED or QDOT display panels. Other embodiments are also disclosed and claimed.

Claims (31)

1. An apparatus comprising:

logic, at least a portion of which is in hardware, to cause a first plurality of pixels of a display panel to be turned off in response to an indication that a charge level of a power supply, coupled to supply electrical power to the display panel, has dropped below a threshold level,

wherein the display panel is not backlight driven, wherein the logic is to cause assignment of a lower resolution framebuffer for the first plurality of pixels in response to result of a capability query from the display panel, wherein the result of the capability query is to indicate whether the display panel is capable of causing the first plurality of pixels of the display panel to turn off at the display panel.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the display panel is to comprise an Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) display panel or a Quantum Dot Technology (QDOT) display panel.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the first plurality of pixels is to comprise a subset of pixels of the display panel in both horizontal and vertical axis of the display panel.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the logic is to cause replacement of the first plurality of pixels with a second plurality of pixels of the display panel after expiration of a time period.

5. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the logic is to cause the first plurality of pixels of the display panel to be turned on in response to an indication that the charge level of the power supply has reached a level that is equal to or above the threshold level.

6. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the indication is to comprise a voltage level of the power supply.

7. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the power supply is to comprise at least one battery.

8. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a processor, coupled to the logic, wherein the processor is to comprise a Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) having one or more graphics processing cores.

9. The apparatus of claim 1 , further comprising a processor, coupled to the logic, wherein the processor is to comprise one or more processor cores.

10. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein one or more of a processor, the logic, and memory are on a single integrated circuit die.

11. The apparatus of claim 1 , wherein the result of the capability query is to indicate whether a processor, coupled to the display panel, is capable of causing the first plurality of pixels to turn off.

12. A method comprising:

causing a first plurality of pixels of a display panel to be turned off in response to an indication that a charge level of a power supply, coupled to supply electrical power to the display panel, has dropped below a threshold level,

wherein the display panel is not backlight driven, wherein a lower resolution framebuffer is assigned to the first plurality of pixels in response to result of a capability query from the display panel, wherein the result of the capability query indicates whether the display panel is capable of causing the first plurality of pixels of the display panel to turn off at the display panel.

13. The method of claim 12 , wherein the display panel comprises an Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) display panel or a Quantum Dot Technology (QDOT) display panel.

14. The method of claim 12 , wherein the first plurality of pixels comprises a subset of pixels of the display panel in both horizontal and vertical axis of the display panel.

15. The method of claim 12 , further comprising causing replacement of the first plurality of pixels with a second plurality of pixels of the display panel after expiration of a time period.

16. The method of claim 12 , further comprising causing the first plurality of pixels of the display panel to be turned on in response to an indication that the charge level of the power supply has reached a level that is equal to or above the threshold level.

17. One or more non-transitory computer-readable medium comprising one or more instructions that when executed on at least one processor configure the at least one processor to perform one or more operations to:

causing a first plurality of pixels of a display panel to be turned off in response to an indication that a charge level of a power supply, coupled to supply electrical power to the display panel, has dropped below a threshold level,

wherein the display panel is not backlight driven, wherein a lower resolution framebuffer is to be assigned to the first plurality of pixels in response to result of a capability query from the display panel, wherein the result of the capability query is to indicate whether the display panel is capable of causing the first plurality of pixels of the display panel to turn off at the display panel.

18. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 17 , wherein the display panel comprises an Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) display panel or a Quantum Dot Technology (QDOT) display panel.

19. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 17 , wherein the first plurality of pixels comprises a subset of pixels of the display panel in both horizontal and vertical axis of the display panel.

The one or more non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 17 , further comprising one or more instructions that when executed on the at least one processor configure the at least one processor to perform one or more operations to cause replacement of the first plurality of pixels with a second plurality of pixels of the display panel after expiration of a time period.

The one or more non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 17 , further comprising one or more instructions that when executed on the at least one processor configure the at least one processor to perform one or more operations to cause the first plurality of pixels of the display panel to be turned on in response to an indication that the charge level of the power supply has reached a level that is equal to or above the threshold level.

22. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 17 , wherein the indication comprises a voltage level of the power supply.

23. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 17 , wherein the power supply comprises at least one battery.

24. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 17 , wherein the processor comprises a Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) having one or more graphics processing cores.

25. The one or more non-transitory computer-readable medium of claim 17 , wherein the processor comprises one or more processor cores.
