Abstract

The invention relates to nucleic acids, proteins and methods for modulating the cellulose content of plants.

Claims (11)

1. A plant comprising a heterologous nucleic acid comprising a tissue specific promoter operably linked to a nucleic acid segment encoding a WRKY11 plant transcription factor having at least 95% sequence identity to SEQ ID NO:19, and wherein the plant has at least 4% increased levels of secondary wall cellulose compared to a wild type plant of the same species without the heterologous nucleic acid.

2. The plant of claim 1 , wherein the plant is a softwood plant or hardwood plant.

3. The plant of claim 1 , wherein the plant is a poplar species, pine species, or eucalyptus species plant.

4. The plant of claim 1 , wherein the promoter is a xylem-specific promoter.

5. The plant of claim 1 , wherein the heterologous nucleic acid expresses increased levels of the WRKY11 plant transcription factor in the plant compared to a corresponding transcription factor gene naturally present in a wild type plant of the same species.

6. The plant of claim 1 , wherein the plant is a transgenic plant, a genetically modified plant, or a plant selectively bred to comprise the heterologous nucleic acid.

7. A seed from the plant of claim 1 .

A plant biomass comprising secondary wall cellulose isolated from a plant comprising a heterologous nucleic acid comprising a tissue specific promoter segment operably linked to a nucleic acid segment encoding a WRKY11 plant transcription factor, wherein the WRKY11 has at least 95% sequence identity to SEQ ID NO:19.

A method of increasing cellulose content in a plant comprising expressing WRKY11 in the plant from a heterologous nucleic acid comprising a heterologous tissue specific promoter segment operably linked to a nucleic acid segment encoding the transcription factor, wherein the WRKY11 has at least 95% sequence identity to SEQ ID NO:19, and wherein the plant has at least 4% increased levels of secondary wall cellulose compared to a wild type plant of the same species without the heterologous nucleic acid.

A plant comprising a heterologous nucleic acid comprising a secondary wall cellulose synthase (CESA) promoter operably linked to a nucleic acid segment encoding a WRKY11 plant transcription factor having at least 95% sequence identity to SEQ NO:19, and wherein the plant has at least 4% increased levels of secondary wall cellulose compared to a wild type plant of the same species without the heterologous nucleic acid.

11. The plant of claim 10 , wherein the promoter is a secondary wall cellulose synthase 4 (CESA4) promoter, or a secondary wall cellulose synthase 7 (CESA7) promoter operably linked to a nucleic acid segment encoding the WRKY11 plant transcription factor.
