Abstract

A connected compact battery charger for charging a battery comprising: a microprocessor; a set of terminals operatively coupled to said microprocessor and configured to electrically couple with an automotive battery; and an internal lithium ion battery, wherein the internal lithium ion battery is a lithium ion battery, wherein a single-ended primary-inductor converter may be configured to receive an input voltage of 5 VDC to 20 VDC and output a predetermined DC charge voltage to said internal lithium ion battery.

Claims (49)

1. A connected compact battery booster comprising:

a processor;

a wireless transceiver operatively coupled to the processor to wirelessly communicate data between the processor and a portable electronic device;

an internal lithium ion battery to supply a charging current to charge an external battery and a starting current to jump start an engine electrically coupled with the external battery, wherein the starting current is greater than the charging current;

a display device operatively coupled to the processor to display a state of charge of said internal lithium ion battery;

a direct current (DC) output port to output the starting current, wherein the DC output port is configured to electrically couple with the external battery via a set of conductors; and

a power management circuit operatively coupled to the processor and the internal lithium ion battery,

wherein the processor is configured to control the power management circuit to provide the charging current from the internal lithium ion battery to pre-charge the external battery before the starting current in response to a control command from the portable electronic device via the wireless transceiver, and

wherein the processor is configured to detect whether or not the external battery is connected electrically to the DC output port and, if the external battery is not detected, to control the power management circuit to provide the starting current from the internal lithium ion battery to the DC output port in response to a manual override command from the portable electronic device via the wireless transceiver.

2. The connected compact battery booster of claim 1 , wherein the portable electronic device is a smart phone or a tablet computer.

3. The connected compact battery booster of claim 1 , wherein the wireless transceiver is configured to communicate via Bluetooth.

4. The connected compact battery booster of claim 1 , wherein the wireless transceiver is configured to communicate via near-field communication (NFC).

5. The connected compact battery booster of claim 1 , wherein the wireless transceiver is configured to communicate via Wi-Fi.

6. The connected compact battery booster of claim 1 , wherein the wireless transceiver is configured to communicate via 2G, 3G, 4G, Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA), or Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) via an internal cellular modem.

7. The connected compact battery booster of claim 1 , wherein the wireless transceiver is configured to communicate with the portable electronic device over the Internet.

8. The connected compact battery booster of claim 1 , wherein the wireless transceiver is configured to communicate the state of charge of said internal lithium ion battery to the portable electronic device.

The connected compact battery booster of claim 1 , wherein the processor is configured to detect a drop in current across the set of conductors and the power management circuit is configured to provide the starting current in response to the processor detecting the drop in current across the set of conductors.

10. The connected compact battery booster of claim 1 , further comprising a single-ended primary-inductor converter to receive a variable input voltage between 5 volts DC and 20 volts DC and to output a predetermined charge voltage to said internal lithium ion battery.

11. The connected compact battery booster of claim 10 , wherein the variable input voltage is received via a universal serial bus (USB) port.

12. The connected compact battery booster of claim 1 , further comprising a universal serial bus (USB) port to output a first charging current.

13. The connected compact battery booster of claim 12 , further comprising a second USB port to output a second charging current that is different from the first charging current.

14. The connected compact battery booster of claim 13 , wherein each of the first current and the second current are less than 3.0 amperes.

15. The connected compact battery booster of claim 12 , further comprising an internal data storage device to store digital media files accessible via the USB port.

16. The connected compact battery booster of claim 1 , wherein the internal lithium ion battery is rated between 3,000 mAh and 20,000 mAh.

17. The connected compact battery booster of claim 1 , wherein the display device is a liquid crystal display (LCD) to display a state of charge of said internal lithium ion battery or said external battery as a numerical value.

18. The connected compact battery booster of claim 1 , wherein the wireless transceiver is configured to communicate an operational status to the portable electronic device.

19. The connected compact battery booster of claim 18 , wherein the operational status includes at least one of a charge percentage of said internal lithium ion battery or a temperature condition of said internal lithium ion battery.

20. The connected compact battery booster of claim 1 , wherein the processor, the wireless transceiver, the internal lithium ion battery, and the power management circuit share a single housing.

21. The connected compact battery booster of claim 20 , wherein the display device and the DC output port are positioned at an outer surface of the single housing.

22. The connected compact battery booster of claim 1 , wherein the set of conductors include battery cables having battery clamps.

23. The connected compact battery booster of claim 1 , wherein the set of conductors are configured to electrically couple with the DC output port using an EC5 connector.

24. A connected compact battery booster comprising:

a processor;

a wireless transceiver operatively coupled to the processor to facilitate wireless communication between the processor and a portable electronic device;

an internal lithium ion battery to supply a charging current to charge an external battery and a starting current to jump start an engine electrically coupled with the external battery, wherein the starting current is greater than the charging current;

an induction coil configured to facilitate inductive charging;

a display device operatively coupled to the processor to display a state of charge of said internal lithium ion battery, wherein the processor is configured to communicate the state of charge of said internal lithium ion battery to the portable electronic device via the wireless transceiver;

a direct current (DC) output to output the starting current, wherein the DC output is configured to couple electrically with the external battery via a set of conductors;

a power management circuit operatively coupled to the processor and the internal lithium ion battery, the power management circuit is configured to provide the charging current or the starting current from the internal lithium ion battery; and

a housing, wherein the processor, the wireless transceiver, the internal lithium ion battery, the induction coil, and the power management circuit are positioned in or on the housing.

25. The connected compact battery booster of claim 24 , wherein the induction coil is configured to facilitate inductive charging of the internal lithium ion battery.

26. A connected compact battery booster comprising:

a processor;

a wireless transceiver operatively coupled to the processor to wirelessly communicate data between the processor and a portable electronic device;

an internal lithium ion battery to supply a starting current to jump start an engine electrically coupled with an external battery;

a display device operatively coupled to the processor to display a state of charge of said internal lithium ion battery;

a direct current (DC) output port to output the starting current, wherein the DC output port is configured to electrically couple with the external battery via a set of conductors; and

a power management circuit operatively coupled to the processor and the internal lithium ion battery,

wherein the processor is configured to detect whether or not the external battery is connected electrically to the DC output port and, if the external battery is not detected, to control the power management circuit to provide the starting current from the internal lithium ion battery to the DC output port in response to a manual override command from the portable electronic device via the wireless transceiver.
