Abstract

A catheter including a monitoring body and a pair of markers disposed on the monitoring body, each marker of the pair of markers encircling the monitoring body, wherein the pair of markers are configured to indicate, through their appearance from a given point of view, an orientation of the monitoring body.

Claims (30)

1. A catheter comprising:

a monitoring body having an axis extending along a length of the monitoring body;

an imaging sensor disposed at a distal end of the monitoring body; and

a pair of elliptical hoops fixed on the monitoring body and offset from one another, each of the elliptical hoops encircling the monitoring body, wherein a first elliptical hoop of the pair is disposed in a first plane having an angle about 45 degrees to the axis and a second elliptical hoop of the pair is disposed in a second plane having an angle about 45 degrees to the axis and rotated 90 degrees, on the axis, from the first plane such that the pair of elliptical hoops indicate, through their combined appearance with the distal end from a given point of view, an orientation and exact rotational position of the imaging sensor over 360 degrees of rotation of the monitoring body about the axis.

2. The catheter of claim 1 , further comprising a lens marker disposed adjacent to the imaging sensor between the imaging sensor and the distal end of the monitoring body.

3. The catheter of claim 1 , further comprising a lens marker disposed adjacent to the imaging sensor, wherein one of the pair of elliptical hoops is the lens marker.

4. The catheter of claim 1 , further comprising:

an outer sheath;

an inner sheath disposed within the outer sheath, the inner sheath enclosing the monitoring body; and

a guidewire.

5. The catheter of claim 4 , further comprising:

a distal tip marker disposed at a distal end of the inner sheath,

wherein the guidewire is disposed along a portion of a length of the inner sheath, between the inner sheath and the outer sheath, enters the inner sheath at the distal end of the inner sheath and passes through the distal tip marker.

6. The catheter of claim 1 , wherein the pair of elliptical hoops are radio-opaque, and the monitoring body is radio-transparent.

7. The catheter of claim 1 , wherein the pair of elliptical hoops are configured to appear in a two-dimension projection, in combination with the with the distal end, as a unique pattern corresponding to the orientation and the exact rotational position of the imaging sensor.

8. The catheter of claim 1 , further comprising an inertial measurement unit comprising a plurality of orthogonal accelerometers and a plurality of orthogonal gyroscopes and disposed on the monitoring body and configured to record orientation data relative to a datum point.

9. The catheter of claim 1 , further comprising an inertial measurement unit comprising a plurality of orthogonal accelerometers and a plurality of orthogonal gyroscopes and disposed on the monitoring body and configured to record linear and rotational data relative to a datum point.

10. The catheter of claim 1 , further comprising an inertial measurement unit disposed on the monitoring body and comprising at least one of a gyroscope, an accelerometer, and a magnetometer.

11. A catheter comprising:

an outer sheath;

an inner sheath disposed within the outer sheath;

a guidewire;

a monitoring body having an axis disposed along a length of the monitoring body and disposed within the inner sheath;

an imaging sensor disposed at a distal end of the monitoring body; and

a pair of radio-opaque elliptical hoops fixed on the monitoring body and offset from one another, each radio-opaque elliptical hoop of the pair of radio-opaque elliptical hoops encircling the monitoring body, wherein a first elliptical hoop of the pair is disposed in a first plane having an angle about 45 degrees to the axis and a second elliptical hoop of the pair is disposed in a second plane having an angle about 45 degrees to the axis and rotated 90 degrees, on the axis, from the first plane such that the pair of radio-opaque elliptical hoops indicate, through their combined appearance with the distal end in a two-dimensional projection, an orientation of the imaging sensor over 360 degrees of rotation of the monitoring body about the axis.

12. The catheter of claim 11 , further comprising a lens marker disposed adjacent to the imaging sensor between the imaging sensor and the distal end of the monitoring body.

13. The catheter of claim 11 , wherein the first radio-opaque elliptical hoop of the pair of radio-opaque elliptical hoops is a lens marker disposed adjacent to the imaging sensor.

14. The catheter of claim 11 , further comprising an inertial measurement unit comprising a plurality of orthogonal accelerometers and a plurality of orthogonal gyroscopes and disposed on the monitoring body and configured to record orientation data relative to a datum point.

15. The catheter of claim 11 , further comprising an inertial measurement unit comprising a plurality of orthogonal accelerometers and a plurality of orthogonal gyroscopes and disposed on the monitoring body and configured to record linear and rotational data relative to a datum point.

16. The catheter of claim 11 , further comprising an inertial measurement unit disposed on the monitoring body and comprising at least one of a gyroscope, an accelerometer, and a magnetometer.
