Abstract

A method includes receiving at least one current network condition factor (NCF), each current NCF indicating a level of congestion of a corresponding network. The method determines that there is an autonomous report to be transmitted and in response determines a policy entry of a policy used for autonomous reporting based on matching values of one or more input parameters related to the autonomous report to values of one or more input parameters of the policy entry. A reference NCF for a first network is determined from the corresponding policy entry. The method then determines whether to request to transmit the autonomous report on the first network based on a comparison of the reference NCF for the first network and the current NCF of the first network.

Claims (42)

1. A method comprising:

receiving, at a device, at least one current network condition factor (NCF), a respective one of the at least one current NCF indicating a level of congestion of a corresponding network;

determining, at the device, that there is an autonomous report to be transmitted;

receiving, at the device, a policy used for autonomous reporting by the device, the policy having a plurality of entries relating a plurality of input parameters concerning a respective autonomous report to treatment for transmission of the respective autonomous report;

in response to determining that there is an autonomous report to transmit at the device, determining, at the device, a policy entry of the policy used for autonomous reporting based on matching values of one or more input parameters related to the autonomous report to values of one or more input parameters of the policy entry;

determining, at the device, a reference NCF for a first network, the reference NCF for the first network corresponding to the policy entry; and

requesting, at the device, to transmit the autonomous report on the first network based on a comparison of the reference NCF for the first network and the current NCF of the first network.

2. The method of claim 1 , wherein the treatment for transmission of the policy entry comprises:

a plurality of reference NCFs for a corresponding plurality of networks.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein the treatment for transmission of the policy entry further comprises:

an adjusted change of periodicity indicating a time shift for the autonomous report.

4. The method of claim 3 , further comprising:

modifying the adjusted change of periodicity based on patterns of periodic autonomous reporting and a number of devices involved in the reporting.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the input parameters of the policy entry comprise:

a power level required of the device to send a transmission on a corresponding network, a time sensitivity of the autonomous report, a reliability required of the autonomous report, and a size of data of the autonomous report.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the first network is a Long Term Evolution (LTE) network, a WiFi network, or a Long Range Wide Area (LoRA) network.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein the requesting comprises:

requesting to transmit the autonomous report when the reference NCF of the first network is greater than or equal to the current NCF of the first network; and

abstaining from requesting to transmit the autonomous report for a time interval when the reference NCF of the first network is less than the current NCF of the first network.

8. The method of claim 1 further comprising transmitting the autonomous report on the first network.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein the current NCF is a function of a current network load of the corresponding network, a number of devices on a cell to which the device is connected, and a reporting pattern of recent Internet of Things (IoT) requests for network resources.

10. An apparatus comprising:

an interface to one or more networks;

a processor configured to

receive via the interface to at least one current network condition factor (NCF), a respective one of at least one current NCF indicating a level of congestion of a corresponding network;

determine that there is an autonomous report to be transmitted;

receive a policy used for autonomous reporting, the policy having a plurality of entries relating a plurality of input parameters concerning a respective autonomous report to treatment for transmission of the respective autonomous report;

in response to determining that there is an autonomous report to transmit, determine a policy entry of the policy used for autonomous reporting based on matching values of one or more input parameters related to the autonomous report to values of one or more input parameters of the policy entry;

determine a reference NCF for a first network, the reference NCF for the first network corresponding to the policy entry; and

request to transmit the autonomous report on the first network based on a comparison of the reference NCF for the first network and the current NCF of the first network.

11. The apparatus of claim 10 , wherein the treatment for transmission of the policy entry comprises:

a plurality of NCFs for a corresponding plurality of networks.

12. The apparatus of claim 11 wherein the treatment for transmission of the policy entry further comprises:

an adjusted change of periodicity indicating a time shift for the autonomous report.

13. The apparatus of claim 12 , wherein the processor is configured to modify the adjusted change of periodicity based on patterns of periodic autonomous reporting and a number of devices involved in the reporting.

14. The apparatus of claim 10 wherein the input parameters of the policy entry comprise:

a power level required of the apparatus to send a transmission on a corresponding network, a time sensitivity of the autonomous report, a reliability required of the autonomous report, and a size of data of the autonomous report.

15. The apparatus of claim 10 wherein the one or more networks is one or more of a Long Term Evolution (LTE) network, a WiFi network, or a Long Range Wide area (LoRA) network.

16. The apparatus of claim 10 wherein the processor is configured to:

request to transmit the autonomous report when the reference NCF of the first network is greater than or equal to the current NCF of the first network; and abstain from requesting to transmit the autonomous report for a time interval when the reference NCF of the first network is less than the current NCF of the first network.

17. The apparatus of claim 10 wherein the processor is further configured to transmit the autonomous report on the first network.

18. The apparatus of claim 10 wherein the current NCF is a function of a current network load of the corresponding network, a number of devices on a cell to which the device is connected, and a reporting pattern of recent Internet of Things (IoT) requests for network resources.
