Abstract

Nutritional formulas comprising long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFAs) are provided, along with methods and devices for preparing and/or administering nutritional formulas. In some embodiments, a percentage of the LC-PUFAs in the nutritional formula are in the form of monoglycerides and/or free fatty acids. In some embodiments, the nutritional formulas do not comprise added lipase. Also provided are methods for providing nutrition to a subject, methods for improving fat absorption, methods for improving cognitive ability, methods for preventing chronic lung disease, and methods for reducing the length of time a patient requires total parenteral nutrition.

Claims (42)

1. A method of providing a nutritional formula to a patient, the method comprising:

receiving a nutritional composition within an enteral feeding device, the enteral feeding device comprising:

a container defining an interior for receiving the nutritional composition;

an opening fluidly connected to the container, wherein the opening is dimensioned for connection to a feeding tube;

a structure in fluid communication with the interior of the container; and

a lipase immobilized by covalent binding to the structure;

exposing the nutritional composition to the lipase when the nutritional composition is received within the container to hydrolyze long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid (LC-PUFA) triglycerides and/or LC-PUFA esters within the nutritional composition into monoglycerides and free fatty acids to form the nutritional formula;

delivering the nutritional formula out of the opening of the enteral feeding device and into a feeding tube; and

providing the nutritional formula to the patient via the feeding tube.

2. The method of claim 1 , further comprising retaining the immobilized lipase within the enteral feeding device while allowing the nutritional formula to exit the enteral feeding device.

3. The method of claim 1 , wherein the enteral feeding device comprises a second opening fluidly connected to the container, wherein the second opening is dimensioned for connection to a second feeding tube, and wherein the method further comprises delivering the nutritional composition to within the enteral feeding device via the second feeding tube.

4. The method of claim 1 , wherein the structure comprises particles contained within the container, and wherein exposing the nutritional composition to the lipase comprises moving the nutritional composition through the particles contained within the container.

5. The method of claim 1 , further comprising regulating a flow of the nutritional composition through the enteral feeding device using a valve.

6. The method of claim 1 , wherein the nutritional composition is exposed to the lipase for at least one minute, prior to providing the nutritional formula to the patient.

7. The method of claim 1 , wherein the nutritional composition is exposed to the lipase for no more than thirty seconds, prior to providing the nutritional formula to the patient.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein the nutritional composition is exposed to the lipase for no more than one minute, prior to providing the nutritional formula to the patient.

9. The method of claim 1 , wherein the nutritional composition is exposed to the lipase for no more than five minutes, prior to providing the nutritional formula to the patient.

10. The method of claim 1 , wherein the nutritional composition is exposed to the lipase for no more than sixty minutes, prior to providing the nutritional formula to the patient.

11. The method of claim 1 , wherein the nutritional formula is provided to the patient before re-esterification of the free fatty acids.

12. The method of claim 1 , further comprising screening or filtering the nutritional formula to prevent the lipase from exiting the enteral feeding device with the nutritional formula.

13. A method of providing a nutritional formula to a patient, the method comprising:

passing a nutritional composition comprising long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid (LC-PUFA) triglycerides into a fluid inlet of an enteral feeding device;

exposing the nutritional composition to lipase immobilized by covalent binding to a plurality of particles within the enteral feeding device, wherein exposing the nutritional composition to the lipase hydrolyzes at least some of the LC-PUFA triglycerides to form monoglycerides and free fatty acids to create the nutritional formula;

delivering the nutritional formula out of a fluid outlet of the enteral feeding device and into a feeding tube; and

providing the nutritional formula to the patient via the feeding tube.

14. The method of claim 13 , further comprising connecting the feeding tube to the fluid outlet of the enteral feeding device.

15. The method of claim 13 , further comprising regulating a flow of the nutritional composition through the enteral feeding device using a valve.

16. The method of claim 13 , further comprising screening or filtering the nutritional formula to prevent the lipase from exiting the enteral feeding device with the nutritional formula.

17. The method of claim 13 , wherein the nutritional composition is exposed to the lipase for at least one minute, prior to providing the nutritional formula to the patient.

18. The method of claim 13 , wherein the nutritional composition is exposed to the lipase for no more than thirty seconds, prior to providing the nutritional formula to the patient.

19. The method of claim 13 , wherein the nutritional composition is exposed to the lipase for no more than one minute, prior to providing the nutritional formula to the patient.

20. The method of claim 13 , wherein the nutritional composition is exposed to the lipase for no more than five minutes, prior to providing the nutritional formula to the patient.

21. The method of claim 13 , wherein the nutritional composition is exposed to the lipase for no more than sixty minutes, prior to providing the nutritional formula to the patient.

22. The method of claim 13 , wherein the nutritional formula is provided to the patient before re-esterification of the free fatty acids.

23. The method of claim 13 , further comprising retaining the immobilized lipase within the enteral feeding device so that no more than 0.1 milligram of lipase per milligram of LC-PUFA is delivered from the enteral feeding device.

24. A method of providing a nutritional formula to a patient, the method comprising

receiving a nutritional composition comprising long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acid (LC-PUFA) triglycerides within an enteral feeding device;

exposing the nutritional composition to lipase immobilized by covalent binding to a plurality of particles within the enteral feeding device;

retaining the immobilized lipase within the enteral feeding device so that no more than 0.1 milligram of lipase per milligram of LC-PUFA is delivered from the enteral feeding device; and

delivering the nutritional formula from the enteral feeding device to the patient via a feeding tube.

25. The method of claim 24 , wherein the lipase is configured to hydrolyze the LC-PUFA within the nutritional composition to produce monoglycerides and free fatty acids in the nutritional formula.

26. The method of claim 24 , wherein a second feeding tube is used to receive the nutritional composition within the enteral feeding device.
