Abstract

A safety device for an actuator that can modulate power to an electric motor in response to a fault condition (e.g., stall). In one embodiment, the actuator can include a motor with a shaft, a sensor disposed in proximity to the shaft, and a control processor coupled with the sensor and the motor. The control processor can be configured to receive a signal from the sensor that conveys operating data that relates to rotation of the shaft, use the operating data to identify a fault condition on the motor, and change the motor from an energized condition to a de-energized condition in response to the fault condition.

Claims (26)

1. An actuator, comprising:

a shaft;

a motor coupled with the shaft; and

a control structure coupled with the motor, the control structure off-board the motor and comprising a power supply and a triac, the triac coupling a first input/output to a second input/output, the first input/output coupled to the motor and the second input/output coupled to the power supply, wherein the control structure is configured for the triac to switch between a first state and a second state to prevent an electrical signal from the power supply to the first input/output so as to maintain temperature of the motor at or below a threshold level.

2. The actuator of claim 1 , further comprising:

a counter to measure a duty cycle that indicates duration of an operating condition on the motor, wherein the control structure is configured to actuate the switch in response to the duty cycle.

3. An actuator, comprising:

an electric motor;

a triac off-board the electric motor and having a first state and a second state responsive to a condition that indicates stall of the electric motor;

a power source; and

a controller coupled to each of the electric motor, the power source, and the triac,

wherein the controller is configured to,

receive a signal from the power source;

prevent the signal to power to the electric motor with the triac in only one of the first state or the second state; and

restore the signal to power the electric motor with the triac in only one of the first state or the second state.

4. The actuator of claim 3 , further comprising a sensor, wherein the sensor comprises a temperature-sensitive device.

5. The actuator of claim 3 , wherein the condition corresponds with temperature onboard the electric motor.

6. The actuator of claim 3 , wherein the condition corresponds with temperature on the controller.

7. The actuator of claim 3 , wherein the condition corresponds with temperature in excess of a threshold level.

8. The actuator of claim 3 , wherein the controller is configured to,

compare temperature on said actuator to a threshold level, wherein power is turned off when the temperature exceeds the threshold level.

9. The actuator of claim 3 , wherein the condition corresponds with an annular speed of the motor.

10. The actuator of claim 9 , wherein the controller is configured to, equate an elapsed time between pulses in the signal to the annular speed.

11. The actuator of claim 3 , further comprising:

an actuator member coupled with the electric motor,

wherein the condition corresponds with travel of the actuator member.
