Abstract

A system that incorporates teachings of the present disclosure may include, for example, a display device having a controller to wirelessly receive media; wirelessly receive control signals for presentation of the media from a mobile communication device; and selectively disable control by the display device over presentation of the media on the display device. Additional embodiments are disclosed.

Claims (43)

1. A presentation device comprising:

a memory to store instructions; and

a processor coupled to the memory, wherein the processor, responsive to executing the instructions, performs operations comprising:

determining, responsive to a detection of a communication device, whether a mode of communication of the processor is compatible with a mode of communication utilized by the communication device, thereby determining whether the processor and the communication device can communicate wirelessly;

in accordance with a determination that the processor and the communication device can communicate wirelessly, determining whether to relinquish control of the presentation device from a control device that controls the presentation device to the communication device based on profile information associated with the communication device;

in accordance with a determination to relinquish control based on the profile information, relinquishing control to the communication device over presentation of media at the presentation device by enabling processing of a control signal from the communication device for control of the presentation of the media at the presentation device; and

in accordance with a determination not to relinquish control based on the profile information, wirelessly providing a message to the communication device, wherein in response to the message the communication device presents a selection regarding whether the media is to be presented at the presentation device.

2. The presentation device of claim 1 , wherein, in accordance with the determination not to relinquish control based on the profile information, processing of the control signal from the communication device for control of the presentation of the media at the presentation device is not enabled.

3. The presentation device of claim 1 , wherein:

the communication device is a multimode communication device;

an icon of the communication device indicates whether any of a plurality of modes of communication available to the communication device is compatible with the mode of communication of the processor; and

the detection of the communication device comprises wirelessly receiving, by the presentation device, a detection signal from the communication device.

4. The presentation device of claim 1 , wherein the operations further comprise receiving the media in order to enable the presentation of the media.

5. The presentation device of claim 4 , wherein the media is received from a media source without the media being received from the communication device.

6. The presentation device of claim 4 , wherein the control signal is received according to a first mode of communication utilized by the communication device, and wherein the media is received according to a second mode of communication utilized by the communication device different from the first mode of communication.

7. The presentation device of claim 1 , wherein the profile information is stored in the memory.

8. The presentation device of claim 7 , wherein the profile information identifies the communication device as an authorized communication device for receiving control over presentation of the media.

9. The presentation device of claim 1 , wherein the media comprises a video game.

10. The presentation device of claim 1 , wherein the presentation device comprises a television.

11. A method comprising:

detecting, by a communication device comprising a processor, a presentation device, the communication device being remote from the presentation device;

determining, by the communication device, whether any of a plurality of modes of communication available to the communication device upon detecting the presentation device is compatible with a mode of communication utilized by the presentation device;

wirelessly transmitting, by the communication device, control signals to the presentation device, subsequent to the detecting of the presentation device, for control of a presentation of media at the presentation device by the communication device, wherein the control signals are wirelessly transmitted according to one of the plurality of modes of communication;

wirelessly transmitting, by the communication device, a disable signal to the presentation device to request the presentation device to disable other control functions regarding the presentation of the media at the presentation device while allowing the communication device to continue controlling presentation of the media via the control signals;

displaying, by the communication device responsive to the presentation device disabling the other control functions, an emulator to facilitate remote control over the presentation of the media at the presentation device;

enabling wireless transmission of the media to the presentation device responsive to an actuation of a selection to present the media at the presentation device; and

receiving and displaying, by the communication device responsive to the presentation device not disabling the other control functions, a message presenting the selection to a user of the communication device regarding whether the media is to be presented at the presentation device.

12. The method of claim 11 , wherein the control signals are transmitted according to a first mode of communication utilized by the communication device, and wherein the wireless transmission of the media is according to a second mode of communication utilized by the communication device different from the first mode of communication.

13. The method of claim 11 , wherein the media is received by the presentation device from a media source without the media being received from the communication device.

14. The method of claim 11 , wherein the detecting further comprises monitoring for a presence signal from the presentation device.

15. The method of claim 11 , wherein the disabling of the other control functions over the presentation of the media is subject to approval by the presentation device based on a device profile stored at the presentation device that identifies the communication device as an authorized communication device for receiving control over presentation of the media.

16. The method of claim 11 , wherein the emulator comprises selectable keys and a cursor for selecting a key, and wherein the selectable keys correspond to the other control functions.

17. The method of claim 16 , wherein the other control functions include playing, pausing, rewinding, and fast forwarding of the presentation of the media.

18. A machine-readable storage device comprising instructions which, responsive to being executed by a processor of a communication device, cause the processor to perform operations comprising:

detecting a presentation device, the communication device being remote from the presentation device;

determining whether a first mode of communication available to the communication device upon detecting the presentation device is compatible with a second mode of communication utilized by the presentation device;

wirelessly transmitting control signals, responsive to determining that the first mode of communication is compatible with the second mode of communication, to the presentation device for control of presentation of media at the presentation device;

wirelessly transmitting a disable signal to the presentation device to request the presentation device to disable control functions regarding the presentation of the media at the presentation device while allowing the communication device to continue controlling presentation of the media via the control signals;

displaying, responsive to the presentation device disabling the control functions, an emulator to facilitate remote control over the presentation of the media at the presentation device, the emulator comprising selectable keys and a cursor for selecting a key, wherein the selectable keys correspond to the control functions disabled at the presentation device, and wherein the control functions include playing, pausing, rewinding, and fast forwarding of the presentation of the media;

wirelessly transmitting the media to the presentation device for presentation at the presentation device; and

receiving and displaying, responsive to the presentation device not disabling the control functions, a message presenting a selection to a user of the communication device regarding whether the media is to be presented at the presentation device.

19. The machine-readable storage device of claim 18 , wherein the detecting further comprises monitoring for a presence signal from the presentation device.

20. The machine-readable storage device of claim 18 , wherein the processor comprises a plurality of processors operating in a distributed processing environment.
