Abstract

This disclosure provides connectors for smart windows. A smart window may incorporate an optically switchable pane. In one aspect, a window unit includes an insulated glass unit including an optically switchable pane. A wire assembly may be attached to the edge of the insulated glass unit and may include wires in electrical communication with electrodes of the optically switchable pane. A floating connector may be attached to a distal end of the wire assembly. The floating connector may include a flange and a nose, with two holes in the flange for affixing the floating connector to a first frame. The nose may include a terminal face that present two exposed contacts of opposite polarity.

Claims (30)

1. An electrical connection system of an insulated glass unit comprising an electrochromic device, the electrical connection system comprising:

a. a ribbon cable or tape conductor embedded in the secondary seal of the insulated glass unit and in electrical communication with the electrochromic device; and

b. an integrated circuit in electrical communication with the ribbon cable or tape conductor, the integrated circuit also embedded in the secondary seal of the insulated glass unit.

2. The electrical connection system of claim 1 , wherein the integrated circuit serves at least part of the control function of the electrochromic device.

3. The electrical connection system of claim 2 , wherein the integrated circuit is part of a window controller, configured to control the electrochromic device.

4. The electrical connection system of claim 3 , wherein the window controller is within the secondary seal.

5. The electrical connection system of claim 4 , wherein the window controller comprises a plug in modular format, the window controller configured to be inserted into a socket which is embedded in the secondary seal.

6. The electrical connection system of claim 3 , wherein the window controller is adjacent the secondary seal.

7. The electrical connection system of claim 6 , wherein the window controller comprises a plug in modular format, the window controller configured to be inserted into a socket which is embedded in the secondary seal.

8. The electrical connection system of claim 1 , wherein the ribbon cable or tape conductor are electrically connected to the integrated circuit via one or more pin connectors, also in the secondary seal.

9. The electrical connection system of claim 1 , wherein electricity is supplied to the electrochromic device via bus bars, the bus bars in electrical communication with the ribbon cable or tape conductor and the integrated circuit.

10. The electrical connection system of claim 9 , wherein the bus bars are within the primary seal of the insulated glass unit, the primary seal formed between a spacer of the insulated glass unit and a substrate upon which the electrochromic device resides.

11. The electrical connection system of claim 10 , wherein electrical communication between the bus bars and the electrical connection system is made through the primary seal.

12. The electrical connection system of claim 10 , wherein electrical communication between the bus bars and the electrical connection system is made through the spacer.

13. The electrical connection system of claim 10 , wherein the perimeter edge of the electrochromic device is within the primary seal.

14. The electrical connection system of claim 1 , wherein the electrochromic device is solid state and inorganic.

15. An insulated glass unit comprising:

a. an electrochromic device;

b. a ribbon cable or tape conductor embedded in the secondary seal of the insulated glass unit and in electrical communication with the electrochromic device; and

c. a window controller configured to control the electrochromic device, the window controller in electrical communication with the ribbon cable or tape conductor.

16. The insulated glass unit of claim 15 , wherein the window controller is within the secondary seal.

17. The insulated glass unit of claim 16 , wherein the window controller comprises a plug in modular format, the window controller configured to be inserted into a socket which is embedded in the secondary seal.

18. The insulated glass unit of claim 15 , wherein the window controller is adjacent the secondary seal.

19. The insulated glass unit of claim 18 , wherein the window controller comprises a plug in modular format, the window controller configured to be inserted into a socket which is embedded in the secondary seal.

20. The insulated glass unit of claim 15 , wherein electricity is supplied to the electrochromic device via bus bars.

21. The insulated glass unit of claim 20 , wherein the bus bars are within the primary seal of the insulated glass unit, the primary seal formed between a spacer of the insulated glass unit and a substrate upon which the electrochromic device resides.

22. The insulated glass unit of claim 21 , wherein electrical communication between the bus bars and the electrical connection system is made through the primary seal.

23. The insulated glass unit of claim 21 , wherein electrical communication between the bus bars and the electrical connection system is made through the spacer.

24. The insulated glass unit of claim 21 , wherein the perimeter edge of the electrochromic device is within the primary seal.

25. The insulated glass unit of claim 15 , wherein the electrochromic device is solid state and inorganic.
