Abstract

A system includes an energy source configured to generate therapeutic energy, a treatment probe, an ultrasound imaging device configured to generate ultrasound images, a second tracking sensor configured to track a location of the ultrasound imaging device, and a tracking system configured to receive location information from the first and second tracking sensors and to overlay the ultrasound images with a graphical representation of the treatment probe on a display based on the location information. The treatment probe includes an antenna configured to treat tissue with the therapeutic energy and a first tracking sensor integrated in the antenna and configured to track a location of a distal tip of the antenna.

Claims (49)

1. A system comprising:

an energy source configured to generate therapeutic energy;

a treatment probe including:

an antenna configured to treat tissue with the therapeutic energy, the antenna including:

an outer conductor; and

a balun surrounding the outer conductor;

an inflow tube configured to wrap around a portion of the antenna and to provide space for a cooling fluid to flow through the antenna; and

a first tracking sensor disposed on the outer conductor proximal to the balun and configured to track a location of the antenna, wherein the first tracking sensor is located inside of the inflow tube such that temperature surrounding the first tracking sensor is controlled to allow the first tracking sensor to function within its tolerance range;

a second tracking sensor configured to track a location of an ultrasound imaging device configured to generate ultrasound images;

a tracking system configured to receive location information from the first and second tracking sensors and to overlay the ultrasound images with a graphical representation of the treatment probe on a display based on the location information;

a disposable cable configured to provide the therapeutic energy to the antenna; and

a reusable cable configured to connect the disposable cable to the energy source.

2. The system according to claim 1 , further comprising:

a first connector configured to connect the disposable cable to the reusable cable;

a second connector configured to connect the reusable cable to the energy source.

3. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the treatment probe includes a sensor wire connected to the first tracking sensor and the location information received by the tracking system from the first tracking sensor is based on a property of at least one of the first tracking sensor or the sensor wire.

4. The system according to claim 2 , wherein the sensor wire extends inside of the disposable cable and branches out from the disposable cable prior to the first connector.

5. The system according to claim 2 , wherein the sensor wire extends inside the disposable cable, the first connector, and the reusable cable, and branches out from the reusable cable prior to the second connector.

6. The system according to claim 2 , wherein the sensor wire extends inside the disposable cable, the first connector, the reusable cable, and the second connector.

7. The system according to claim 1 , wherein the tracking system is configured to display a location of the treatment probe with respect to at least one target in the overlaid ultrasound images with the graphical representation, based on a spatial relationship between the location of the treatment probe and the location of the ultrasound imaging device.

8. A system, comprising:

an energy source configured to generate therapeutic energy;

a treatment probe including:

an antenna configured to treat tissue with the therapeutic energy, the antenna including:

an outer conductor; and

a balun surrounding the outer conductor;

an inflow tube configured to provide a cooling fluid to the antenna; and

a first tracking sensor disposed on the outer conductor proximal to the balun and configured to track a location of the antenna;

a second tracking sensor configured to track a location of an ultrasound imaging device configured to generate ultrasound images; and

a tracking system configured to receive location information from the first and second tracking sensors and to overlay the ultrasound images with a graphical representation of the treatment probe on a display based on the location information.

9. The system according to claim 8 , wherein the inflow tube is configured to wrap around a portion of the antenna and to provide space for the cooling fluid to flow through the antenna.

10. The system according to claim 9 , wherein the first tracking sensor is located inside of the inflow tube such that temperature surrounding the first tracking sensor is controlled to allow the first tracking sensor to function within its tolerance range.

11. The system according to claim 8 , further comprising a disposable cable configured to provide microwave energy to the antenna.

12. The system according to claim 11 , further comprising a reusable cable configured to connect the disposable cable to the energy source.

13. The system according to claim 8 , further comprising a sensor wire connected to the first tracking sensor, wherein the location information received by the tracking system from the first tracking sensor is based on a property of at least one of the first tracking sensor or the sensor wire.

14. A system, comprising:

an energy source configured to generate therapeutic energy;

an antenna configured to treat tissue with the therapeutic energy, the antenna including:

an outer conductor; and

a balun surrounding the outer conductor;

a first tracking sensor disposed on the outer conductor proximal to the balun and configured to track a location of the antenna;

a second tracking sensor configured to track a location of an ultrasound imaging device configured to generate ultrasound images; and

a tracking system configured to generate, based on the location of the antenna and the location of the ultrasound imaging device, a graphical representation of the antenna overlaid on the ultrasound images generated by the ultrasound imaging device.

15. The system according to claim 14 , further comprising an inflow tube configured to wrap around a portion of the antenna and to provide space for a cooling fluid to flow through the antenna.

16. The system according to claim 15 , wherein the first tracking sensor is located inside of the inflow tube such that temperature surrounding the first tracking sensor is controlled to allow the first tracking sensor to function within its tolerance range.

17. The system according to claim 14 , further comprising a disposable cable configured to provide microwave energy to the antenna.

18. The system according to claim 17 , further comprising a reusable cable configured to connect the disposable cable to the energy source.

19. The system according to claim 14 , further comprising a sensor wire connected to the first tracking sensor, wherein the location of the antenna received by the tracking system from the first tracking sensor is based on a property of at least one of the first tracking sensor or the sensor wire.
