Abstract

Systems and methods are described herein for a media guidance application that can cause a specific portion of a media asset to be stored based on a user command. For example, if the user requests the closing scene from a given movie, the media guidance application may detect the command, determine that it comprises an instruction to store a portion of a media asset, identify a source of the portion of the media asset, and cause the portion of the media asset to be stored. The media guidance application may also cause the entirety of the media asset to be stored and initiate playback at the start of the requested portion. This may allow users to store and watch portions of particular interest without requiring that the users seek through the entire media asset on their own.

causing the portion of the media asset to be stored at the device.

7. The method of claim 6 further comprising generating for display a storage confirmation message when the source from which the portion of the media asset is available has been identified and the device has been determined.

8. The method of claim 1 , wherein causing the portion of the media asset to be stored comprises:

determining whether there is sufficient space on a device for the portion of the media asset to be stored;

based on determining that there is insufficient space on the device for the portion of the media asset to be stored, providing to the user an option to select a media asset to delete from the device;

receiving a selection from the user of a second media asset to delete from the device;

causing the second media asset to be deleted from the device; and

causing the portion of the media asset to be stored on the device.

9. A system for storing a portion of a media asset in response to receiving a voice command, where the voice command includes a duration of the portion but does not expressly indicate a starting position of the portion of the media asset, the system comprising:

communications circuitry; and

control circuitry configured to:

receive a voice command from a user using a microphone; and

in response to determining that the voice command comprises an instruction to store a portion of a media asset that is currently playing:

process an audio signal detected by the microphone to identify an audio output of the media asset upon determining that the voice command received using the microphone comprises the instruction to store the portion of the media asset;

determine a fingerprint based on the audio output;

access a database comprising a plurality of known fingerprints;

identify a given fingerprint of the plurality of known fingerprints;

identify, using the given fingerprint, a source from which the portion of the media asset is available;

determine a position of the media asset that corresponds to a time at which the audio output was detected;

determine a starting position of the portion of the media asset based on the instruction and the position of the media asset at the time;

extract a duration of the portion of the media asset from the instruction;

access the portion of the media asset from the source starting from the starting position of the portion of the media asset and using the extracted duration as a length of the portion; and

cause the portion of the media asset to be stored.

10. The system of claim 9 , wherein the control circuitry is configured to identify the given fingerprint of the plurality of known fingerprints that matches the fingerprint by:

determining a mathematical distance between the fingerprint and the given fingerprint of the plurality of known fingerprints; and

comparing the mathematical distance to a threshold.

11. The system of claim 10 , wherein the mathematical distance between the fingerprint and the given fingerprint of the plurality of known fingerprints is a Hamming distance.

12. The system of claim 9 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to determine an ending position of the portion of the media asset by:

querying the source from which the portion of the media asset is available to determine the total length of the media asset; and

determining the ending position of the portion of the media asset to be the ending point of the media asset.

13. The system of claim 9 , wherein the control circuitry is further configured to determine an ending position of the portion of the media asset by:
