Abstract

Methods and compositions for modulating shoot apical meristem size are provided. Methods are provided for modulating the expression of fea3 sequence in a host plant or plant cell to modulate agronomic characteristics such as altered size and number of organs, including plant seeds.

Claims (5)

1. A modified maize plant in which expression of an endogenous FEA3 gene encoding a FEA3 polypeptide that comprises an amino acid sequence that is at least 95% identical to SEQ ID NO: 3 is reduced relative to a control plant, wherein the modified maize plant comprises an introduced mutation in the endogenous FEA3 gene and exhibits increased kernel row number compared to the control plant.

2. The maize plant of claim 1 , wherein the maize plant exhibits increased seed number, when compared to the control plant not comprising the mutation.

3. The maize plant of claim 1 , wherein the maize plant comprises in its genome a recombinant DNA construct comprising an isolated polynucleotide operably linked, in sense or antisense orientation or both, to a promoter functional in a plant, wherein the polynucleotide targets the endogenous FEA3 gene, wherein expression of the endogenous FEA3 gene is reduced and wherein the maize plant exhibits an increase in kernel row number when compared to a control plant not comprising the recombinant DNA construct.

4. The maize plant of claim 1 , wherein the mutation is present in a regulatory element of the FEA3 gene.

5. Seed of the plant of claim 1 , wherein the seed comprises the mutation.
