Abstract

A portable spectrometer device includes an illumination source for directing at a sample, and a tapered light pipe (TLP) for capturing light interacting with the sample at a first focal ratio and for delivering the light at a second focal ratio lower than the first focal ratio. A linearly variable filter (LVF) separates the captured light into a spectrum of constituent wavelength signals; and a detector array, including a plurality of pixels, each of the plurality of pixels disposed to receive at least a portion of a plurality of the constituent wavelength signals provides a power reading for each constituent wavelength. Preferably, the TLP is lensed at one end, and recessed in a protective boot with stepped inner walls. The gap between the TLP and LVF is minimized to further enhance resolution and robustness.

Claims (52)

1. A device comprising:

a tapered light pipe (TLP) for capturing light;

a TLP boot including a support section for supporting the TLP;

a variable filter for separating light into a spectrum of wavelength signals; and

a detector array for providing a power reading for a wavelength of the spectrum of wavelength signals.

2. The device of claim 1 , where the detector array includes a plurality of pixels.

3. The device of claim 1 , where the TLP boot further includes a spacer section for spacing the TLP a particular distance from a sample,

the spacer section including stepped inner walls.

4. The device of claim 1 , where the variable filter includes a multi-layer stack.

5. The device of claim 4 , where the multi-layer stack includes a plurality of reflectors.

6. The device of claim 1 ,

where the device communicates with a control device, and

where the spectrum of wavelength signals is received by the control device and compared to a library of spectrum models for generation of a result of comparing the spectrum of wavelength signals to the library of spectrum models.

7. The device of claim 1 , where the variable filter is a linearly variable filter.

8. The device of claim 1 , further comprising:

one or more illumination sources that direct the light at a sample.

9. The device of claim 8 , where the one or more illumination sources include an illumination source that is below the sample.

10. The device of claim 1 ,

where the device communicates with a temperature feedback device, and

where a temperate adjustment is performed based on a temperature from temperature feedback device.

11. The device of claim 1 ,

where the variable filter and the detector array are separated by a gap, and

where the gap includes an optically transparent adhesive.

12. A method comprising:

separating, by a variable filter, light into a spectrum of wavelength signals,

the light being accepted by a tapered light pipe (TLP) at a first focal ratio with a first cone angle,

the light being delivered by the TLP to the variable filter at a second focal ratio with a second cone angle, and

the second cone angle being less than the first cone angle; and

providing, by a detector array, a power reading for a wavelength of the spectrum of wavelength signals.

13. The method of claim 12 , further comprising:

using one or more illumination sources to direct the light at a sample.

14. The method of claim 12 , further comprising:

using the TLP to capture the light from a sample.

15. The method of claim 12 , further comprising:

using the TLP to deliver the light to the variable filter.

16. The method of claim 12 , further comprising:

using a plurality of sidewalls to mix and spread the light before separating the light into the spectrum of wavelength signals.

17. The method of claim 12 ,

where the variable filter and the detector array are separated by a gap, and

where the gap includes an optically transparent adhesive.

18. The method of claim 12 , further comprising:

positioning a first end of the TLP adjacent to a sample; and

positioning a second end of the TLP adjacent to the variable filter,

the first end having first dimensions, and

the second end having second dimensions that are greater than the first dimensions.

19. A system comprising:

a tapered light pipe (TLP) for capturing light from a sample; and

a variable filter for separating the light into a spectrum of wavelength signals,

the TLP accepting the light at a first focal ratio with a first cone angle and delivering the light to the variable filter at a second focal ratio with a second cone angle that is less than the first cone angle.

20. The system of claim 19 , where the TLP includes:

a first end, positioned adjacent to the sample, having first dimensions, and

a second end, positioned adjacent to the variable filter, having second dimensions.
