Abstract

Embodiments of the invention are directed to a system for detecting neurotransmitters. A non-limiting example of the system includes a porous electrode. A system can also include a pH sensor attached to the porous electrode, wherein the pH sensor includes a sensing electrode and a reference electrode. The system can also include electronic circuitry in communication with the pH sensor.

Claims (23)

1. A method of fabricating an electrode structure comprising:

depositing an insulating layer on a silicon substrate;

depositing a nitride layer on the insulating layer;

forming a first opening extending into the nitride layer and the insulating layer;

forming a second opening extending into the nitride layer and the insulating layer;

depositing a reference electrode material in the first opening to form a reference electrode and depositing a sensing electrode material in the second opening to form a sensing electrode;

depositing a metal oxide layer directly on the reference electrode material and the sensing electrode material such that the metal oxide layer directly contacts an upper surface of at least one of the reference electrode and the sensing electrode;

forming a trench directly beneath the metal oxide layer and around the reference electrode and the sensing electrode, wherein the trench is bounded by the nitride layer, the metal oxide layer, and the insulating layer and extends from one side of the reference electrode to an opposing side of the sensing electrode; and

depositing a porous electrode on the metal oxide layer.

2. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the porous electrode is a graphene layer.

3. The method according to claim 2 , wherein depositing the graphene layer comprises transfer printing.

4. The method according to claim 1 , wherein the porous electrode is metal mesh.

5. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising filling the trench with an aqueous solution.

6. The method according to claim 1 , further comprising planarizing the structure after forming the reference electrode and the sensing electrode.

7. A method of fabricating an electrode structure comprising:

depositing an insulating layer on a silicon substrate;

depositing a nitride layer on the insulating layer;

forming a first opening extending into the nitride layer and the insulating layer;

forming a second opening extending into the nitride layer and the insulating layer;

depositing a reference electrode material comprising silver or titanium in the first opening to form a reference electrode and depositing a sensing electrode material comprising platinum or titanium in the second opening to form a sensing electrode;

depositing a metal oxide layer directly on the reference electrode material and the sensing electrode material such that the metal oxide layer directly contacts an upper surface of at least one of the reference electrode and the sensing electrode;

forming a trench directly beneath the metal oxide layer around the reference electrode and the sensing electrode, wherein the trench is bounded by the nitride layer, the metal oxide layer, and the insulating layer and extends from one side of the reference electrode to an opposing side of the sensing electrode; and

depositing a porous electrode on the metal oxide layer.
