Abstract

A motorized surgical instrument is disclosed. The surgical instrument includes a displacement member, a motor coupled to the displacement member, a control circuit coupled to the motor, a position sensor coupled to the control circuit, and a timer circuit coupled to the control circuit. The control circuit is configured to receive, from the position sensor, a position of the displacement member in a current zone defined by a set displacement interval, measure time at a set position of the displacement interval, wherein the measured time is defined as the time taken by the displacement member to traverse the displacement interval, and set a command velocity of the displacement member for a subsequent zone based on the measured time in the current predefined zone.

a timer/counter circuit coupled to the control circuit, the timer/counter circuit configured to measure elapsed time;

wherein the control circuit is configured to:

set predetermined displacement intervals;

transmit control signals to the motor, wherein the control signals are configured to translate the displacement member between the proximal position and the distal position over predefined zones, wherein each predefined zone is defined by a predetermined displacement interval of the set predetermined displacement intervals, wherein each control signal corresponds to a command velocity of the motor, and wherein each command velocity corresponds to a desired velocity of the displacement member through a predefined zone of the predefined zones;

receive, from the position sensor, a position of the displacement member in a current zone of the predefined zones, wherein the current zone is defined by a first predetermined displacement interval of the set predetermined displacement intervals;

transmit a first control signal of the control signals to the motor, wherein the first control signal corresponds to a first command velocity of the motor;

measure, using the timer/counter circuit, time at the first predetermined displacement interval, wherein the measured time is defined as time taken by the displacement member to traverse the first predetermined displacement interval in response to the first command velocity; and

set a command velocity of the displacement member for a subsequent zone of the predefined zones based on the measured time in the current zone.

2. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the control circuit is configured to:

determine the predetermined displacement interval in which the displacement member is located, wherein the predetermined displacement interval is defined by a beginning position and an ending position; and

measure the time when the displacement member reaches the ending position of the predetermined displacement interval.

3. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the control circuit is configured to:

compare the measured time to a predetermined time stored in a memory coupled to the control circuit; and

determine whether to adjust or maintain the command velocity based on the comparison.

4. The surgical instrument of claim 3 , wherein the control circuit is configured to maintain the command velocity for the subsequent zone the same as the first command velocity of the current zone when the measured time is within a range of predetermined times.

5. The surgical instrument of claim 3 , wherein the control circuit is configured to adjust the command velocity for the subsequent zone different from the first command velocity of the current zone when the measured time is outside a range of predetermined times.

6. The surgical instrument of claim 5 , wherein the control circuit is configured to skip a time measurement for a subsequent zone when the command velocity is adjusted.

7. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein multiple zones are defined for a staple cartridge configured to operate with the surgical instrument.

8. The surgical instrument of claim 7 , wherein at least two zones of the predefined zones have a different length.

9. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein more than one of the set predetermined displacement intervals are different than another of the set predetermined displacement intervals.

10. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the subsequent zone is defined by a second predetermined displacement interval of the set predetermined displacement intervals.

11. The surgical instrument of claim 10 , wherein the second predetermined displacement interval is different than the first predetermined displacement interval.

12. A method of controlling motor velocity in a surgical instrument, the surgical instrument comprising a displacement member movable within the surgical instrument between a proximal position and a distal position, a motor coupled to the displacement member to translate the displacement member between the proximal position and the distal position, a control circuit coupled to the motor, a position sensor coupled to the control circuit, the position sensor configured to monitor a position of the displacement member, a timer/counter circuit coupled to the control circuit, the timer/counter circuit configured to measure elapsed time, the method comprising:

setting, by the control circuit, predetermined displacement intervals;

receiving, from the position sensor, a position of the displacement member within a current zone of a plurality of predefined zones, wherein the current zone is defined by a first predetermined displacement interval of the predetermined displacement intervals;

transmitting, by the control circuit, a first control signal to the motor, wherein the first control signal corresponds to a first command velocity of the motor, and wherein the first command velocity corresponds to a desired velocity of the displacement member through the current zone;

measuring, by the timer/counter circuit, a time at the first predetermined displacement interval, wherein the measured time is defined by the time taken by the displacement member to traverse the first predetermined displacement interval; and

setting, by the control circuit, a command velocity of the displacement member for a subsequent zone of the predefined zones based on the measured time in the current zone.

13. The method of claim 12 , further comprising:

determining, by the control circuit and the timer/counter circuit, the predetermined displacement interval in which the displacement member is located, wherein the predetermined displacement interval is defined by a beginning position and an ending position; and

measuring, by the control circuit, the time when the displacement member reaches the ending position of the predetermined displacement interval.
