Abstract

A staple cartridge comprising a power management circuit is disclosed.

Claims (49)

1. A surgical stapling system, comprising:

a stapling instrument, comprising:

a shaft;

a first antenna circuit;

a second antenna circuit; and

a jaw; and

a staple cartridge seated in said jaw, wherein said staple cartridge comprises:

a cartridge body;

staples removably stored in said cartridge body;

a power management circuit comprising a first antenna coil and a second antenna coil, wherein said first antenna circuit is aligned with said first antenna coil and said second antenna circuit is aligned with said second antenna coil when said staple cartridge is seated in said jaw, wherein said power management circuit comprises a processor in communication with said first antenna coil and said second antenna coil, wherein said processor is operable in a low power mode and a high power mode, wherein said processor switches from said low power mode to said high power mode after said processor receives a first wake input from said first antenna circuit and a second wake input from said second antenna circuit.

2. The surgical stapling instrument of claim 1 , wherein said first antenna circuit comprises a power supply circuit and said second antenna circuit comprises a data transmission circuit.

3. The surgical stapling instrument of claim 2 , wherein said first wake input comprises a current in said first antenna coil that exceeds a threshold.

4. The surgical stapling instrument of claim 3 , wherein said second wake input comprises a wake signal.

5. The surgical stapling instrument of claim 1 , wherein said first wake input comprises a security key and said second wake input comprises a physically-detected trigger.

6. The surgical stapling system of claim 1 , wherein said stapling instrument further comprises a handle, and wherein said shaft extends from said handle.

7. The surgical stapling system of claim 1 , wherein said stapling instrument further comprises a housing configured to be attached to a robotic surgical system, and wherein said shaft extends from said housing.

8. The surgical stapling system of claim 1 , wherein in said low power mode, the processor is not sampling data from tissue sensors, processing data communicated to the staple cartridge from the stapling instrument, and/or transmitting data to the stapling instrument, and in said high power mode, the processor is sampling data from said tissue sensors, processing data communicated to the staple cartridge from the stapling instrument, and transmitting data to the stapling instrument.

9. A surgical stapling system, comprising:

a stapling instrument, comprising:

a shaft;

an antenna circuit; and

a jaw; and

a staple cartridge seated in said jaw, wherein said staple cartridge comprises:

a cartridge body;

staples removably stored in said cartridge body; and

a power management circuit comprising an antenna coil and an accelerometer, wherein said antenna circuit is aligned with said antenna coil when said staple cartridge is seated in said jaw, wherein said power management circuit comprises a processor in communication with said antenna coil and said accelerometer, wherein said processor is operable in a low power mode and a high power mode, wherein said processor switches from said low power mode to said high power mode after said processor receives a first wake input from said antenna circuit and a second wake input from said accelerometer.

10. The surgical stapling system of claim 9 , wherein said accelerometer is mounted to said cartridge body.

11. The surgical stapling system of claim 9 , wherein said accelerometer is configured to generate said wake input when said accelerometer detects sudden acceleration associated caused by insertion of the staple cartridge into its seated position with sufficient force applied thereto so as to engage a snap or press-fit feature of said staple cartridge with said jaw.

12. The surgical stapling system of claim 9 , wherein said staple cartridge comprises a power source coupled with the power management circuit and configured to supply power to the said processor.

13. The surgical stapling system of claim 9 , wherein said low power mode comprises a sleep mode wherein the processor is not sampling data from tissue sensors, processing data communicated to the staple cartridge from the stapling instrument, and/or transmitting data to the stapling instrument, and said high power mode comprises a wake mode wherein said processor s sampling data from said tissue sensors, processing data communicated to the staple cartridge from the stapling instrument, and transmitting data to the stapling instrument.

14. The surgical stapling system of claim 9 , wherein said accelerometer is configured to output a voltage potential to said processor, wherein said processor is configured to not recognize said voltage potential as said second wake input when said voltage potential is below a threshold, and wherein said processor is configured to recognize said voltage potential as said second wake input when said voltage potential is above said threshold.

15. A surgical stapling system, comprising:

a stapling instrument, comprising:

a shaft;

an antenna circuit; and

a jaw; and

a staple cartridge seated in said jaw, wherein said staple cartridge comprises:

a cartridge body;

staples removably stored in said cartridge body;

a control circuit including a data transmission circuit and an antenna coil, aligned with said antenna circuit when said staple cartridge is seated in said jaw, and configured to transmit data via the antenna coil to the antenna circuit of the stapling instrument;

a cartridge power source; and

a wake-up circuit coupled between the cartridge power source and the control circuit and energized by a power source external to the staple cartridge, the wake-up circuit configured to, responsive to the external power source, connect the control circuit to the cartridge power source to switch from a first power mode to a second power mode, wherein upon connection with the cartridge power source, the control circuit transmits data to the stapling instrument.

16. The surgical stapling system of claim 15 , wherein the wake-up circuit is energized by the external power source via the antenna circuit and antenna coil.

17. The surgical stapling system of claim 15 , wherein the staple cartridge further comprises:

a power management circuit coupled with the control circuit and the wake-up circuit and further including an accelerometer, wherein said power management circuit comprises a processor in communication with said antenna coil and said accelerometer, wherein said processor is operable to cause the wake-up circuit to connect the control circuit to the cartridge power source when the wake-up circuit is energized by the external power source and another input is received from said accelerometer.

18. The surgical stapling system of claim 15 , wherein the staple cartridge further comprises:

a power management circuit coupled with the control circuit and the wake-up circuit and which further includes another antenna coil aligned with another antenna circuit of the stapling instrument, wherein said power management circuit comprises a processor in communication with said antenna coil, wherein said processor is operable to cause the wake-up circuit to connect the control circuit to the cartridge power source when the wake-up circuit is energized by the external power source and another input is received by the other antenna coil from the other antenna circuit of the stapling instrument.

19. The surgical stapling system of claim 15 , wherein the cartridge power source receives power from a source external to the staple cartridge.

20. The surgical stapling system of claim 15 , wherein the cartridge power source comprises one of a battery or a charge accumulator.
