Abstract

Method and apparatus for centrifugal blood component separation including temperature sensing in each of a plurality of separation cells. The temperature of unit of bloods over time is recorded. If the temperature of any of the units exceeds a pre-determined maximum, portions of the blood separation device may be cooled. A controller may determine which of the units to process first, generally proceeding from the warmest unit to the coolest. The order of unit processing may be changed during processing. The detected temperature may be used to calibrate a pressure sensor used to predict the volume of a component separated from a composite fluid by predicting the volume of the composite fluid from sensed pressure and predicting the volume of other separated components from sensed movement of the other components to collection bags.

Claims (21)

1. A method of controlling a multi-unit centrifugal blood processor comprising:

loading a plurality of units of blood components into a plurality of separation cavities on the centrifugal blood processor;

detecting a temperature of each of the units of blood components;

based on the detecting, calibrating a plurality of pressure sensors disposed in the plurality of separation cavities to measure pressure of each of the plurality of units of blood components in the plurality of separation cavities;

sensing fluid pressure in each of the plurality of separation cavities after the calibrating step;

predicting a volume of each of the plurality of units of blood components from the sensing the fluid pressure step;

separating each unit of blood components into at least a first component and a second component;

cooling at least a portion of said centrifugal blood processor if any of said plurality of units of blood components exceeds a pre-determined temperature limit.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein step of detecting a temperature of each of the units of blood components further comprises continually detecting temperature during the separating step.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the units of blood components comprise whole blood, the first component being plasma and the second component being red blood cells.

4. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

expressing the first separated component from at least one of the plurality separation cavities to a collection cavity;

sensing the movement of the first separated component;

predicting the volume of the expressed first separated component from the sensing the movement step; and

predicting a volume of the second component remaining in the at least one of the plurality of separation cavities from the predicted volume of the each of the plurality of units of blood components and the predicted volume of the expressed first component.

5. The method of claim 4 wherein the sensing the movement of the first separated component comprises:

sensing the leading edge of the first component by detecting the presence of the first component; and

sensing the trailing edge of the first component by detecting the presence of a third component.

6. The method of claim 5 further comprising sensing the movement of the third component, wherein the sensing the movement of the third component comprises:

sensing the leading edge of the third component by detecting the presence of the third component; and

sensing the trailing edge of the third component by detecting the presence of the second component.
