Abstract

A surgical instrument is disclosed comprising an end effector including a first jaw and a second jaw, wherein the first jaw is rotatable relative to the second jaw, and a closure system configured to close the first jaw during a closure stroke. The surgical instrument further comprises an articulation joint rotatably connecting the end effector to the shaft, an articulation system configured to articulate the end effector relative to the shaft, and a firing system operably engaged with the electric motor, wherein the firing member is configured to move through the end effector during a firing stroke. The surgical instrument further comprises a first rotatable member configured to selectively synchronize the motion of the firing system with the motion of the articulation system and a second rotatable member operably engageable with the articulation system, wherein the closure system is configured to stop the rotation of the second rotatable member.

Claims (51)

1. A surgical instrument, comprising:

a housing comprising an electric motor;

a shaft extending from said housing, wherein said shaft comprises a frame;

an end effector, comprising:

a first jaw;

a second jaw, wherein said first jaw is rotatable relative to said second jaw;

a staple cartridge comprising staples removably stored therein; and

an anvil configured to deform said staples;

a closure system comprising a closure tube surrounding said frame configured to move said first jaw toward said second jaw during a closure stroke, wherein said closure tube defines the outer perimeter of said shaft;

an articulation joint rotatably connecting said end effector to said shaft;

an articulation system configured to articulate said end effector relative to said shaft;

a firing system operably engaged with said electric motor, wherein said firing system is configured to eject said staples from said staple cartridge during a staple-firing stroke;

a first rotatable drive gear configured to selectively transmit motion from said firing system to said articulation system; and

a second rotatable brake gear rotatably mounted to said frame, wherein said second rotatable brake gear is operably engaged with said articulation system, and wherein said closure tube comprises a wedge configured to engage said second rotatable brake gear during said closure stroke to lock said articulation system in place and prevent the articulation of said end effector.

2. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein said first rotatable drive gear is rotatably mounted within said frame.

3. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein said second rotatable brake gear comprises a gear intermeshed with a rack of teeth defined on said articulation system.

4. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein said first jaw comprises said staple cartridge and said second jaw comprises said anvil.

5. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein said first jaw comprises said anvil and said second jaw comprises said staple cartridge.

6. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein said housing comprises a handle.

7. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein said housing is attachable to a robotic surgical system.

8. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein said first rotatable drive gear is configured to operably decouple said articulation system from said firing system during said closure stroke.

9. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein said articulation system is operably decoupled from said firing system during said staple-firing stroke.

10. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein said closure system is retractable after said closure stroke to open said first jaw and to unlock said articulation system.

11. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein said second rotatable brake gear is rotatable about a post extending from said frame, wherein said post comprises a first brake arm and a second brake arm, and wherein said closure system is configured to engage said first and second brake arms during said closure stroke and prevent the rotation of said second rotatable brake gear.

12. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein said second rotatable brake gear comprises an annular array of teeth, and wherein said closure system is configured to engage said annular array of teeth during said closure stroke and prevent the rotation of said second rotatable brake gear.

13. A surgical instrument, comprising:

a housing comprising a rotatable input;

a shaft extending from said housing, wherein said shaft comprises a frame;

an end effector, comprising:

a first jaw; and

a second jaw, wherein said first jaw is rotatable relative to said second jaw;

a closure system comprising a closure tube surrounding said frame configured to close said first jaw during a closure stroke;

an articulation joint rotatably connecting said end effector to said shaft;

an articulation system configured to articulate said end effector relative to said shaft;

a firing system operably engaged with said rotatable input, wherein said firing system is configured to move through said end effector during a firing stroke;

a first rotatable drive gear configured to selectively synchronize said firing system and said articulation system; and

a second rotatable brake gear rotatably mounted to said frame, wherein said second rotatable brake gear is operably engaged with said articulation system, and wherein said closure tube comprises a wedge configured to engage said second rotatable brake gear during said closure stroke to lock said articulation system in place and prevent the articulation of said end effector.

14. The surgical instrument of claim 13 , further comprising a staple cartridge including staples removably stored therein.

15. A surgical instrument, comprising:

a housing comprising a rotatable input;

a shaft extending from said housing, wherein said shaft comprises a frame;

an end effector, comprising:

a first jaw; and

a second jaw, wherein said first jaw is rotatable relative to said second jaw;

a closure system comprising a closure tube surrounding said frame configured to close said first jaw during a closure stroke;

an articulation joint rotatably connecting said end effector to said shaft;

an articulation system configured to articulate said end effector relative to said shaft;

a firing system operably engaged with said rotatable input, wherein said firing system is configured to move through said end effector during a firing stroke;

a first rotatable drive gear configured to selectively synchronize the motion of said firing system with the motion of said articulation system; and

a second rotatable brake gear operably engageable with said articulation system, wherein said closure tube is configured to stop the rotation of said second rotatable brake gear during said closure stroke to lock said articulation system in place and prevent the articulation of said end effector.

16. The surgical instrument of claim 15 , further comprising a staple cartridge including staples removably stored therein.
