Abstract

A surgical instrument is provided for controlling control circuits for an independent energy delivery over segmented sections. The surgical instrument comprises an end effector comprising a first jaw and a second jaw, a first set of electrodes and a second set of electrodes and a slot defined between the first set of electrodes and the second set of electrodes. A cutting member configured to reciprocate within the slot. A control circuit is configured to receive information about impedance of tissue located between the first jaw and the second jaw of the end effector, provide electrosurgical energy to the first set of electrodes and the second set of electrodes and repeatedly alternate the electrosurgical energy between the first set of electrodes and the second set of electrodes at a predetermined time interval, and advance the cutting member.

Claims (38)

1. A surgical instrument comprising:

an end effector for grasping tissue, wherein the end effector comprises:

a first jaw;

a second jaw, wherein the first jaw includes a proximate portion and a distal portion and the second jaw is movable relative to the first jaw;

a first set of electrodes; and

a second set of electrodes, wherein the first set of electrodes is located in a proximate portion of the first jaw and the second set of electrodes is located in a distal portion of the first jaw;

a cutting member configured to reciprocate within a slot; and

a control circuit configured to:

receive information about impedance of the grasped tissue;

provide electrosurgical energy to the first set of electrodes and the second set of electrodes and repeatedly alternate the electrosurgical energy between the first set of electrodes and the second set of electrodes at a predetermined time interval; and

advance the cutting member.

2. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the control circuit is configured to advance the cutting member to the proximate portion to cut the grasped tissue in the proximate portion after or when welding of the grasped tissue is substantially completed.

3. The surgical instrument of claim 2 , wherein the control circuit is configured to stop providing the electrosurgical energy to the first set of electrodes and the second set of electrodes before advancing the cutting member to the proximate portion.

4. The surgical instrument of claim 2 , wherein the control circuit is configured to advance the cutting member to the distal portion to cut the grasped tissue in the distal portion after cutting the grasped tissue in the proximate portion.

5. The surgical instrument of claim 2 , wherein the control circuit is configured to determine whether the welding of the grasped tissue is substantially completed by comparing the information about the impedance of the grasped tissue with a predetermined termination impedance value.

6. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the control circuit is configured to advance the cutting member to the proximate portion to cut the grasped tissue in the proximate portion before welding of the grasped tissue in the proximate portion is completed while providing the electrosurgical energy to the first set of electrodes and the second set of electrodes.

7. The surgical instrument of claim 6 , wherein the control circuit is configured to advance the cutting member to the proximate portion to cut the grasped tissue in the proximate portion when the welding of the grasped tissue starts to complete.

8. The surgical instrument of claim 7 , wherein the control circuit is configured to determine that the welding of the grasped tissue starts to complete when a rate of impedance decrease becomes approximately zero.

9. The surgical instrument of claim 6 , wherein the control circuit is configured to advance the cutting member to the distal portion to cut the grasped tissue in the distal portion after cutting the grasped tissue in the proximate portion while providing the electrosurgical energy to the second set of electrodes.

10. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the predetermined time interval is in a range of about 0.1 to 0.5 seconds.

11. The surgical instrument of claim 1 , wherein the electrosurgical energy comprises radio frequency energy.

12. A surgical instrument comprising:

an end effector for grasping tissue, wherein the end effector comprises:

a first jaw comprising a proximate portion and a distal portion;

a second jaw that is movable relative to the first jaw;

a first set of electrodes located in the proximate portion of the first jaw; and

a second set of electrodes located in the distal portion of the first jaw;

a cutting member, wherein the first jaw and the second jaw define an elongate slot therebetween extending from a proximate end of the first jaw and wherein the cutting member is slideably receivable within the elongate slot to cut the grasped tissue; and

a control circuit configured to provide electrosurgical energy to the first set of electrodes and the second set of electrodes, wherein the electrosurgical energy repeatedly alternates between the first set of electrodes and the second set of electrodes at a predetermined time interval,

wherein the control circuit is configured to receive information about impedance of the grasped tissue.

13. The surgical instrument of claim 12 , wherein the control circuit is configured to advance the cutting member to the proximate portion to cut the grasped tissue in the proximate portion after or when welding of the grasped tissue is substantially completed.

14. The surgical instrument of claim 13 , wherein the control circuit is configured to stop providing the electrosurgical energy to the first set of electrodes and the second set of electrodes and thereafter advance the cutting member to the proximate portion.

15. The surgical instrument of claim 13 , wherein the control circuit is configured to advance the cutting member to the distal portion to cut the grasped tissue in the distal portion after cutting the grasped tissue in the proximate portion.

16. The surgical instrument of claim 13 , wherein the control circuit is configured to determine whether the welding of the grasped tissue is substantially completed and to compare the information about the impedance of the grasped tissue with a predetermined termination impedance value.

17. The surgical instrument of claim 12 , wherein the control circuit is configured to advance the cutting member to the proximate portion to cut the grasped tissue in the proximate portion before welding of the grasped tissue in the proximate portion is completed and provide the electrosurgical energy to the first set of electrodes and the second set of electrodes.

18. The surgical instrument of claim 17 , wherein the control circuit is configured to advance the cutting member to the proximate portion to cut the grasped tissue in the proximate portion when the welding of the grasped tissue starts to complete.

19. The surgical instrument of claim 18 , wherein the control circuit is configured to determine that the welding of the grasped tissue starts to complete when a rate of impedance decrease becomes approximately zero.
